Hi, I was wondering if I could get some guidance from any current MBChB students? This semester I got A+, A and A- across my core papers, so even with an A+ for Medsci142 I can only get a core 8.25. From what I've read here I get the impression this is dangerously low. Is this correct? i.e would I need a perfect interview score to stand a chance? Thanks.

I mean at the end of the day it depends on how well the rest of your cohort do. Don't worry too much about your grades relative to others and just concentrate on doing the best you can in medsci 142. Then do your best in the interview

On a side note, I miss teaching medsci142, I really should have come back as a lead tutor this year haha. Would have been great fun :P

For volunteer work, I suggest https://www.stjohn.org.nz/products/feds.aspx

Hospice would be good also. I'm still volunteering for that one.

I don't think the lack volunteering is really that disadvantageous. It's more important to be eloquent, and if you do have volunteer work, to show that you've learnt things from it.

Thanks lambchops, hamlock fro your advice. I started with vol work at the Medical Center in my locality and later got offered a admin job at the same place. But you guys are right – its all about how you portray your personality in the interview. I guess they would be looking for sincerity, honesty and genuine interest in the profession.

I'm kind of in the same boat - got A+ A and A in my core. Will have to get A+ in MedSci to be in the race!

on the topic of volunteer work, don't jump on the bandwagon 3 months before the interview and start volunteer work for the sake of getting into med school.

Volunteer work is supposed to be something you are passionate about and want to dedicate your spare time towards a particular cause. It actually looks quite bad in the interview if you have only done it for a few months for the purpose of getting into med school.

The interviewers do understand that not everyone has time for volunteer work. If you are working part time 20 hours a week and this is your first year away from home, they won't be expecting you to play 5 sports, join 4 organizations and spend every weekend volunteering. They expect you to be trying your hardest to make ends meet and see if you have any strategies to cope with med school next year

it hasn't really be updated :p still the same old information year after year

The short answer is YES, there is an auto reject category independent of your grades. As to how bad you have to be, I think last year about 10 people got that grade.

why do you ask? do you think the interview is your achilles heel? if you think it is, you still have time to think about things. Look at the list of personal attributes and think about how they could ask you questions

General Ed

Hi :), has anyone done SCIGEN 101G as their general ed in previous years? Just wondering... it sounds intersting but i'm worried about the level of difficulty involved.

I did it last year, and I'd advise you against it for the following:
-3 important assignments that you are given alot of time to work on naturally end up being crammed and it's pretty stressful
-in the final exam, the biggest question relates to case studies that you'll be doing throughout the semester, so you're expected to attend all the lectures, and they come in the wrong times
-despite it's purpose of being a communication skills course, its more or less useless in that regard
-the assignments need more effort than you'll be willing to give
-you'll end up with a crap mark despite their ascertainations that "it's possible to get in the A's"

good luck on chosing a gen ed paper, I know how annoying it is

Hey really appreciate you advice - thanks a lot - I've changed my gen-ed to PHIL 105G. Only hope I've made a good choice!

Phil is a good choice mostly since you dont have a final exam which gives you more time to study for whats important. Good luck with it; it has some interesting mind games
