Parking is a 1000 times better at Campbelltown. I drove to Blacktown for OSCEs towards the end of the year, only really on street parking, so you'll end up walking a bit unless you get lucky.

I agree with callum- blacktown parking was ridiculous... at campbelltown we get to park in staff carpark which is so much easier than trying to find a park in the patient and visitor section....

but then blacktown clinical school is approx 1000 times nicer than ctown so fair trade off not that it really matters to much but they do have a nice common room which i was very envious of (although I spent about 30 seconds in the ctown common room total during the year so not THAT important - however i imagine in 3-5th year you would spend ALOT more time in them)

Not sure if you're aware but most people do 1st and 2nd year in one hospital and then "switch" in 3rd and 4th then in 5th year you switch back (not as black and white as that but thats the basic principle) - so chances of being at black-town or campbelltown for all 5 years are very slim to none so thats something to consider in the distant future.

both hospitals have upsides and downsides from what ive seen and heard so it doesnt make too much difference... if youre at campbelltown for 3rd and 4th you can do 5th year placements at city hospitals like RPA and POW if thats your fancy and things like that... but alas it doesn't seem like we get much choice so enjoy the randomness of that just a heads up Also in second year there is no preference for ICM days or hospital location ( we are starting next week and still have no idea what days/time/location we are (grumbles angrily at clinical administration) which is a pain for trying to plan out life this around med so thats kind of lame when trying to work out work/childcare/whatever... and no "special requests" - friends of mine failed with really good reasons and got rejected and told to swap if they found there time bad so... not as nice as 1st year... grumble grumble... but im sure it will work out

Your final ICM time will really depend on your tutor - even though my ICM was timetabled as 2.30 -4pm ... but we went at 10am one week to visit clinic and stayed till 4 and then the pattern just because 10am-3pmish at least because it was fun and we were learning heaps- your ICM tutor has a fair amount of freedom with the content and style of the tutes ... my ICM tutor was awesome - majority are- definitely the funnest most "doctory" past of first year

Jeremiah, I think placements are the responsibility of the clinical school staff. Once placements have already been handed out, the only way to change them is to swap with another student.

Haha, it's actually pretty easy to get parking at Blacktown once you get the hang of it.

You can request a day/time in second year, you just need exceptional reasons.

Some ICMs also last a lot longer than others, it all depends on your doctor. Some went for 1 and a half hours, others went for close to 6.

The skeleton timetable seems to allude to 4pm, but just thought I'd ask, trying to sketchily plan some work. I realise it may not be exact, and it may vary, I guess I'm looking for an 'average' if possible please.

Half the PBL groups are early, half are late. If you're in an early group, you'll usually finish at midday on Fridays. If you're in the late, it'll be 3pm. You'll find out which PBL group you're in during your first week and you'll meet them on Friday.

PBL discussions are usually the last thing we have on Fridays and they're timetabled in from 3-4pm. They're a quick overview of that week's PBL in a lecture theatre by one of the professors, and the prof will answer some questions about PBL. Hardly anybody goes to these, partly because it's a Friday afternoon and it's not compulsory and partly because IMO they're not very useful. If you do want to go, they usually finish at 3:30, even though they're timetabled for the whole hour.

The school of medicine has it's own orientation beginning on the 27th of Feb, UWS info is referring to the general university campus orientation.

I think [MENTION=7078]UwsInfo[/MENTION] is reminding us that SoM orientation is part of semester. 8.45 Monday 27th (8 or 9 sleeps to go, depending on when you're reading, or how much sleep you're getting). It may be the fun week (let's assume they'll all be fun weeks but it is compulsory.

As distinct from the uni-wide o-week event the week before where various stalls try to sell you bank accounts and contiki tours, and if you're very lucky you will work out where the free bbq/party is. It could be fun, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I know I need to turn up at 8:45 on Monday morning, and I know the activities published on the flyer:

Mon 10-6ish
Wed 3-5pm
Fri 5pm-onwards.

Without me asking for a spoiler, is it possible to find about a bit about the rest of the schedule for the week? Should I expect to be there everyday? I know there are clin school tour(s), and no doubt many intro lectures, library & vUws lectures, meet and greets, etc and the like. Equally, other than the Friday afternoon, if it's 5 days of action, I can be 1000% available and I am looking forward to a week of fun & games.

BUT: It'd be nice to know this now-ish and not just on the Monday, especially if there will be a day off (like Tuesday or Thursday). Days off = potential for work. That said, if this would require unacceptable spoilers, etc, I'll just go with the flow.

Im pretty sure last year we had both Tues and Thurs off in week 1, because those are ICM days, and that didnt start til week 2. No idea if it's the same this year though. As for o-week activities, I think most of the med ones are on the flyer, but there is also uni-wide o-week activities every day.
