I'm not sure how you'd know you got your 107 scaled? My mid terms were shockingly bad but I landed an A so I either did really well in finals or got scaled.

I'm not sure how that matters now though... I don't think you can change your grade :S

It's just that I'm seeing A+ for 107 despite it initially being A (pretty sure)
I checked after some other guy from my hall said he got scaled up

Regardless of sem1, im going for 9.0 this time around ... if i dont get that, i will probably have an epileptic seizure

The first time you get your results they aren't finalised and can be subject to change until a date close to or after the beginning of semester.

Yes I got A+ :)

And it's only MEDSCI 142 that really matters anyway for Auckland.... I'm just trying to keep my grades up in case I go for grad med Otago.

Any plans for applying to aus? I think if you get anything above 7 it's converted directly to 7 there (which is the highest)....or so I've read?

Sounds similar to me... Try my best at Auckland, then try aus (if i can get $$$)/grad entry at Otago

I'll get there one way or another in the end

good luck for umat everyone! I've got a few tips that hopefully will help (I did umat last year, and I remember what it's like):

1) Relax. Relax. Relax. Don't allow yourself to get stressed out before the exam either by other people or by (2) below.
2) You'll be sitting (in silence) in the exam room for probably a good 25min before you start the exam. So don't wind yourself up. Maybe have something (a thought) preplanned that will help your relax and not be agitated.
3) An obvious one: Don't spend more than a few minutes on a question. You will be on a slippery slope if you start saying "I'll work on this question for 20 more seconds"
4) Changing between sections IS hard. My scores got progressively worse through the sections. The transit between section 2 and 3 really was tough - it took me atleast 5min to get my mind into it. Keep this in mind. Allow yourself a minute to clear your thoughts and start section3 with your head in it. In the practise tests my section 3 was very good, in the real exam it was poor - largely because I struggled at the transition between section 2 and 3. I really can't emphasize this enough. Take a decent moment to clear your thoughts.
5) In your practise exams all similar section 3 questions are lumped together (e.g. all "pick the middle" questions are in a clump), in the real exam they are not - they are randomly scattered around in small groups (if I remember correctly). I would recommend you do all the questions of your strength first (e.g. the next in the sequence), and then do all the difficult ones at the end. NOTE: Don't allow yourself to fall behind though!! Still allocate the correct time per question.

Good luck! For your those of you at Auckland remember that the umat isn't worth much - it's not the end of the world if you do badly (which is quite reassuring). Quite a few people with umat's as low as the 30th percentile still get offers at Auckland.

EDIT: MOST people don't finish all the questions in each section in the allocated time. So don't expect to. This is a really tough exam, you can't expect to do all the questions.
MYself I randomly guessed approx the last 8 (out of 44) of the questions in section 1, but my section1 score was still in the 86th percentile.

You know how you have to maintain a B+ average (6.0 GPA) for all 8 papers, does that mean that technically you can get (for example) a C in a non-core paper as long as your GPA for all 8 papers is above 6? Would you still be good for an interview?

Yes.

How is everyone studying for BIOSCI106? Do we have to memorise the enzyme kinetic equations?

No we do not have to memorise any equations for 106, but the concepts underlying the equations are important. He has told us on at least 2 different occasions, stressing we do not have to memorise them.

Yes but we must learn the trends of the Lineweaver Burk and Eadie Hofstee Plots for the 3 types of inhibition which he specifically mentioned in today's lecture.

Yeah or just be like me and don't bother learning anything pedantic seeing as it's not a core paper. I actually have no idea what those words even mean haha! ;)

Well that doesn't necessarily mean I'm neglecting MEDSCI 142 at this moment. It just means I want to give it all my best for this year. Don't want anything below A- for Non core papers well preferably. And trust me if you treat something as lightly as that especially BIOSCI 106 my friend I'm afraid you might not even get the bare minimum grade you were trying for. Second half of BIOSCI 106 gets more mental than the first.

If that was directed at 4everAlone, then lol. Look at what he's studying.... Clearly he didn't fail ;)

think of it this way, your gpa is basically going to stick around with you for quite a while (in your near future anyways)

aus postgrad, non-standard, otago all look at first year so i dont really consider anything a "non-core" as such

but having said that, medsci142 does get a little more attention yeah?

Jeez, 4everAlone, how can you take such a lackadaisical approach to your studies? You clearly aren't cut out for this. ;)

That's fair enough. If it's not impacting your ability to ace 142 then by all means good on you.

That's true too. Meh. All you guys working so hard, it's great to see ;) haha

I'm sorry I'm sorry. From here on in I promise to stay awake during at least half the lectures each day :D
