JMP JMP: General Entry Discussion

I understand that UCAT is used to sub rank applicants after primarily ranking on the interview. ie if we both scored the same on the interview and you were 3040 for UCAT you would be ahead of me on a UCAT of 3020.

But don't lose hope - last year I was contacted by phone about 3 days before the semester started and offered a top up place.

did you decline the phone offer and have a new position offered this year?

Yes I did, that was a really tough call as there are no guarantees (other than I know my GPA wasn't going to change). It was a Thursday afternoon call, decide by Friday and start Tuesday.
I would have had to leave my job in Sydney (supposed to give a months notice), relocate that weekend and start straight away; probably doable if you're leaving school but I'm quite non standard...

So I re-sat the UCAT (improved a bit), then clearly did a little better in the interview.

I'm not sure about enrolling, but yes, you're right on the acceptance of the offer. As long as you do so by the deadline, it's fine.

Not sure if this is the right sub for this question but I was accepted into the JMP and haven’t done science since year 10 in high school (7 years ago) there is a bridging course available but I’ve heard mixed reports about whether or not I should do it. Any advice?

Both bonded and non-bonded places are Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs), but bonded ones will have Bonded Medical Place somewhere in the offer as well. If yours doesn’t mention Bonded Medical Place then it’s probably unbonded. Congrats

I wouldn't advise it, even though I'm not at JMP. I was in the same boat as you, hadn't done any science since year 11 which was 4 years ago last year, but the course has no prerequisites for a reason - they will (hopefully) teach it as if you have very little science knowledge. If it was required, they'd make students do chemistry or physics or biology in high school. If you really want to brush up, you can watch a little Crash Course chem/bio on youtube a couple of weeks before the semester starts like I did, I found this helped a little.

I was, it says try 6 hours after you accept. I accepted at around 8am. There's not much in there right now though so no rush.
Btw, does anyone know whether it's possible to get an unbonded place for the same course in the second round? (I got a BMP this round).

Some universities do this but it’s not a common occurrence generally. I think it tends to happen directly via the uni rather than through an offer round, but that can vary, too. We don’t get this reported as happening very often for JMP so it’s hard to say.

I would contact the uni to check , but if you get UNE & put UoN as your first preference it generally means you didn't make the cut-off for UON and you won't be able to get a offer from UON later on as unlike other programs, the code is the same for this course hence you can't get an offer for something you reject.

No, it’s not possible. In the past, the JMP have made this very clear. I’ve not looked for ages, but I suspect it’s still the case. You have to apply directly to the program to request a transfer and they are basically never granted. We’ve never had anyone here at MSO be successful with this, despite multiple attempts.

I would brush up on chemistry and just learn the basics: chemical reactions, periodic table, bonds and forces, molecules and lattices, etc. that will just make classes 100x easier because you’ll be familiar with the language used and the basic principles. I haven’t started med yet but last year for uni we had to do biomolecules (which we will be learning in the jmp) and that would have been so much harder without already having done some chem. Chemistry: The Central Science is a textbook that you‘ll be able to find for free as a PDF and should be all you need to get started.

I believe you can accept and defer later, but that’s 100% something I’d double check with JMP directly tomorrow (and get the reply in writing). Congrats on your offer

I bet JMP doesn't even have a complete answer to that at this early stage in the year as it will very likely depend on how the COVID situation develops as the year goes by.

I’m not sure about UoN, but UNE have advised that lectures will be online, tutorials on campus for some units and practical components on campus where possible - plus facilities all open again. This isn’t JMP specific though and is almost definitely subject to change.
