Timetable confusion for UWS!

I wouldn't worry too much about timetables and what not yet. Everything will be organised in the end for you. You don't need to do any tutorial/prac group whatsoever. Later you will be allocated a PBL group. Each PBL group will need to go to a small teaching session on Monday and Friday which is your tutorials a and b.
From memory the same groups will be used for tutorials C and D which is PPD Personal professional development. This occurs only once a week on the Wednesday. I think youll get more information on that in the first week.
These dont happen all the time. Anyways it doesnt matter, you'll get a timetable released each week to tell you what you are doing and you'll know your groups before your actual teaching sessions start.

Ok, so this much is clear. A few procedural-type questions to the existing UWSers:

1. Are ICMs on a consistent day based on the above? Or will they be on a Tuesday one week and theoretically on a Thursday the next?
2. Assuming they are consistent, how practical would it be to arrange regular work for the day that is not an ICM (ie. if ICMs are Tuesdays, arranging work for each Thursday). If this is one of those things that would be academically dumb, it won't be done. If it's easy to do, I'll likely do it. I guess I'm somewhat asking do PBL groups find the need to meet on the 'day off'?
3. Does the above change from first year to second year? Either in procedure or perspective?

I have one further question: when does one find out which is the ICM day for them? Is this a 1st-week thing (well, I guess that would be the latest possible given they start in 2nd week?)

It'll be with your first set of stuff that UWS sends you, the one telling you what groups you're in.

Thanks [MENTION=5638]Havox[/MENTION]. By the first set of stuff I guess you mean the second set of stuff . We received the first set of stuff last week - it had all of the vaccs / clearance stuff in it, and a form to choose an ICM location. I assume they then allocate and then, as you say, send us another set of stuff with groups based on the allocation.

It's possible your ICM tutor may occasionally swap days to whatever is more convenient for them, but that rarely happens. The only reason my PBL group ever met up for academic related pursuits was to work on our stats project and that only runs for a few weeks and meet up times are flexible anyway. Oh and in second year, instead of just ICM on your hospital day, you have ICM and CPS, so you'll be spending more time at the hospital.

Thanks CB, it's good to learn about these things now. I don't mind how long the hospital day goes, it's just nice for many reasons knowing the other day stays pretty free. It's one thing that put me off the JMP a little - they're 5 days a week (albeit many half-days) from year 1, something that doesn't quite work as well for me. I know things will be full-on from 3rd year, but knowing they are as they are for year 1 & 2 is good.

Just wondering if 27th Feb is '0 week' (join netball team and explore library catalogue system), or if that's it, kick off, ball rolling, time to activate brain?

Also have some queries about Campbelltown vs Blacktown hospital for ICM. Any idea which is easier to get to from a train station (and what time the ICMs start)?
Trundling in from the city, seems like blacktown might be easier, but I did read something about a shuttle bus to campbelltown hospital... although there are shuttle buses and there are shittle buses. Let the preparation begin!

Yoohoo First week is pretty chill, no brain activation necessary. There will be lectures on things like online resources, how to fail med school, how PBL works, an introductory day at the hospital where you'll get your photos taken for ID badges and a lot of med o-week activities.

Blacktown is a 10 minute walk away from the train station and I'm told there's a free bus (I never figured out where it left from). There's a free uni shuttle bus that goes to ctown hospital from the train station and it comes every 15 minutes. If you were to walk, I think it'd take around 25 minutes. The shuttle bus is far from a shittle bus, the drivers are always up for a chat and will wait for you if they see you running. I'm not sure about which would be easier from the city though, sorry!

I think Cal meant to say 8 - 10 am. There was a pretty even spread from 8 to 3pm at Blacktown, but ICMs were generally earlier at Campbelltown last year.

Penny says no harm in asking if I can have a non 8am ICM, but don't get my hopes up, because likely to be mostly 8am, bear this in mind,. So...from central, blacktown is a shorter train trip (about 45mins v 59), a shorter walk from the station to the hospital. More importantly (for me) there are more trains from central to blacktown at that time of day. (ie, missing a train is not gonna be such a big deal...assume I'll get the train that'll get me there well before 8am, so that when children refuse to be dumped on neighbours doorstep because before school care isn't open, I have negotiation time :-p). SO, we're both gonna be at blacktown?

Well, I also requested blacktown but unless parking within a 15 min walk is impossible (which can't be the case, one could walk from one side of blacktown to the other in 15mins ) then I will be driving.

Also, I would actually prefer an 8am... Maybe I should email penny and request it given you two are requesting not to have it!
