not to forget the automatic kicking out in the interview(i think it is the grade of 1 from 1-5,5 being the best).correct me if im wrong.

It's a 2 out of 10, meaning that both interviewers have to give you a score of 1 for you to be automatically disqualified from selection

Hmmm not anything wrong, but rather I dont think they gave the best impression they could. I remember one of them got a 6 out of 10. Thats not a bad score but tells me that they probably didn't communicate very well. On the flipside another one of my mates got a 9.5 out of 10 and was also unsuccessful. He had a decent GPA as well..
Dont let me put you off though:lol: just highlighting how competitive it is in auckland.

so even after a getting a good interview score, you can still be unsuccessful?i dont get it.
if someone got 9.5/10 ,doesnt that mean that they really liked the candidate and were impressed by him/her?

There really isn't any formula that decides who's in and who's not. It is evident that the weighing of different aspects of the criteria are not as the first seem, and selection also changes each year with the different cohorts, accounting for different number of applicants, how well the applicants did as a whole, increase in seats (as is currently happening), waitlist student outcomes etc.

What you need to know is that GPA is very important to get an interview, and that the interview plays a major role in determineing who's in and who's out, with GPA being marginally helpful or detremental at that point

The process at auckland is not always fair, and one of the least transparent. There are other things that I feel come into play at auckland that are not made available to general knowledge.
Auckland is cosmopolitan, and I feel that there selection process aims to mimic the racial diversity. That is all I will say.

Also don't forget that factor such as required number of graduate places and MAPAS and ROMPE schemes also play a part.

You'd think so, but it doesn't, at all.

Refer to https://extreme.otago.ac.nz/ojs/index.php/NZMSJ/article/viewFile/444/168 for a really interesting and thorough article about medical student statistics. Regarding your opinion, the article shows that while the European population of NZ is 77%, the 2006 class (and certainly our one) was about 50% European. Asian (+indian) are 10% of the population whereas they represented ~35% of the auckland medical school cohort (and still do, if not more)

So please, dont anyone think that the selection is racist in any way. They're only biased towards the best candidates

EDIT: Just to mention, the interview panel is quite diverse, from scientists, doctors, researchers and other FMHS staff. I dont imagine that they're the same people every year although some do stick around. In essence, you're dealing with people here and they just may in fact be no-so-accepting of everyone, but so far it seems highly unlikely to have been the case

Woah didn't mean to imply that. What I was trying to say was that I felt the selection process aimed to select docotrs that would be inclined to work in the different growing communities in auckland, perhpas the whole of NZ. I mean looking at the fields of interest upon graduation I see most of the grads want to work in general practice and medicine, these are fields that would most probably work in communitiy settings.
It's a nice article. But I still feel that the aim is to try and have appropriate doctors for NZ.
Also I think the large proportion of Asains is due to the fact that many of that ethnicity apply to medicine, im sure you wont disagree?. This means that there will of course be a higher proportion of this population group selected.
But please don't take this the wrong way, im sure auckland takes the best candidates, but I feel that it pays to be aware of the other issues that may or may not have an impact on the selection process.

yes thankyou very much,im not really informative about the sel. proc(i shud be),so it is very interesting to find out things. Also if i wanted to learn more, can you please guide me as to how i shud build my knowledge in health sys of nz.?

realistically what is the required GPA for Auckland Uni OLY1? I mean for for core AND overall?

So far we have had 4 tests, In biosci 107 and Chem I got over 90, in 101 around low 80 and in POPHLTH 23/30. Am I on the right track? It's kinda tough to know this year especially since the thresholds have been raised.

Also, does anyone have any idea whether there is scaling in any of the papers? Or do most of the examiners want much fewer people to get an A+ this year?

You can always go to Ministry of health https://www.health.govt.nz/new-zealand-health-system. There you can look at what they policies and issues they are dealing with atm. However I found that best insights came from those who were currently in the system itself. If you haven't already talk to doctors, perhaps if you are lucky, try shadowing one if they will let you.

Oh also thanks for the support..im not applying to auck this year as I already got in last year in aus..Im just finishing my degree..so you have one less person to compete with(yy)

nice.

slightly off topic but if i wanted to study in aus(as a nz citizen),i wouldnt be able to get a student loan now can i?how do people finance their studies?

As a NZ citizen we are not eligible for HECS (Aus students loan). All financing has to come out of your own pocket im afraid:cry:. However Fees for Med in australia are about the same as NZ, the only real concern is the accomadation. Im not sure if NZ citizens qualify for any living assistance in AUS (im in the process of finding out) but im fairly certain we are not. Still its worthwhile applying, much more chances for med there than in NZ.

pophlth

hey im studying biomed this year and i am struggling to find ways for pophlth revision and/or motivation.
what worked for you guys regarding pophlth?

Repetition repetition repetition. And knowing that it would all be worth it in the end
