We still need to maintain a good average otherwise the dean will screw us over, but yea thank god we've secured our places. Apparently the notes are written by a student, im guessing s/he took a laptop with them and documented everything. I hope it's a good representation of whats to come coz if there's much more to it than that, i dont know how i'll manage will all that memorising.

But lets worry about that later :D

Interesting findings gwalker! Wow it seems another hell of a year is waiting for us (if not worse). But at least the pressure of pass or die is OVER.

For those who have down 2nd year med, are those notes on that website exactly what we are gonna learn next year? Btw do lots of med students actually use that site? It didn't seem to have loads of posts lol.

Oh and Merry Xmas everyone!!!

2nd year isn't hell you poor children. It actually is quite managable and teh content isn't too bad at all. It only gets worse as you progress through med school :P

I cant help but get ahead of myself. Are we gonna have any clinical visits this year?

On another note, there are ~60 people so far that have enrolled in our classes. Im still waiting on an reply from FMHS which should come near january, anyone here enrolled?

You don't have to do anything. Getting into med means you never have to enrol in anything on ndeva ever again...I think.

And you get one clinical visit, to a GP in second semester. You get to watch a GP for 3 hours, seeing a grand total of about 6 patients - yay.

Does Auckland med school use cadavers? For some reason I have an idea only Otago does. Just curious.

It might have been the documentary saying Otago was one of the last universities in the world to have siginificant cadaver dissection, forgetting that the other med school in NZ also does, that gave you that idea. We use cadavers a lot at Auckland. From what skyglow told me, Otago uses cadavers about 4 hrs in total the whole year. At Auckland, we have 3 hours of cadaver dissection labs each week. So there is quite a high emphasis on it here.

Naa a friend of mine tells me they definately use cadavers here. I think auckland and otago's curriculums are extremely similar, just like year 1. it would be quite troublesome to have them different in any way. We can even transfer between the schools at 6th year (but not before)

And i'm already looking forward to our GP visit (yy)

Ha yeah well I guess they don't want anyone to feel hard done by. Pfft and who would want to transfer to Auckland med school!?:lols::tongue:
Man I'm excited we actually get to cut the cadavers, not just look at a dead leg or cut a dear joint. Its going to be so cool. But a bit freaky seeing their face.

What text books do we need for first semester? Because on the UBS bookshop website there are bogloads of books for MBChB II! I cant afford that many books!!! (especially on top of 11 grand a year)

You only need to buy one really. Buy Moore's Clinically Oriented Anatomy. You will use that craploads in first semester - it will be your anatomy lecturer. I also bought Netter's Atlas, which has lots of pretty pictures and helps you understand Moore's. Other than that you shouldn't need to buy anything else. Any other books you probably will only use once or twice, so you can just get them from the library.

Say toaster, where'd you get yours from? its not showing up on uni bookshop's website.

EDIT: holy shi- these are expensive textbooks. I think ill goto the philson library and check out a couple first, including grey's. But i guess we're better off than otago students, they already have to spend $1400 for "equiptment, instruments and books"

Some people use the Drake's greys. Its supposed to have better diagrams and be easier to read. But the lecturer bases her lectures on Moores, so it may be advantageous to get it that. Yeah, I got them from Medical Books, next to the Liggins.

Cheers, also would you suggest getting a laptop, or are the facilities at Grafton sufficient?

You can normally get a computer, eventually. Though like close to exam time it does get a bit crazy at IC. And theres usually something you can do that doesn't require a computer, like study in the library. So I hardly ever brought my laptop in, and neither does anyone else really.

Say guys, you know how on the reply slip it says that we have to decline any other offer for any degree for 2010 semester 1? would we also have to drop out of biomed or is that done automatically? on nDeva it still says

I assume it means we have to cancel the BSc (Biomedical Science) programme altogether (though someone will need to clarify this).

However, I'm not actually sure how to do this via nDeva.

Mine still lists BSc (Biomedical Science) as one of my programmes. I have no idea how to get rid of it...but it didn't stop me from being in med this year...so I guess you can just leave it too.
