Once you have a value displaying as the result of a calculation, to store that value, you go SHIFT then STO then any one of the letters (A, B, C etc.). Then to recall the value, ALPHA then the letter you want. I'm not exactly sure that is right because I don't have my calculator with me. You can use the stored value in expressions (like how you can use ANS in an expression for the next calculation). So it can be helpful if you are doing a long calculation to store the result of a calculation halfway through.

Cooool thanks! Far out does that mean you can save like, 9 numbers? Mean.

Idk if its just me... But I had a look at some Cells191 stuff, and it was pretty much just genetics?

Hey guys I just got a call from studylink telling me that my student loan was not approved because apparently I'm not studying a recognised course? When I told them that I'll be studying HSFY at Otago the lady said some courses are not approved by the ministry. Are any of you guys having the same problem? Oh and guys in med, did you guys get student loans for HSFY? Thanks guys...

CELS is quite similar to NCEA L3 biology in a lot of topics, but the focus is somewhat different, and it goes into a bit more detail. But yeah, CELS (in 2011, anyway, previous years of CELS have had people in tears after terms tests...) isn't too scary if you've done some basic biology before, and there is a reasonable amount of genetics-y stuff, but there's a lot more on microbial stuff than you'd have been taught at high school.

Erm, yes, I got a student loan during HSFY.... HSFY is the first year of a BSc, so it is most certainly eligible for a student loan, so I think studylink might have made a mistake here, I'd give them a call and tell them you're doing a BSc, and if they still can't work it out, ring Otago and make sure you're actually enrolled properly.

Thanks frootloop, I just called up the uni and the lady said that our student loans cannot be approved until we've attended course approval so pretty much everyone is in the same situation haha

That's bollocks. Call them up again because it is an approved course! Anyway, I don't even know how they can reject your app based on the course your studying when they should be waiting for OU to confirm your course anyway?? And this happens after course approval. Studylink are usually pretty reasonable to deal with, I'm sure something was simply lost in the static.

EDIT: bet me to it ;]

Edit/
Sorry, this isn't exactly HSFY related but I've always wanted to know, where can I buy those yellow and blue striped scarves in Dunedin?? :D

You can get those at the Campus shop (if I remember correctly). I've seen the Otago caps there too.

Warehouse stationery in Dunedin might have it. If all else fails, I'm pretty certain the Campus shop in the Link sells it.

As Cathay808 said, different exams have different restrictions. But in general for sem 1, you can get away without using a calculator for CELS and HUBS which don't really make you do tricky math.

Then walk down Castle street wearing it. You'll be totally fine. :p[/offtopic]

[offtopic]I wonder if that old man who got injured one night while looking at his old house was wearing anything that would have provoked an attack... Somehow I doubt it, y u so angry castle street. >.< [/offtopic]

[offtopic]Because it's full of dickheads. I was going to euphemise that but forgot, bugger[/offtopic]

edit: I've calculated that given my 2011 UMAT scores (64, 60, 53), to safely get into med last year I would have needed a paper average of 90.5%

Bother.

If last year taught us anything it's that there is no safety in numbers. I mean someone with a 78.6 rank is still on the waiting list-- madness. That said your raw score is solid, definitely be pleased with it and all the better if you can improve it this year (if you choose to re-sit that is, which I would only cause you never know what could happen). Regrading gpa I think anyone can get the above, and exceed it even, with a little hard work and diligence, the neglected virtue. Sounds contrived, I know, but really you'd be surprised how far the obvious can get you.

So basically, anyone doing hsfy '12 should forget about ranks and all that jazz. Anything can happen so don't work towards safe averages. Go above and beyond-- just in case.

Awesome! Thanks epikness.
And brin, :p Normally I'd up for something like that hahahaha  but since I'm going to be a fresher who's a HSFY I don't want to be attacked since I basically have to walk through Castle St to get to Uni D:

Good call. Avoid any activity that involves walking down Castle street barefoot. Might have consequences. The denizens of Castle street seem to be immune to the effects of walking on broken glass though.

brin Just like what papermoth said, don't aim to be safe. I'm not saying that you are, I'm advising you to just do as well as you possibly can. A lot of people get suckered into thinking that cut-offs are static and getting A+s are a reflection of lady luck's will. You make your own luck in HSFY.

Strangely, the more diligent you get, the more intelligent you get. The harder/smarter you work, the luckier you seem to get.

Your UMAT scores are solid. You can definitely re-take the UMAT with much less pressure weighing on you if you'd like to. Any improvement is a bonus.

xyzzy So I gather you're flying Jetstar on a non-refundable fare? Try Sella, where Air NZ holds auctions (and where I've seen people trying to sell their tickets).

If you're flying Air NZ, don't even bother, they won't allow name changes and very few people would be willing to buy a ticket that can't go under their own name.

Jetstar does have a service for $40 where you can change your flight
They're wanting to sell their flight to Dunedin because they've been offered a place (in OLY1 I presume?) at Auckland, in other words they won't need to travel to Dunedin at all. And yes, Jetstar allows name changes - if they didn't I would've straight out said "don't bother" ;)
