UTAS UTAS Medicine: General Discussion

oh ok, you are full of info! thank you so much! :)

Woah 1st of Feb, I was looking at offers in the previous year and it wasn't as competitive, should have applied back then haha!

Also do the bonded offers make much of a difference, I assume that they are just as competitive?

Thank you again I really appreciate all of your information!
Katherine,
Last year UTAS non-standard entry went completely bananas.

UTAS has a scheme where you do BMedRes with guaranteed entry to MBBS. 2017 was the first year that BMedRes graduates went into first year MBBS. We guessed that this dramatically reduced the number of the previously available non-standard spots.

UMAT 95th + ATAR/WAM or 98/7 did not get an offer for 2017.

Best of luck for this year.

No problemo. And yes, previous years were much less competitive for non-standard entry as that's prior to UTAS preferencing their own BMedRes students to such an extreme degree. Next year (edited to clarify: 2018 application for 2019 offer), for mature aged entry, it'll be 100% preference for their own BMedRes students, so this is our last chance, non-standard folks!

Bonded offers are just as competitive, yep.

Is rural non-standard much more competitive than rural standard?

Yes. We don't think (and this has been heavily hinted at but not confirmed by UTAS) that there is any such entry route as rural non-standard. As such, all non-standards are in together. This is not the case for rural school leavers who have whole seperate pathway. Lowest rural school leaver UMAT score last year was 55. Lowest non-standard altogether was 96. I think that says all we need to know right there :)

Also, UMAT 55 got offer in late November. 96 was three days before the course started!!!

When they send conditional offers, do they state if it's unbonded or bonded?

Sorry for asking this cause it's a dumb question. By 55 do you mean 165 or do you mean 55%ile. Also was that for a rural interstate or rural from tasmania? Thanks for the help!
I think it was 55th percentile for Tassie rural. (all of Tassie is rural)

##corrected for interstate below.##

55th %ile and yes, rural interstate. There was a 58th %ile rural interstate who got an offer also. The written application is very important.

While all of Tassie is rural, you still have to have lived here for 5+ years consecutively or 10+ cumulatively to be eligible for the RAP, so while the vast majority of local applicants will also be rural, not all will be.

Just had a look around the forum and I'm not sure if this has been answered before but how many rural places are there for UTAS considering that that all of Tasmania is rural? Do Rural Interstate get just get placed with Tasmanian Locals? (Please please please)

There is a government/UTAS agreement that says X amount of the 120 places on offer have to go to Tas school leavers. Presumably this will be made up of a mixture of rural and non-rural applicants. While interstate and local rural school leavers do the same application, the interstate applicants won't fall under the government/UTAS agreement so effectively they'll be different pools.

UMAT: 59/55/62, raw score: 176, percentile rank: 88
ATAR: Unknown, but most likely 97 or above
Entry: Standard
RAP eligible: Yes
Interstate (Victoria)
Other Unis: Applied pretty much everywhere else

With my UMAT, how strong does my RAP need to be?

Since I won't be eligible for a bonded place (due to New Zealand citizenship), will my UMAT be competitive enough for an unbonded place?

It's really hard to know, but it honestly looks like the written application is a HUGE factor. Particularly given the UMAT score spread of offers last year with the lowest successful offer being for someone with 55th %ile. As long as your UMAT is over 150, and your ATAR over 95.00, it could even be that the written application is everything.

The TAS strategy is you do Med at UTas, then hop over to another state for internship (since the Tas gov can't provide enough positions), later when you're fully qualified return to work for Tas. If you are convincing enough of that in your RAP application you'll get a place offer with 55th %ile.

No one has missed an internship yet (according to my friend who graduates in a couple of weeks). Some do choose to go back to their home state (where they're able/receive an intern offer), which, tbh, is what I'll be trying to do if I get JMP/WSU.

Yep sorry I didn't imply anyone would miss out on an internship. There was a news report expressing concerns about lack of Tas internships and the Tas Premier said they had an agreement with other states to take the "surplus" grads. (Surplus but does not mean Tas won't need them).

So what I meant was you could be one of those going to another state for internship, but if you can show a desire to stay on or return to Tas afterwards it's an extra incentive for UTas to take you in. Note the one with 55ish %ile offer last year was interstate but had lived in Tas earlier.

That was Mal with his 57/58th, I think. The person with the 55%ile and RAP offer (as far as I know) has never been on MSO (unless they're a lurker :D, in which case, HI!). Another current student passed on this info to me in person. They were an interstate student who had not previously lived in Tassie.

That said, I think a couple of people who got RAP offers from interstate last year mentioned they'd previously lived in Tassie, so who knows if it's a factor!

Hi LMG, where did you get this info about there being no entry route for rural non-standards?

Hi LMG, where did you get this info about there being no entry route for rural non-standards?

As I mentioned, it's only information that has been heavily hinted at not formally confirmed. The person who indicated this to me was a very senior BMedRes co-ordinator on open day earlier this year. In addition to this, the entry information we gathered here at MSO last year seemed to support this with no non-standard applicant receiving an offer (rural or otherwise) with a UMAT of less than 96th%ile, while rural school leavers (including interstate rural school leavers) received offers with UMATs in mid-50s, %ile-wise.

Hence, it's a deduction rather than a confirmed fact.

ETA: Of course, if you know something different, please tell :D

Looks like I'm a little late to the party, but I was hoping for some help as to what are my chances for UTAS:
UMAT: 64/62/79, raw score: 206, percentile rank: 99
Predicted Atar: 99.40 - 99.70
Entry: School Leaver
RAP eligible: No
Local: No, NSW
Other Unis: I've also applied to UNWS, JMP, Monash, Adelaide, UQ and Curtin. (Prefer UNSW)

Also just a couple questions, but what's the deal with section 2 I was reading about earlier? And is atar a threshold or is it also factored into admissions?

Thanks a lot! :)
