UTAS UTAS Medicine: General Discussion

Also IB45 and lodged a UTAS MBBS application last year - haven't heard anything since so I almost forgot I applied in the first place.
What was your Umat last year? Because last year applicants were ranked on umat while this year it's on ATAR

Just received an email from UTas admissions for anyone that’s curious:

“Thank you for your enquiry and interest in studying with the University of Tasmania.

First round offers have now completed for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

As you were unsuccessful in gaining a first round offer you are now being considered for second round offers which will start in late January and go out any time up until the degree starts.”

I asked if interstate non-rural offers had been released and this was the response so I think it might be that no interstate non-rural people have received an offer that have reported on MSO but they’re definitely out.

So you were only informed that you were unsuccessful upon contacting them?

I got a 99.95 ATAR (NSW HSC) but also have heard nothing back from UTAS. Quite bizarre haha, how exactly does their admissions criteria work?
I think what happened is that they gave out a lot of offers to rural applicants( this includes tasmanian applicants since they all qualify as rural) with boosted atars, and of the very few places left, there are more applicants with 99.95 atars than there are places. So they now have no way to differentiate between all these 99.95s they might stray away from the selection method shown on the website and start ranking applicants on UCAT as well. Or they might select applicants using a raffle draw! Who knows?

the presumption is that anyone that has not yet received an offer is so far unsuccessful - more offers will start rolling out in late jan according to this email. As far as my application, it still just says ‘submitted’. Hoping that it’s a raffle draw like Regular Joe has said :p. 98.40 and UCAT 83%ile will be too low unless some other drastic criteria of admissions is implemented.

just a personal opinion (not trying to trigger anyone here); it feels incredibly unfair that all of Tas is RA2-5 despite having a capital city. On top of a quota, rurality bonuses are also granted and I frankly don’t see how a private school Hobart graduate for example is in any way disadvantaged when compared with metro students, perhaps even in low-socio economic areas in NSW/VIC/QLD that are considered metropolitan and are afforded less opportunity.

I think its because tasmania as a whole state has doctor shortages so if they pick rural/tasmanian kids, they are more likely to stay in tasmania with it being their home state and what not, hence alleviating the shortage? but yes agreed, it kinda sucks

Where do you check your application status? I haven't been onto the UTAS site in ages lmao.
Lmao this. I haven't logged in since the day I lodged my application.

Also, since my UCAT score is exactly 10 less than yours I guess I'm one behind you on the waiting list 😉😉

Just how high is the UCAT cutoff if we haven't been contacted? O.O
UNSW gave out Scientia scholarships two weeks ago to two 99.95 ATAR students with the highest UCAT scores in the country (medicine-specific). Both of us missed out as did someone I know with a 3320 UCAT. Blizzard, a guy on this forum who's since deleted his/her account got one with an unspecified UCAT in the 3300s so that means there's another person in Australia with 99.95 and a 3320+ UCAT. Perhaps those two lucky bastards got a UTas offer hahaha I'm just clutching at straws at this point 😆😆

on the website it think it states you are ranked by atar and not ucat? after you surpass the 50% percentile threshold
The only problem is that there are far more 99.95s who applied to UTas than the number of spots reserved for interstate students (which can't be more than single digits, judging by previous years' data). So we're speculating UCAT may play a role after all in determining who gets the offer, otherwise what else can they use to differentiate candidates with the same ATAR?

Yes but with the very small number of non rural places available, we are speculating that there are more applicants with 99.95 atars than there are places, so they might be forced to turn to ucat to differentiate between them

Ha ha jinks! We replied with almost the same words! I swear I did not copy you;)

Yeah, my friend with 99.95 and 3320 UCAT didn't get Scientia. Did they give out Scientia before UNSW med offers actually came out?

Yeah it appears that they used ATAR and UCAT only, not interview. Scholarships went out on the 3rd of Jan, coinciding with the release of IB results. Which is kinda funny because there's no guarantee those people will a. go to the interview in the first place, b. make it past the interview stage (UNSW has stated that high scores in the first two components won't necessarily make up for a low score in the third) and c. accept the offer even if they get in.

P.S. do we know the same friend 😳 hahaha 🤣
