General Interview Discussion 2018

Hi Priyanka,
Once you meet the cut off for an interview, your ATAR and UMAT no longer matter as long as they were above the cut off to get an interview. The offer is based 100% off the interview, so yes you can definitely get an offer if you do well in the interview. Best of luck :)

Oh wow that gives me some hope! Thankyou!!

Just got an interview offer for Monash so I guess interview offers are out? Are they all released at the same time? My scores were umat 96th (all above the 50 cut off) and atar 99.4

Hey everyone,
I have a question regarding the Monash MMIs. I understand that Monash interviewees sign an NDA and if this question is too specific or risking breaking that NDA please ignore it.

Are the MMIs focused at all on the individual? In other words, will the stations predominantly revolve around scenarios rather than asking me things such as my own motivations, weaknesses, interests, extracurriculars and volunteering?

So my situation with UNSW has been “settled”.

My scores:
ATAR: 98.55 | GPA: 6.2, 2 yr FTE (97 atar equiv.)

Atar+gpa combo = 97.78 (not confirmed by uni but using the black & white table)

UMAT: 178 (88%ile)

Special consideration: attended disadvantage school + financial disadvantage my whole life + other things I don’t wanna say

Interview? No

————————

Another forum member’s scores:
ATAR: 97.00

UMAT: 84%ile

Special consideration: attended disadvantaged school

Interview? Yes
=================

Emailed & phoned unsw like 30 times over the last week - probably spent 10 hours altogether doing so. Finally got my special consideration application assessed again. The decision was that my atar equivalent goes from 97.78 to 98.12.

I am so frustrated & feel like I’m being treated so so so so so unfairly. I was told that with my Umat I would’ve needed a 99.85 atar to score an interview. With the other forum member’s 174 Umat score they probably would’ve needed a 99.95 ATAR or 100.00 ATAR lolll.

Attending disadvantaged school + my other disadvantages = +0.34 atar

Attending disadvantaged school = +3 ATAR

Interesting. Who do I talk to now that I’ve dealt with head of med admissions, special considerations & Unsw future students?

I think this is unfair and quite frankly have you considered escalating it to the someone higher up in UNSW like a chancellor?

I just found the dean’s email so might give that a go in a bit. Idk if that’s the right person to email but I guess it’s worth a try

Sorry to hear of such bad news.
I can only guess while the other person is school leaver, you're non-standard so the bonus for disadvantaged school is less?

But you should argue with the Dean since UNSW still counts ATAR for non-standards you should be given the same.

Yeah probably

If they just tell me that I’d get it but they didn’t. They kept saying that the other applicant PROBABLY has other circumstances & that they don’t want to look into the other applicant’s details.

But yeah I agree it’s probably because I’m non-standard

There is merit in the idea that once you have a record of tertiary study your disadvantages are weighted less. Although I would have thought that your higher UMAT and ATAR would have balanced that out.

You could always try contacting the Dean, you have nothing to lose.

Hey Smelly Boy,

I'm in a similar situation to you in regards to UNSW med. I applied for SCATS with a relatively high UMAT and GPA but still didn't receive an interview offer. I'm not sure what to do now because the interviews are this week and when I got into contact with them they basically relayed the same information.

I emailed the Dean now. Will let you know what he replies. I think A1 and q2017 are right. Probably once we start tertiary education then any disadvantage we faced is worth f*** all i think hahaha

What were your scores btw?
