I was wondering how important the textbook readings were for the lectures? They expect you to read pages and pages, and I feel like they are just time consuming and I understand things better when lecturers are explaining things to me.

They say they're worth more than they really are. You will notice that some, like CELS, give you whole chapters. In reality, its not necessary to do them at all. Though I have heard that occasionally they can slip out the odd MCQ based on readings. In reality, what is in the lectures is what is in the readings, and you should concentrate on the lecture slides and notes. Learn them well.
Some find it good to read the textbook after the lecture, but keep in mind that the textbook readings have a lot of useless information that just wastes valuable Health Sci time. If you understand the lecture you should be fine.
Personally, I didn't even use some of my textbooks...

To back up what netpat just said, everyone in our class seemed to do readings... For about a week :p Then it dawned on us that they're pretty useless unless you genuinely don't understand something. That said, I personally found the HUBS textbook really useful (and HUBS is by far the most likely to write an MCQ based on textbook material. Not that one MCQ mark means anything in the scale of things).

Thanks for the info RE:textbooks, was getting worried because Studylink is being useless so I haven't gotten the course related costs yet. I have the physics book bought, are there any others which are worth while (seems like HUBs might be?).

So we're not allowed graphics calculators?

I think we are, I remember seeing a list of approved calculators somewhere on blackboard - can't remember which course it was for though (there were only 3~ on the list).

I'd say HUBS is definitely worth buying (others may disagree), and HEAL is worthwhile as well. The CHEM book is hopeless (in my opinion), the CELS book isn't that useful (and the one or two times you might want to look at it, it's in the science library anyway), and I didn't even buy (or look at) the BIOC textbook (BIOC give really good lecture handouts which essentially make up their own 'textbook').

No, you're not.

With Studylink, remember that you have to actually 'order' your CRCs online, and they credit it to you pretty fast

I feel dumb, are some hubs labs not starting till next week?

also are organelles described in the different levels of organization simply the protein filaments??

Just out of interest, did they tell you in the prelim lecture what the HSFY class size is this year?
We were told at 12pm lec that it was 1228 :D

so its another 'fight-for-a-seat-in-the-theatre' like today for cells. (Quad 2 is a dark, dark, place that no-one wants to be in x.x)
quad 2 huh? I think we may be in the same cels stream...

yes some people will have their hubs lab next week it's a 2 week rotation for labs ... Dw NO question is dumb! The protein filaments are if I recall correctly one of the things that organelles are made up of, they're also made up of 2 other things... Which I've forgotten :S I'm sure it's in the lec booklet though :)

Also, with regards to the textbook, how in depth do they want us to know the content?
As I said before, the most important thing is your lecture slides. Know everything on your lecture slides really well and you will be perfectly fine. Use the textbook for stuff you don't understand.
Peerwise is also a very good resource for practise and reinforcement of your study.

anyone else having trouble opening the hubs notes for lecture 1 put up on blackboard?

ps dream i couldn't find anything in the lec manual, will look it up tomorrow i guess

yeah we were pretty much given nothing in lecture 1 though...guess this will get better tho

Yeah, fair enough, but for future lectures (and for the HUBS lecture, which is examinable i.e. you WILL get a question on it because they think that's where they can trip you up) you only really need to know what is on the slides.

Sorry sunny I just went to look it up on the notes I made during the lecture - I just realised that I was talking about the extra cellular matrix :s however I did remember what the lecturer said about the organelles - theyre aren't necessarily protein filaments they can be anything that helps a cell do the job that its supposed to do ... There was something more elaborate but I can't remember it... Once I see the lecture notes when they go up, if they do anything to jog my memory I'll post something on here in response :) sorry I couldn't be of much help :/

jonathan810 I was assigned to quad 2 - rofl I actually liked it! I find it less daunting than st davids... Although I must admit st David's looks much better! What abt you which stream?

I was originally assigned to St David but looking at the cramped it was for cels compared to quad, i think i may as well endure 50 minutes of quad 2 from now on. In quad 2 i get a whole row to myself and i can stretch without hitting the 2 people beside me and blocking the view for the person behind me :P
