Griffith Griffith Dentistry: Admissions General Discussion

Hey guys, new to this forum and to this discussion. I have only found out that Griffith accept candidates from a tertiary degree (currently have an application awaiting unimelb DDS). I was just wondering if I am to also apply through QTAC? I have searched through the griffith handbook and BDS website however I can't find a direct email for faculty of dent/health sciences.

Also from my understanding, the BDS does not require UMAT for mature age applicants?

Any clarification or direction on this process is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure how to edit my initial post however the second part of my question has been answered via the entrance table. Great idea to formulate one!

Yes, you can apply through either QTAC/UAC. No UMAT for Griffith.

Ps - Griffith doesn't have a BDS degree if you want to be technical lol.

Thanks Yamster, greatly appreciate the quick response :) I thought only ACT and NSW apply through UAC? Either way will now apply through QTAC

Haha I am intrigued, what is it now called? It seems we do 2 years BDHS, 1 year BOH, 2 years Masters?

Furthermore, I know the website states that deferral is not permitted, however is this strictly enforced and under no circumstances permitted?

Thank you

Hey Dentine,

It's a 3 years Bachelors and 2 years master if I recall correctly. It's a Bachelor of Dental Health Science + Masters of Dentistry. Before, it used to be a Bachelor of Oral Health Science and a Grad Diploma in Clinical Dentistry or something to that regard. It should be noted that the masters component is full fee if you didn't know that.

acbard9 received an offer last year, I'm not sure if he was able to defer it. I'll tag him for you to see if he could.

I have also noticed that the Griffith percentages for HD/D differ - does this mean that an 80 on my current uni degree will be considered a 6 in the application process?

Thanks in advance

Awesome thank you very much for the response, immensely appreciated!

I have also noticed that the Griffith percentages for HD/D differ to UWA ie UWA HD = 80 whilst Griffith appears to be 85 - does this mean that an 80 on my current uni degree will be considered a 6 in the application process?

Ahh, a topic that is debated on these forums. I think the general consensus is that if you apply via the various TACs/UACs then they go off what grades your home university uses, whereas, if you're applying through GEMSAS for post-grad med then it's definitely scaled.

Yeh I was reading another thread regarding a similar topic with UOM however both QTAC and the uni didn't quite answer the question haha. Interestingly gemsas appear to be more generous in their scaling ie 75-79 = 6.75 rather than a 6

A few MSO members have checked and been confirmed both UAC and QTAC go by the grade codes on your transcript, 80+ or 85+ HD doesn't matter to them.

It's all "scientific" rather than generous. For Gemsas 70-74 = 6, 75-79 = 6.5, 80+ = 7
If your transcript shows a mark between 75-79 you get 6.5, not 6.75
Otoh if it shows Distinction without a mark (like at oddball UQ) it could be anywhere between 75-84, thus between 6.5 & 7 = 6.75

Thanks for that A1! Hopefully this is the case, I have also emailed QTAC regarding the issue and will post their response here.

Ahh yep yep sorry my bad, not sure why I keep thinking it's 6.75, I think that was the case a couple years ago - definitely still in favour of the 6.5 'scientific' process/scaling however as it's more reflective of an individuals performance.

I was unfortunately unable to defer my offer :( .

Sorry to hear Acbard - was it on/did they suggest any sort of special grounds or you just requested a general deferral and received a rejection? Also did you end up taking the offer in the end?

Cheers

Dentine

My emails do not seem to suggest that deferral was an option, and I did not seek to apply for deferral, so perhaps you will be more successful in your pursuit if you do request a deferral :) I unfortunately could not take the offer at the end.

Thanks for that acbard, do you know if there are any repercussions/issues with re applying the following year if you have to reject an offer?

Thanks

Definitely not, you just apply through QTAC or UAC again the following year - the only repercussion would be if you only just made it in on the GPA cutoff and then the cutoff increased the following year (as you’d need to be competitive against the applicants within each year) so if you were in that position you could run the risk of not gaining entry again after declining your offer.

Hi everyone,
First time poster. I've completed a year of full time study and obtained a GPA of 6.875. I've just been reading through the forums and was wondering whether there have been any cases on MSO where an applicant with this GPA has not received an offer from Griffith?

Don't think so - you should be safe! (fingers crossed).

Hey Yamster, do you know if they use a second criteria for admissions (I.e. your bachelors GPA if you've done standalone honours, or your atar, etc..) or is that only used for a tiebreaker?

They'd use it as a tiebreaker if they were deciding between two candidates for the last spot for example.
