any first-years here know what the HUB's intro will be about?
Just what anatomy and physiology means, 4 major principal tissues, levels of organisation, systems and the human tissue act I think. Can someone tell me where I could find the solutions to the problems in our physics book?

He said 1,228 students in PHSI191, but 130 of those are not HSFY students. So really we have 1098 students in our cohort... which is pretty good odds.

Yes, I've wanted to know that, too.The questions in our textbook seem a little harder than level 3 physics.....

Heh, we were told there were 1396 PHSI191 students, of which 1265 are health scis... Yay for marginally better odds...

Short answer: Blackboard.

Long answer: because it is now published, the answers aren't just given out to anyone, and the physics department managed to secure rights to release answers to odd-numbered questions in 2011, don't know the situation this year.

anyone want to swap streams?

Hey,
I went to the physics department today to ask if I could swap streams so that I don't have a 7 hour block in my timetable and they said that the only way I could do this is to swap streams with someone since I don't actually have a serious excuse. So, does anyone want to swap?
I have physics at 12am and chem at 1pm. Does anyone want to swap either of these for a morning lecture (chem at 8am or physics at 9am)?
Let me know if you want to swap.
By the way, St. Margarets' doesn't have free printing. I'm staying there and we get $15 for free but after that you have to top up with your own money.

Weird, that's like 200 less people than HSFY had last year (I wonder why? Did Auckland increase it's place numbers for first year students or something? Or are there just more sane people in your year level than ours :p ). But hey, better odds for you lot, I suppose.

The questions in that book are harder than just about anything you'll get in an actual exam.
ETA: Scroll down to the 'physics' part of this thread and follow the link to the department website which has all the old final exam questions. You'll probably already be able to do ~70% of them :p

How can I access the podcasts? D:
I went on Blackboard -> HUBS191 -> Lectures -> Lecture Podcasts 2012 -> Logged in but no podcasts :(
The podcast user guide pdf doesn't help :(

Well assuming you've logged into the Otago Podcast site, you're at the right place.

They DON'T do instant podcast uploads.

If they haven't processed and uploaded the first lecture's podcast yet, how many podcasts will there be?

At the 5pm PHSI191 lecture he said he had updated numbers and something about having being misquoted. I wrote down what he said, which was 1380 PHSI191 students and 1238 HSFY students. So less than last year, but not a lot less.

Heh, so compared to 1396 PHSI191 students and 1265 HSFY students... that's a REALLY marginal change

Does it really make a difference if I have the draft version of the PHSI textbook rather than the published version? I asked the lecturer and he said yes, there are typos and questions that I'm missing out on -- but you guys don't even have half the answers to those questions so hmm...

He means the actual content of the book can be wrong, and there are newer questions. They're something to practice physics on even if you don't have a standard answer to compare it to.

I hope everyone enjoyed their first lectures, I thought mine were cool but by 6pm after HUBS I was very hungry...
I was wondering if someone can tell me which calculator we'll need for the exams? Then I can buy the right one now, thanks!

Heh still a change though. Hooray for extremely marginally better odds!!! (if that makes sense).
Wierd, because I don't remember being told the numbers at all... Maybe I missed it because I was too excited...
Lol, excited about Health Sci...

Hope you guys enjoyed today's lectures. They'll probably be the best lectures of health sci (well, that's contentwise, ignoring lecturers like Matt Bevin and Peter Dearden). Also remember that the HUBS lecture IS examinable, including the stuff on the Human Tissue Act. You don't want to lose easy marks just because you didn't think it was examinable...

Did they test us on that? I never paid any attention to it haha
It IS examinable, they tested us on the tissues, and I don't remember whether they tested the Human Tissues Act but it IS examinable no matter what they actually tested in 2011 (which will always be a subset of the examinable material)

I agree with Cathay's post, but I do remember seeing some people using the previous version of the book in Health Sci. Just remember, the lecturers will keep telling you that it is a TEXT book, not a COURSE book. So, in other words, trust your lecture slides and notes with your life, and just refer to the book when you don't understand something. That way, you know just what you need to know, and know it well, as well as you can easily find errors in the book, if there are any. Others may disagree though. Cathay and the others watching this thread, what do you think?

I remember an MCQ on it, if not in our tests then definitely in past year exams, so they are definitely capable of it.
[OFFTOPIC] Stink! I only just realised that noone had posted after my last one, and that I could have added this onto the previous post as an edit! But I don't know how to delete posts! Sorry Mods :) [/OFFTOPIC]

Congratulation on finishing your first day!

After an anxious wait to start your first day, I hope you had fun. You'll meet amazing people through out the year. Otago has a strong academic staff team, also some brilliant people (Brooke Whitehead) in administration that will oversee your course. You'll love it there.

Study hard but enjoy yourselves.

Best wishes,
Malhar
