UTAS UTAS Medicine: General Discussion

If anyone is planning on visiting the Dean at UTAS, could you ask how applicants are ranked? When I emailed them they first said it was on ucat and when I pointed out it said ATAR on the website they said they are 'not sure'!
Did you email medicine admissions specifically or a general enquiries email? Would you be able to copy the email here for us? (Obviously remove identifying details if you choose to do this.) I can't see the Dean meeting with a prospective applicant to discuss admissions criteria, btw!

UTas selection has been quite a mystery, for example from 2019 collated data

197 (98th%ile) 67/58/72, 99.70, BMP, interstate school leaver
191 (96th%ile) 69/52/70, 99.45, CSP, interstate school leaver
189 (95th%ile) 65/54/70, 99.40, CSP, interstate school leaver
189 (95th%ile) 67/54/68, 99.35, CSP, interstate school leaver

Without interview score being an unknown factor how could one substantially higher in both ATAR & UMAT get BMP vs several others with CSP?

I feel like that person might’ve put the Bonded preference higher than CSP. IIRC UTAS had both as seperate courses?

Any idea when the condition offers for Tasmania are out , last year it was on 9 November

Conditional offers. Shooting an arrow at the calendar would probably be the most accurate prediction method.

Actually nah, I’m being cynical ;) It appears that entry criteria have changed this year, with UCAT as a hurdle and ATAR as the deciding factor. If this is true*, they won’t be able to release conditional offers as they’ll need confirmed ATAR in order to rank all the applicants and determine eligibility.

*there’s that cynicism again!

ETA: are you a local applicant?

Few questions on medicine at UTAS.
- Are there interviews? If so what date?
- What date do offers come out if your from Victoria?

Can any people who have applied to utas post what it says on their application status? Mine says 'submitted'. I'm wondering whether it should say 'assessed' or something like that since 1st round offers go out this wednseday.

Some interesting info from the 2018 document outlining UTas' 2016 AMC accreditation:

"The school has increased it targets for rural students to 50% following the introduction of a rural application process in 2015 [...] with a further aim that 30% of this 50% be from RA3-5."

and

"Allowing for attrition* over the 5 year program, 93 domestic graduates are produced..."

*Although not defined, I assume 'attrition' refers to those who choose to withdraw at any stage over the 5 years (quoted as between 3 and 8 people per cohort), as well as those who fail and are told they can't continue (which, encouragingly for me as a current student, must be a very small number).

and

"The School's admission policy and selection processes are well-defined."

AHAHAHHHHAHAAAAAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAA.

Yeah, no.

Interestingly, there is no mention in the selection process section of a quota or agreement for local applicants. I wonder if this is no longer a thing, or if it is simply not a formal thing? My domestic cohort is OVERWHELMINGLY Tasmanian, so it's clearly happening in practice, but why is less clear from this document.

Hi, when does the University of Tasmania release MBBS offers? And what are their entry requirements lol cause their website is super vague? Received an offer for BMedRes today even though I have an ATAR of 99.95 and UCAT score in the 98th percentile...

UCAT is a hurdle only, so the 98th%ile is largely irrelevant, the 99.95 is possibly more interesting. Did you do IB/A levels, etc, or regular year 12?

Also of note, my year has maybe... 4-5 interstate, non-rural school leavers (out of total 120 places) which does mean offers are potentially very, very few and far between to this cohort. (ETA: actually, come to think of it, I can only name 3).

Of the 120...
20 are international
50 (minimum) are rural
10ish are competitive MedRes entry
X (this would vary slightly year to year) are guaranteed MedRes entry
Y are local, non-rural
Z are interstate, non-rural

Ahh, interesting. Did you confirm with UTAS how your IB would be scored and whether your English, in particular, met their requirements? People have been caught out by this in the past, which is what prompted me to ask specifically.

Hmm, thanks for pointing that out - I'll check with them. But I'm an Australian applicant (English is the only language I've ever spoken fluently) so that would be a bit weird for them to assess my English.

Nah, I don’t mean they assess your English, rather that specific English and Chemistry units are pre-requisites for Med at UTAS (as they are at some other unis) and historically there’s been an English option in the IB that has not been recognised by UTAS as meeting that pre-requisite.

Adding to this, UTAS said that my A Level results would convert to 'the highest possible atar' and they have already confirmed that I meet the subject prerequisites, and I still didn't receive an offer.

‘Highest possibly ATAR’ is pretty ambiguous, did they say 99.95 specifically because if not, I wouldn’t assume that, tbh.

Like the scale you showed us for Griffith, if 3 A level A*s have a ‘highest possible ATAR’ of 99.50, then your results could well convert to that.

Also IB45 and lodged a UTAS MBBS application last year - haven't heard anything since so I almost forgot I applied in the first place.

My comment re. the IB English unit you completed, and whether it’s definitely recognised as meeting the pre-req, applies to you, too, then.
