On that note, if you were planning to visit the residential colleges, perhaps @informedconsent can tell you a bit more about whether you need to contact the colleges in advance to see if they can arrange a tour? I remember when I visited one of the colleges with a friend, we were asked if we had called them ahead to arrange a tour (which we didn't, but luckily one of their RAs happened to be walking past and gave us a tour anyway.)

When I went through the halls last year I emailed around first, visited a few that we hadn't emailed but had friends staying there. I'd say contact them first. Actually saw someone getting a tour through Cumberland just a few weeks ago!

There are multiple sessions, and yes there have been afternoon sessions, so unfortunately it is likely that there will be at least one afternoon session.

Is it possible to book flights later in June when you get told when you're actually sitting it?
IIRC they don't tell you until two weeks (or less) beforehand, so too late to book flights etc. Last year I was told by ACER that I could choose a slot now if I sent them a copy of the flight itinerary as proof that I needed that time, however after sending them said paperwork they changed their minds and wouldn't have any discussion with me about the matter.

ACER are dickheads.

Lol i agree with you Cathay, it also is a bit of a double win for me because if i do well I know I can easily do it again next time, or if i dont do so well I know what areas need improvement.

I have got my accomodation sorted out thank heavens its not 120 a night o.o and I have emailed the Uni and 3 hostels to examine their facilities! So excited!

Also definately after volunteering at a hospice and talking to alot of doctors, i really can say this is what I want to do!

On the other hand, other than a gauge, I do believe that people tend to do better in UMAT the second time they sit it - they have some experience with it so there is less anxiety and stress, allowing them to focus on answering the question better. So I do believe that sitting UMAT before HSFY would be a valuable experience.

This, and UMAT is only two hundred bucks so it's not the end of the world if you want to try it first the year before; hmm ... I might just do that this year

Thats if you live in Dunedin. If your like me and live a long way away, you end up paying something like 500+ for the whole exercise. But whats $500 if it helps me see my strengths and weaknesses in the umat a year before everyone else! Atleast I also will feel more confident next year because I am doing it this year :)

If I was you I would so do it regardless of price! Unless it went up to 1k

You can sit it in Auckland as well

I'm in Palmy too mate, flick me a PM if you want to meet up

I already saw Auckland uni so I didnt really want to go again. I just mainly wanted to cram umat plus openday together especially since more than half the amout of students would be gone and I can ask as many questions as possible!

You going to take the test at otago? Sure we should meet up aye, what school do you go to?

Hi- the library past exams, do they have answers to the past papers?
Thanks

Nope, not from the library site. For CHEM and PHSI you can get the answers on Blackboard, don't remember if CELS does the same, but HUBS definitely doesn't.

[OFFTOPIC]LOL! that's just GOLD :D [/OFFTOPIC]

Hey juna, i actually donwloaded them off the library website, chem and phsi have answers there for every year (as in from 2007 onwards) except 2011, but CELS and HUBS don't have them :)

Hope that helps :)

Wait, did you mean you can get the answers from the library exam website itself, rather than blackboard, despite a very direct statement on the Library Exam Papers page saying "Answers are not availabe"?

Could someone explain this to me? This is from the thermodynamics reading test:

Why is

'Combining surface heat transfer coefficients due to convective and radiative heat transfer increases the total heat transfer coefficient.'
true, and
'Combining conductive heat transfer coefficients due to conductive heat transfer through multiple layers increases the total heat transfer coefficient.'
false?

Convective and radiative heat transfer happen in parallel. That means essentially there are two routes of heat loss that can happen at the same time, independent of each other, so the heat transfer coefficient is higher and the rate of heat loss is higher. The equation is htotal = h1 + h2. You simply add the heat transfer coefficients together. Htotal is bigger than h1 and h2.

Conductive heat transfer through multiple layers is conduction in series. That means conduction has to happen one after another. This is a very different arrangement from the parallel heat loss for the above example. When you have that sort of arrangement, the 1/htotal = 1/h1 + 1/h2 + ... equation comes into play, which reduces the heat transfer coefficient. Htotal is less than h1 and h2.

The non-scientific way I like to think about these two situation is that, for conduction and radiative heat transfer, they are like two separate streams of heat flow, so you can get more heat through in the same amount of time. The conduction in series is like pipes in series where you have to get through more pipes to get to the end, so it doesn't flow as fast.

It's kinda the same with resistors. Resistance in parallel is less because you have more pathways to get through. Resistance in parallel is more because you have to go through multiple resistors to get to your target.

Note that the equation for resistance in series is the equation for the heat transfer coefficient in parallel, and vice versa with the equation for resistance in parallel is the heat transfer coefficient in series. The reason they are opposites is because resistance (measures the amount of stuff against flow) is the inverse of the heat transfer coefficient (this coefficient is like the "goodness" of the heat transfer...the bigger the number the greater the rate of heat transfer).

Hope that makes sense.

Where is the venue for the umat?

Edgar centre?

Hi,
I was wondering when we would find out the dates for our first semester final exams? Also, do we have to be back in Dunedin by the 5th of July for course approval for second semester because I just realized I've booked my return flight for the 8th of July?!

Thanks Skyglow! I wish Acer would put more info as to the venue and time for exams /sigh.

They should be up mid-April so that'll be soon after the break ends.

You only have to be back for second semester course approval if you're changing the papers you're taking.

I think you only have to go if you're adding an 8th paper?
