Transferring Between Medical Schools

Those sound like extenuating circumstances... No harm in getting the ball rolling.

You might not get credit counted however.

if i get into newcastle med after year 12 because that’s the only place that’ll accept me right now, can i transfer to a med course in sydney like unsw or wsu for second year med?

Hi all Please advise Whether bond medical degree can be transferable? if Yes , to which university ? if the admission is automatic?
Particular student completed 4th Year, one more year to go. due to unfortunate reason this is essential. Please advise in details. Thanks

If you’re asking whether someone can transfer from fourth year Med at Bond to fourth year Med elsewhere it’s a case by case basis type deal that is approved VERY rarely and depends on the circumstances that are prompting the request.

If you’re asking whether a Bond med degree can be used to apply as a non-standard medical student elsewhere (where you’d be re-starting from year 1), JMP used to be the only uni that offered this, but I’m not sure if they still do as I’ve not checked recently.

Starting an Aus med degree makes you ineligible for most other Aus med degrees.

i noticed that it was mentioned since griffith is provisional, then when applying for other med programs like WSU and UNSW you would be considered an applicant who started a uni degree rather than transferring med schools. I'm currently at flinders where you need to have a certain gpa to pass into the MD but I'm not sure if they're also considered provisional or would I have to apply as a transfer?

Both Griffith and Flinders are at heart graduate MD schools. Their pre-MD students are not categorised as med students. As such, whether Griffith or Filnders you would apply to UNSW/WSU as non-standard, not transferring. (Not that lateral transfers are commonly possible anyway).

Only at UNSW, WSU, JMP, Monash, Adelaide, UTas (if UTas has changed to MD) their pre-MDs are med students proper. Likely reason is these schools are considered undergrad medicine, they don't have a major graduate-entry intake like Griffith/Flinders do.

I think UTas is an interesting one, yet very ambiguous. The way they put it on their website makes it seem like its 3 years of BMedSc and 2 MD but I feel like that is most definitely not the case. That being said, there is an option to early exit after 3 years for the BMedSc qualification. Not sure if that "qualifies" a student at UTas to be before their medical degree or not. Thoughts A1? It's definitely not a proper 4 year MD - that's for sure!

By the look of it UTas isn't much different to UNSW, JMP, WSU, Monash .... Dare you call these 1st-3rd year students not med students haha.

MD is a Master degree, it's not logical for school-leaver entrants to start straight into a Master program so the first 2-3 of their 5-6 years are formulated as undergrad BMed-something. I think they all provide the option to exit with the BMed without MD but really, how many of us like to do that :)

The main difference in them being undergrad med (thus 1st-3rd year are categorised as med students) is those "MD schools" don't have a major graduate-entry intake, the graduate MD schools do.

Hello

I've just received an offer to study at Flinders University as a high school leaver for Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine. I am from NSW and would have loved to study here, however my marks were not competitive to receive an offer - hence why I am accepting the Flinders offer. However, I am wondering if I would be able to transfer via a non-standard pathway to UNSW, WSU or JMP. I've been reading the previous posts and I am aware that if you are currently studying Medicine, you can't apply as a non-standard? Only due to extenuating circumstances. Does my course count as 'studying at an Australian Medical School' (as per the UNSW website) because in the first two years I believe I will be studying the Bachelor of Clinical Sciences, then with a 5+ GPA I am able to progress to the Doctor of Medicine. So does this mean I am able to apply via non-standard to UNSW/WSU/JMP? I am willing to resit the UCAT and try my best to maintain a competitive GPA to get an interview.

Apologies if this has already been answered, I am a new user and I'm feeling really anxious about making the move to Adelaide and would just like to know if I can transfer back as a non-standard because a compassionate transfer would not be viable for me. Thanks

You definitely can’t transfer just to clarify the language being used here and the reason for posting in this thread. Transfers refer to situations (usually extenuating circumstances) where a current medical student moves to a different university but maintains their progress through the years, doesn’t sit an interview, and doesn’t submit a formal application.

You definitely seem to be talking about applying as a non-standard and then starting at a second uni from scratch, which is a different thing and should probably go in the non-standard medicine thread.

That said, if your acceptance of a Flinders offer is going to be done solely on the basis that you can use the first 2 years to apply back to NSW then I’d be confirming eligibility directly with JMP/UNSW/WSU and getting something in writing.

Adding to DrLMG's reply ...
I've just looked in Med Deans data, they don't count Flinders 1st/2nd year as Med proper since they only list Med students there as Year1 to Year4, no Year5 no Year6

Whereas WSU, JMP, Monash, UTas, Bond are listed as Year1 to Year5, UNSW Adelaide Year1 to Year6.
