JCU JCU Dentistry: Non-Standard Entry

On mine it just says pending. But I am enrolled in the JCU’s preparatory math unit.
Has anyone previously completed this unit and know the contact hours for the workshops.
Oh okay thanks! Is that for the application form as well as your pre reqs? Mine says satisfied for all but also says satisfied to handing the correct application form in? I completed the two units for the pre reqs last year, I’m not sure the hours though, have you tried the contacts section on the JCU portal?

Thanks I’ll give that a go. I just worked out my email address. :). Do you mean when you click on it you see a break down, and they have received and processed the written application. And yes or no to each prerequisite.

See how you go with that ☺️, if no luck, i’d email the lecture and ask or put it in the forum and see if any other students can help 😀.
Mine says satisfied now when it used to say pending, however in the breakdown when you click into entry requirements, mine says satisfied for everything, but with the application form on the first line it says ‘satisfied- the required form has been submitted’, I just wanted to see if anyone else’s says that or just satisfied 😊

Hi. Read over the website and wasn’t able to find any information regarding the number of non standard applicant places accepted per year. Does anyone have any information about this? Also would love to hear from anyone that has successfully got into the program from non standard entry. Thanks

Hi, I have seen comments on this thread that there has been confirmation from JCU admissions only 8-10 places are allocated for non- standard applicants.

Hi guys.

Unfortunately I did not receive even an interview offer for med, so does that mean I ought not to have high hopes for dentistry?

I’m a nonstandard applicant with a 6.875 GPA after 1 yr of uni.

It’s hard to say, but from an academic point of view I would say you’re competitive. JCU however, relies heavily on the written application for offers to their programs and also rurality.

Howdy,

I was wondering if there is any information on how the grading of research honours is weighted for entry into JCU dent. I am from JCU and I did hear one of my instructors mention that prior honours students who applied ended up getting in. I ended up missing the entrance cycle for last year, as my research was heavily disrupted by covid. In the meantime, I decided to do an MPhil with JCU to try and keep me busy and hedge my bets.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Honours and bachelor degrees give you the same selection rank. So no added bonuses. Qtac said my selection rank for both were the same (I had a similar gpa for both).

Just a little confused here so what you are saying is that they provide you with a separate selection ranking for your honours and a separate one for your bachelor? I had two very different GPA's kinda just floated through uni in my first year and finished on a 5.8. I ended up also recieving Class 1a on my honours so I am assuming that would be a GPA of 7 equivalent.

Sorry if I'm just not reading your answer right. I'm just trying to get all my ducks in line haha

Hello, how much of a disadvantage am I at for not coming from a health background?
There’s no singular employment/experience background that puts you at an advantage over all others (or lack of that background that puts you at a disadvantage). As long as you can use the background you do have to appropriately, engagingly, and meaningfully answer the written application questions, you’re in with a shot.

We asked people to report their background last year (or the year before?? time is flying!) when reporting their JCU Med offers and there really was no clear pattern at all. I’d imagine it’s the same for Dent.

I’m assuming the message here is that a 1a honours = 7GPA = X selection rank, and that a bachelor degree 7GPA = the same X selection rank. That the former was achieved as an honours degree doesn’t give it extra weight.

Hi just wondering if a GPA of 6.25 (one year of study of bachelors) would be competitive? I understand the written application has a high weighting but just wondering if my GPA would still be good enough?

I also have lots of clinical experience (dental assistant for 5+ years). Would it also help my application to gain some rural experience? I'm thinking of going to North Queensland for a week at a dental practice to gain more rural experience.

Yes, that has been competitive enough previously, obviously depending on the quality of the written application as you've pointed out.

Rural experience would be beneficial but is not necessarily essential for a successful application.

is there data available for GPA acceptance for past JCU interviews? They have median stars available but not GPA so if anyone is aware of what is considered decent that would be useful. Also will JCU for this November round only look at your current GPA or are non-standard applicants not even getting interviews this round?
Thanks heaps

It will be probably around the medicine or a bit lower so maybe the 6.2 mark? Also is there an interview for dentistry? From the email when we submitted our applications, it states there is only interview invites for Medicine not dent

=========================

Ok so i called JCU, there are no interviews. Solely based of ur GPA/ATAR and Application and ur Letters that you submitted. GPA wise im still guessing something above 6 will be competitive. Anyone with previous data please feel free to add to mine. :)
