[Undergrad] UNSW Interstate Second-Round Interview Offers

Just received this by email and thought I'd let all the interstaters on MSO know - mods, please move this if it's in the wrong spot, I wasn't sure where to put it.

Dear [NAME],

I am pleased to advise you that you were above the cutoff for the January round of interviews for UNSW Medicine.

However, I notice that you are applying for Medicine at UNSW from interstate. Our experience since implementing an interview as part of our selection process is that the preference for almost all interstate applicants is to enter a medical school in their home state. They apply to UNSW Medicine just in case they are not offered a place in a medical school closer to home. As a result, fewer than 5% of interstate applicants who are selected for an interview eventually enrol in our course.

This is no problem for UNSW Medicine. Indeed, the Faculty has devised a process whereby an interstate applicant can have the opportunity to have UNSW Medicine as a preference, and yet not be required to attend an interview at UNSW unless they do not obtain a place in their home state medical school. This process means that most interstate applicants will be saved the very significant time and expense of travelling interstate for an interview.

We therefore will give you an interview on January 24, 2012 if you do not gain entry into a medical school in your home state.

The process works as follows:

1. The outcome of the first round of offers for places in interstate medical schools should be known by January 19, 2012.

2. For those applicants who were selected for an interview at UNSW in either the main or second round of interviews and have not been offered a place in their home medical school(s) will be offered an interview at UNSW on January 24, 2012.

3. Applicants interviewed on January 24, 2012 will be subject to exactly the same interview and process as those interviewed early.

4. If the results of their interview, together with their academic and UMAT results, exceed the cutoff that was required for entry into UNSW Medicine in the main round of offers, they will be offered a place in the UNSW Medicine course in the late round of offers.

5. It must be stressed that applicants interviewed on January 24, 2012 will not be disadvantaged in any way in this process.

We now require your assistance to finalise our preparation for January 24. As the number of potential interviewees is large, we need an indication as to the likelihood of your attendance, so please take one minute to put an X in the appropriate response below, and return the email.

The following information may assist you in making a decision. We have set the cut-off for places for the Main Round of offers and therefore can calculate what you will require in your interview in order to be offered a place. The outcome is that in order to gain an unbonded place in the UNSW Medicine program you will need to be in at least the top [X]% of interviewees.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Yours sincerely,
Gordon Rees

[ ] I will definitely be coming to the interview – i.e. UNSW Medicine is now my first choice and I will come irrespective of any offer in my home state

[ ] I will definitely come if I don’t get a place in my home state (or other preferred medical school)

[ ] I am undecided but will probably come if I don’t get a place in my home state (or other preferred medical school)

[ ] I am undecided but am unlikely to come if I don’t get a place in my home state (or other preferred medical school)

[ ] I definitely will not be coming to an interview at UNSW Medicine

Wow, just got that email too. Except mine has a different figure quoted for how good an interview I need to get.
Putting down the second option.
EDIT: UMAT 78, ATAR 97.70, given chance 30%

Can you guys please post your UMAT, ATAR and the Percentage? It'll be very useful for others to work out what kind of performance they need to get an offer.

I got 50% is that a good chance or a not so good one? And what were everyone's %?

Also the format of my email is a bit different to yours sasky, is it because i got a first round interview offer?

Dear,

Welcome to the New Year.

I am contacting you again concerning your application to UNSW Medicine and our offer of an interview on January 24. It has been some time since we have made the offer to you, and you have no doubt reflected on whether or not you will attend, or under what circumstances you will or won’t attend.

What was your UMAT raw score and ATAR?

The bigger the number the better indeed. For example, if you needed to be in the top 80% of applicants, you could rank 79/100 and still get an unbounded place.

Question, if i get a bonded place in my home state, am i still allowed to go to the interview to seek for an unbonded place?

Ringing would probably be easiest? Just say "I'm just checking my SEAS was counted to the nice person on the other end" :)

UMAT: 92 (190 overall)
ATAR: 99.25 (VCE)
No SEAS + Interstate + Non-Rural

I was given that I had to be in the top 5%

Sorry guys... I called, I'm under the category of financial disadvantage... I guess that solves our problem...
Also, is there a due date for our reply to this email? And do they offer bonded places for interstate applicants?

UMAT: 60 - 86%ile
ATAR: 99+ (OP 1 - I'll post in the other thread when I receive my exact ATAR)
% Chance: Top 5%
Non-rural, Non-SEAS, Interstate
