JCU JCU Dentistry: Non-Standard Entry

Hey guys, commenting on an old thread here but hoping i can get some advice.

I was wondering what my options may be like for getting an offer for JCU dent? I am a non-standard applicant. Bunch of clinical experience and a GPA of 6.5 (completed 1 year FTE of 3 year degree). Also have research experience (PhD - incomplete & published paper) - unsure if this helps tbh. No special considerations.

A GPA of 6.5 is competitive but your offer chances will largely come down to the quality of your written application, which we obviously have no idea about. Good luck regardless!

Thanks C

Thanks Crow! Do you have any stats from previous non-standard students applying for JCU dent (i.e GPA scores) and their offer outcomes?
Would be interested in knowing.
Otherwise, do you know how many positions are offered in their dental program each year? I have heard that it is more than others like CSU.

Thanks C

You can check our Offers subforum where we have collated the data posted on MSO in the past few years. We have very few offers reported from non-standard applicants to JCU dentistry, though, because very few places are on offer for this "quota".

According to our dentistry entrance criteria table, there are 113 places on offer for domestic applicants. Only a very small number of these are reserved for non-standard applicants.

Thanks C

Last year, 30 non-standard, 36 school leaver.

Do you mind sharing where you've got this information from? The course information booklet says only a "limited number of places" are available for non-school leavers.

This info is shown in QTAC course search - student profiles.
Just checked it out too - I am interested by 1. The fact that the cohort was made up of only 66 rather than 80, and 2. The fact that 45% of the cohort is from a non-standard background despite the wording in JCU's guide clearly indicating otherwise! Good news for non-standard applicants in future if they retain this approximate distribution.

I’m in the same boat. It seems like our likelihood of getting in is lower compared to non-standard applicants due to limited places they offer for applicants like us. Plus my GPA isn’t great. But having a solid dental background as an OHT until now and working rurally/remotely across different towns around NSW and Victoria is my only bullet for this application. I’ve only provided 2 but solid referees. Whether I get in or not, I know I’ve done my best for my application. Good luck everyone and don’t stress too much XD.

Question though, will it affect my application if I did not put JCU as my first preference?
Hi, did you end up getting an offer for dentistry and if so which uni? I’ve recently graduated as an OHT but wanting to get into dentistry and have so before doing OHT. I’ve herd that those who already have an OHT degree are less likely to get an offer?

Where did you read that? I would think the opposite at a uni like JCU where you get to express your interest with the application.

Someone with an OHT friend who applied for dent at numerous universities which wasn’t offered a place including JCU. I believe they had a GPA of 7.

Just because they werent offered a place doesn't reflect on all applicants with OHT degree, I see no reason why any university would discourage OHT's

What is more likely is this 'friend of a friend' of yours didnt have a good UCAT. Just about every dental school this year except JCU will do an interview round solely on UCAT, so they dont even get to look at your GPA.

Also did they apply to Griffith? A 7 GPA would be a shoo in there in previous years cause they were GPA only up until this year.

hello

I am thinking of applying to JCU dental this year. I am in my first year of biomed. I was wondering what gpa is considered competitive for 2022 entry for a non rural/non seas applicant with experience in research, hospital volunteering and shadowing.

any general feedback is also appreciated. Thanks.

Are you talking about medical related or dental related research, hospital volunteering and shadowing?
