You will get an introduction to maori health in poplhlth111 and see all sorts of statistics regarding their health. But yea, Mcnerdy has given you a good list on what you can read up about.

Pop health will also give you introduction into how big Rod Jackson's ego is and how boring epidemiologists are lol. It's not a bad paper, but I'd seriously do some reading by yourself. Form an opinion based on the complications of the current issues. Discussion of personal responsibility for health care is important, especially since we just voted in a more right wing govt (although centrist would be more accurate).

Thanks guys. Other than the accent, i don't think i have problems communicating. I'm not excessively worried now lol.
Btw when does the o-week start? I heard Biomed doesn't have an o-week.

Auckland doesnt really do an O-week. Instead we have O-day, which is basically just a long tour around uni.

don't forget the hour long talk from roger booth and the bbq that follows after haha

haha rod isn't bad. He's just always happy. But then again I like epidemiology and haven't ruled out public health as a career at this stage. I did love my statistics at school :p

Oh and also the queue to get the grafton access card, which you wait in line for like 20 minutes only to find out that biomeds in first semester don't actually need it. We had our talk from Kate Snow last year.

Someone going to Health Science told me that they have o-week and INVITED me to join theirs lol.
Can i find a booklist for Uni somewhere?

And do i need to know lots of statistics for Population health?

O ic....If thats the case, then you don't have to worry. You don't need to bring any statistics you learned from school into pophlth.

They will teach you the formulas needed to interpret the data. The only maths you need to bring into pophlth is just the basic multiplications and divisions because calculators are not permitted in tests+exam.

I already bought the book Essential Epidemiology. Do you think it is necessary to buy Epidemiology for Uninitiated and Basic Epidemiology?

Nah the other two books are useless. Most of my friends found essential epidemiology useless too. But personally I used it for module 1 and 3 (especially module 3). There will be quite a few pages and chapters from essential epidemiology for "required reading." From what I remember, they test you on lecture material, not really extra material from required reading. But I think you should still do the reading anyway because it will deepen your understanding of whats going. Lecturers make references to the required reading anyway.

Thanks Gigaoblivion. I feel like asking too many questions

Valentine's Day tommorrow. Got presents for girlfriend(s)/boyfriend(s)?

np, this is a forum so ask away. I'm sure lordgarlic and toaster (and whoever is on the forum) are happy to help you too.

LOL nah don't got gf probably cus i spend too much time on my wii =P

essentially epidemiology is rubbish. you only need a few chapters which you could photocopy. Epidemiology for uninitiated can be photocopied too haha. Short loan is there for a reason.

Even if you do photocopy, you won't really use it so just save your money. The course notes are more than enough.

I got a huge pack from Uni today, something about "Orientation Welcome Programme 24-27 Feb", PHO health enrolment, UBS, Bus fees and other student discounts etc. Sounds really exciting!
They also said something about DELNA Screening. Do you know what that is?
