Pre-UMAT 2018 Discussion Thread

Hey guys,

In preparing for Section 2 I was wondering how much emphasis you should focus on learning new/more complex vocabulary (and whether you're going too far)?

And does reading loads of novels really help for this?

Heyo, just my two cents on this. Based on my experience last year sitting the UMAT, the test itself is moving away from an emphasis on a large vocab bank in order to answer options which have similar meanings to an emphasis on requiring you to have a holistic understanding of the text, its context and the characters' intentions. However, given that, I would say that vocab is something you can do a little every day and I would recommend having a decent word bank - it wouldn't hurt hahah :D

Hi everyone,

I want to know how closely MedEntry is to the real UMAT exam. I think there was a thread which discussed this, but now I can't seem to find it.

So, can anybody who has done the UMAT shed some light on how closely MedEntry mocks the real thing?

FYI: I'm currently getting 13+/20 in Section 1 drills, averaging 9+/15 in section 2 drills and 13/15 in Section 3.

Thanks! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm, I am sure others will be in a position to comment as well, but based off my experience sitting the UMAT last year, a lot of the skills learnt during MedEntry were transferable to the real UMAT. In terms of the actual material itself, I found some of the section 1 passages longer than the ones in the actual UMAT and the section three was quite similar in difficulty. Section 2 due to its subjective nature you may have to take this with a grain of salt, but I found the S2 last year to be quite ambiguous and having a lot less emphasis on vocab compared to MedEntry.

Hope that helps!

Hi Trinhcent,

Thanks for your reply!

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you do last year?

After completing the 4 ACER practice tests, I’ve found that I’m averaging 78/134. Does anyone know what this score translates to in the real UMAT test?

It's hard to say given that the practice papers given by ACER tend to be on the easier side in comparison to the actual UMAT. If you have a look at the scoring FAQ's thread: [Undergrad] - UMAT Scoring FAQs we can approximate that every question is around 2 marks in terms of raw score, so your score would translate to around 156/300. This was about 60th percentile based on last year's curve.

Please don't be discouraged tho! That's just a tentative estimate based on that score and with the assumption you answered more harder questions incorrectly. Hope that helped :) and anyone feel free to correct me if I've goofed somewhere.

Thanks for that. I’m aiming for a score of 175+ for a rural interview at Monash or UQ rural entry. If I bomb UMAT, then it’s JCU.

I'm not sure if this has been asked before so apologies in advance if it has but what are the raw scores that would give a 99 percentile umat? As in for s1 what would you need out of 48 and for s2 what would you need out of 44 and for s3 what would you need out of 42? Thank you!

99%ile is usually 201 to 210 overall marks. We guesstimate that to take around 100 correct answers out of 134, approx three quarters of the questions in total irrespective of which sections (but obviously you wouldn't want to score too few in any one section in case falling foul of the 50/50/50 rule).

Btw if the questions were all of equal marks three quarters of 300 total would be 225, but we factor in the higher likelihood of you scoring more "easy" questions than difficult ones and discount it to 200ish marks instead.

Hey all!
Just found this forum today and have been finding some very useful information scattered everywhere.
I hope everyone's preparations are going well :)

Hey, does anyone have much experience with NIE books and the quality of their q's? Using the section 1 book they published this year, there seems to be a huge amount of flawed reasoning in their solutions and every question seems to have some grammatical mistake.

Hello,

Can someone who has done the test please answer my quick question!

In the real test, the mcq bubble paper they give you, does it still have bubbles for A through to to E (5 options) even for Section 1 and 2 questions which only have 4 possible answer options?

Yes, questions 1-134 all have 5 bubbles for A through to E

Acer practice exam 4 contains so many S1 and S2 questions from 2016 and 2017 UMAT that i can clearly remember (probably even some S3 questions). How's everyone's score for Acer practice exam 4? I got 96/134 and finished with 22 mins to spare

Hey!
I plan to do Exam 4 in a week or so, closer to the exam. How do you think it compares to exam 3? I got a mark I was quite disappointed with for 3 and apparently that one is an easy one.

I didn’t do exam 3 this year and don’t intend on doing it (unless I’m bored). I can tell you It’s considerably harder than exams 1 and 2.

I’m pretty sure exam 4 would be harder than 3 as well

Ladies and gents who did Acer practice exam 4 post your marks up plz. I haven’t seen people posting their marks for exam 4 anywhere and I want to know how I did in relation to y’all

What is considered a decent score for Exam 3??
I received 93/134 and Medentry told me it was unlikely I would be offered anything at this rate.
