I asked for a stethescope for Christmas(yy)

Ha, me too! (Well actually I asked my (doctor) parents for something that they think will be useful to me, and I reckon that's what they'll get). I don't mind missing out on the cheap bulk buy prices in that case (otherwise I wouldn't get my christmas present until april or something!).

I got mine from https://www.medisave.co.nz/ (that deal for the Litmann Classic II SE they've got on the front page). It wasn't much more expensive than OUMSA's bulk buy steths. The laser engraving is a really nice touch, and the free pen light is fun too.

It seems so grown up haha, and I'm only 19

Wow congrats to everyone who made it!!! ... Which do seems like the most of u on this forum. Ur hard work obviously paid off. Merry Xmas and happy new yr to all!

would we even use a stethescope this year? i know our cardiorespiritory paper is in 2nd semester, but i thought only docs use that

you don't need a stethoscope till semester 2 of year 3.
You would only use it on yourself and your friends out of school times for giggles and ego stroking purposes only haha

13 hours later and I'm already counting down on the days till 1st of march 2010. Im quite bored and missing the days of studying for medsci (im an epic nerd, i know) so i decided to dig around for some info on our year 2 courses, and i ran across this: https://aumsa.wikidot.com/acrane-s-notes-mbchb-2. I see an entire semester of sleepless nights coming up...

and what sucks even more is that I wont be able to make the freshers camp, it just HAD to be on the 19th of feb :(

You definitely need a steth for Otago. Won't need it in the first half of first semester, but after that you will need it for the clinical skills module.

Whoa, I just checked out that link. That's, uh, quite a lot of information, there. But it looks very interesting, looking forward to reading over that sometime. :) Ah, that sucks that you can't make it to Freshers'.

im curious, what is the 2nd year's schedule like? is it similar to 1st year? im hoping that the classes are in the morning since there's only 1 stream

Not similar to first year at all. Firstly you won't be getting Wednesday off. In first semester, your first lecture is at 8. In second semester, its mostly 9. Lectures don't happen all at once. You will have a lot of 1hr, sometimes up to 3 hr breaks between lectures and waiting for labs, tutorials etc. So there aren't any of the really early finishes you used to get. The schedule is a bit different week by week too. But typically, you will have a 2/3 long days in a week where you stay from 8-5ish. And some shorter ones which are 8-1? Theres only 1 stream for lectures, but you will get put in different groups for things like small group activities, labs, and clinical skills tutorials.

Lol at the people buying stethoscopes already - talk about your walking cliches.

I think I'm the opposite to most, I'm quite glad that there's still over 2 months till it starts up as a couple of weeks into the first semester the workload will probably mean we will be begging for holidays anyway. ^_^

Oi! Us Otago students have an information booklet that quite clearly states that we need stethoscopes for 2nd year, so when my parents offered to buy me one for christmas that wasn't the sort of offer I was going to turn down.

Just be careful what you say. Besides, it's not like I intend on turning up to the first med lecture with it around my neck or anything! :p^_^

Haha, apologies, I'll restrict my reference to the Auckland students.

Ha imagine if someone flew down on the plane with their stethoscope round their neck.....I'd pay them to do that

have fun living at university. 4 days a week will be 8-4 or 8-5 in your first semester. watch your social life vanish

hahaha huge ray of sunshine you are garlic :p o well, least first years over. Key thing to focus on for next two months :D merry christmas all, have a good one (yy)

Interesting findings gwalker! Wow it seems another hell of a year is waiting for us (if not worse). But at least the pressure of pass or die is OVER.

For those who have down 2nd year med, are those notes on that website exactly what we are gonna learn next year? Btw do lots of med students actually use that site? It didn't seem to have loads of posts lol.

Oh and Merry Xmas everyone!!!
