Heh funny, on blackboard they posted a message telling people to shutup and stop leaving lectures early. It is pretty damn annoying when you get a bunch of idiots behind you laughing and browsing facebook through the entire lecture.
Agh! That annoys me too. Especially when they're right in front of you -- I watched someone browse 9gag for THE ENTIRE LECTURE. It was so freaking distracting!

there's just something about having been in the lecture that makes picking up information from the slides so much easier later.
Yeah, even flicking between listening and not listening seems to be better than not listening at all... Although paying attention is still best for all...

I wonder if I should post on the Moodle forum suggesting that "DO NOT DISTURB" signs be put up during our case presentations so health scis don't barge in and breach confidentiality...

Oh this for sure. I'm surprised that they don't lock the doors or something. (Does anyone know what they do for tests? Is it a safety thing perhaps?) It's really quite a fail when they say "don't come late cos we'll lock the doors bla bla bla" and then any random can fly in at any time.

Well, tests tend to happen during non-lecturing times... But I remember the time last year when I opened the door to St D, and saw that they were finishing a test - was very glad I resisted the temptation to touch the door a couple of minutes earlier.

Perhaps they're not allowed to lock the doors in case there's a fire alarm, because locked doors really don't go well with evacuation... But still, you'd think a sign or two wouldn't go amiss...

Speaking of fire alarms, I believe there was a fire drill in Central Library today?

[OFFTOPIC]Anybody take extra long study breaks? i took one today (intending for it to be 10 minutes long), and ended up spending close to an hour reading 'The Hunger Games' ==. All subconciously. I blame you, jonathan810 and lulwut . You could have just told me what the hunger games was about on monday ==. lol. [/OFFTOPIC]

Yeah, there was, it was pretty exciting :P we were right on the top floor, and everyone sat around for like, two minutes going 'what is that??' It kinda just sounded like a really loud car alarm. Everyone I saw was packing up reaaally slowly, it was pretty fail haha. There were even people taking the elevators.

Quick question! Does anyone know the testing times for Dunedin for the UMAT? I need to book my return flights but when researching a saw a thread that stated that there is also an afternoon testing time, but then the poster was in Austrailia so yeah. :/ please tell me its only at 8:15am

There are multiple sessions, and yes there have been afternoon sessions, so unfortunately it is likely that there will be at least one afternoon session.

Is it possible to book flights later in June when you get told when you're actually sitting it?

:/ its hideously expensive and I might get sold out if i dont book now so yeah. Latest flight I can get anyway is 4pm so it might be cutting it close. What time is the reporting and endtime of the afternoon one if you know?

I don't know the exact reporting time for the afternoon one, but it can't be before 1pm (because the morning one doesn't finish until around 1pm and the afternoon one is in the same venue), which means the test is unlikely to start before 2pm meaning it's unlikely to finish before 5pm. But as you'll see below, it really is irrelevant since the latest flight you can get is 4pm.

Given that it's Dunedin, if the latest flight you can get departs at 4pm, it means you'd have to have checked in before 3.30pm, which means you'd have to leave for the airport (30 minutes out of the city) before 3pm, and shuttle pick-up times vary - once I got picked up just after 2pm when my flight was at 4. This essentially means that the 4pm flight is the realistic option if you have the test in the morning.

THANKS CATHAY! Lifesaver! Best option is probably to stay in another night in Dunedin!

If you email ACER and explain that you'll be flying in from out of town you can request to be placed in whichever session is most convenient for you. They're normally pretty good about doing this - when I flew down in year 13 I asked in advance to be placed in the afternoon session, which allowed me to book flights well in advance.

Thanks GG. But I have already booked the flights, I arrive on the 24th and leave the 26th. Either way I will have time to explore the hostels/uni because I can't be bothered paying twice for open day and umat trip :)

I was worried about transport when I did UMAT (I was busing, so not as important, but same idea) so I ended up having a wee holiday in Dunedin. I know hotels add another expense (only $120 though for two nights) but it made booking stuff so much easier. It also gave me a little bit of time to explore the city which was MUCH more productive than three days at high school. As with Hari I couldn't be bothering doing UMAT and open day so I lumped it all together.

On that note, if you were planning to visit the residential colleges, perhaps informedconsent can tell you a bit more about whether you need to contact the colleges in advance to see if they can arrange a tour? I remember when I visited one of the colleges with a friend, we were asked if we had called them ahead to arrange a tour (which we didn't, but luckily one of their RAs happened to be walking past and gave us a tour anyway.)

Something I read from the UMAT website. "From 2012 UMAT scores can be used for admission to any of the UMAT Consortium universities ONLY in the year following the test. For example, results from UMAT2012 can be used for undergraduate medicine or health science courses beginning in 2013 but NOT 2014. Do not register for UMAT2012 unless you are planning to apply for a course commencing in 2013 AND you meet the eligibility criteria specified in the UMAT2012 Information Booklet."

Does this mean the results would not be used for my application into the programs after health science?

If it is then at least I get a gauge of how hard/easy UMAT would be for me.

Correct, it means now you must sit UMAT during HSFY.

On the other hand, other than a gauge, I do believe that people tend to do better in UMAT the second time they sit it - they have some experience with it so there is less anxiety and stress, allowing them to focus on answering the question better. So I do believe that sitting UMAT before HSFY would be a valuable experience.

I actually was too lazy to tour the places... I already knew which college I wanted to go to by word of mouth. I just walked around and saw a few of them from outside though. However I think it would be best to just ask them if you could meet up with someone on the day to take a tour with. It's less awkward walking in that way as well :D.
