Hi there.

So I received an ATAR of 97.00 and 84 in the UMAT. I'm also eligible for EAS.

My questions is why did I receive an interview offer from UNSW for med. I understand that there are many more people with much more competitive ATAR and UMAT scores that may have missed out. Even considering EAS my marks are still not exactly the most competitive.

So can someone explain the rationale behind giving me an offer.

I'm obviously grateful for the opportunity to attend the interview but realistically I believe the chances of me getting in even with a good interview are near impossible.

The explanation is most definitely the EAS that you've been eligible for. We aren't sure how this is quantified or what the magnitude of the applied bonus is, so definitely don't sell yourself short at the interview, you could be much more competitive than you think.
 
If you don't mind saying, what did you receive the EAS for? I think they assess according to how many categories you are in and the severity.

There's no such thing as "Sydney time" ;)

AEST is Australian Eastern Standard Time, so, at this time of the year, this refers to the time on the east coast when daylight savings is not applied (basically, at the moment: Queensland, because they're weirdos, and like, "think of the cows!!!!11!11!!". Or something.) For all eastern states who do observe daylight savings (including New South Wales but excluding Broken Hill, because they're operating on Australian Central Daylight Time at the moment with South Australia), the time zone is referred to as Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) and is one hour ahead of AEST. So 3pm AEST would be 4pm AEDT.

Have you started uni? If yes what’s your GPA? Are you rural?

If no then I really don’t get why I didn’t get an interview. I applied for special consideration & tick off every single box for disadvantage besides being a single parent. I have 98.55 ATAR, 6.26 GPA (82 WAM) & 88%ile UMAT. My GPA (I just finished my 2nd year of uni full time) according to this table converts to a 97 ATAR so idk what’s going on.

I’ve seen a person in a previous year get an UNBONDED offer with 98.05 ATAR, 92%ile UMAT with EAS (not rural). My close friend got 98.50 ATAR, 68%ile UMAT & got a bonded Unsw offer by only ticking off the ‘attend disadvantage school’ box EAS

Yeah, I was absolutely thinking of the fact you got a rejection when I saw this person's post. Are you thinking you might follow up and seek clarification?

Already did

I emailed them earlier this year asking if they are considering me in the EAS pool because I thought last year I should’ve got an interview since my GPA was really strong & from previous years people got full offers with scores lower than mine. They didn’t reply. I emailed again today & will wait for a response but to be honest I’m just going to call them on Monday in the morning.

Also feels warm knowing you thought about me when you read the post haha thanks <3
 
Hi guys, can anyone give an overview of what medicine is like at UNSW? (is there case-based learning, positives, negatives, etc). Thanks heaps
 
Another 3 weeks to go for the IB results to come out. :(
What do you recon I would need for ATAR with a 182 /92nd percentile UMAT for a UNSW interview invite ?

A little over 99 probably to scrape in. I got a 92 as well but didn't get in with 97.55 ATAR/7.00 GPA which I assume is around 98.6.

According to a post in another thread UNSW has said this year 99.45 needs close to 186.
So 182 will need around 99.60, or IB 43 for you.

Thank you for your response.
I did get an email from UNSW stating that they will let the IB applicants know on 11th of Jan if they are eligible for an interview. They also noted the below in their email which may be common knowledge but I found interesting.

“Our experience since implementing an interview as part of our selection process is that the preference for almost all interstate applicants is to enter a medical school in their home state. They apply to UNSW Medicine just in case they are not offered a place in a medical school closer to home. As a result, fewer than 5% of interstate applicants who are selected for an interview eventually enrol in our course.”

Could possibly mean that only 5% spots are left open for the second round for IB and interstate applicants ?
