LaTrobe La Trobe Dentistry: General Discussion

Hi Everyone!
I'm planning on studying Bachelor of Dental Science this year at Latrobe Bendigo.
Does any current dent students at Latrobe have any advice on whether to do on/off accommodation? and if you recommend on campus accommodation, then out of units/terrace/hillside do you think is most suitable if I'm looking for affordable and clean/good utilities and also which one usually has more dent students ? Also does Latrobe do catering or do we have to cook ourselves?
This thread has some very useful information:

Personally, I think it's better to start living on campus then move off campus later with a group of friends. University residential staffs are generally more attentive and ethical then private landlords. For example, if you accidentally lock yourself out of the room in the middle of the night, you can ask the night manager/security guards to open the door for you. Another example is that they may adjust your rental rental agreement when university policies affect your studies (eg: pause or cancel your rent when the uni switches to online learning). Most on-campus accommodations are also located to next to the campus, so it's more convenient.

Just out of curiosity, how did you get an offer so early? Was it from the Aspire Program?

Unluckydude we’ve had two people report offers to date, one non-standard, one gap year student, both on Nov 20th.
Yeah, those two applicants already had their atar/gpa when they received their offers. Anonn mentioned predicted ATAR earlier in the thread so I thought Anonn might be a school-leaver.

Anonn has mentioned the Aspire program in another post so possibly, yep.

ETA: or they are hoping for an offer still and their ‘plan’ relies on this coming to fruition!

Thank you! And nope I haven't received an offer yet and didn't get the Aspire Program but I got a 99+ atar so am hoping for an offer :))

Hi, from speculation is it possible that the ATAR drops possibly to a high 98, my ATAR was 98.75 haha :(
Also is la trobe open to gap yearing, or do they require you to start next year if I were to get in. Is anyone 100% on this one lol
Thankssss!!

There is already a reported early offer to a gap year student. Can’t get much more 100% than that. Obviously, it’s always important to recognise that entry criteria can change from one year to the next, so that’s no guarantee for 2022 entry.

Sorry could you clarify what you mean by early offer?

This table says that we can't defer dental science, could someone please clarify this?

Offers based on known uni results and gap year ATAR were made in November. We had two reported here, one of which was a gap year student.

I don’t think there’s much to clarify re. the deferral statement. La Trobe doesn’t allow successful students to defer Dent offers. You’d have to apply again the following year if wanting to take a gap year (for example). There are a number of universities that take this position with Med and Dent offers.

Someone I know with a 98.70 ATAR got into latrobe dent last year. If you have seas I think youll be able to get an offer - not 100% though

As I mentioned earlier, Latrobe hands out SEAS marks very generously. Last year the official cut-off for the normal pathway was 99.20, but if adjustment factors were excluded, the median was only 99.10, meaning that about half of the offers were given to applicants with a raw ATAR below the official cut off.

That being said, I personally don't think the official cut-off will drop to a high 98. According to VTAC, 950 students applied for Latrobe dent in November last year and 1035 students applied in November this year. Latrobe is likely to admit more international students this year and the non-rural cut-offs for almost all med/dent schools went up this year. Additionally, a member on this forum applying for internal transfer with a WAM of 90 got an outright rejection letter while someone else with a 90 WAM got an early offer last year. I could be wrong because one of the early offers was given to an applicant with 99.05 ATAR + 95% UCAT. Latrobe's website seems to suggest that ATAR is used for gap year students who have not done any tertiary studies.

I think you have to re-apply every year. They don't normally allow students to defer they dent offers. I'm not sure if they'll use your ATAR or UCAT when you re-apply after a GAP year.

Hello. I have just graduated high school in WA with an atar of 98.85. Is it even remotely possible for me to receive a first round offer from la trobe (bachelor of dental science) on the 14th of Jan? I an not an seas applicant nor a rural applicant. Please be as honest as possible, I don't want to get my hopes up. :)

thank you

Unfortunately, 98.85 is unlikely to land you an offer if you're an non-rural + non-seas applicant.

Thank you! Would a 99.55 ATAR (year 12 school leaver) not get an offer?

Sorry for my first reply, I'm having two conversations at once!

I have no idea, sorry. I just got the info by googling the LaTrobe website. Have you looked at the collated data threads from this year and previous years? We don't get much data but there's usually a little bit.

ETA: lol, both conversations are with you! No wonder I was confused! 😂

There's a really strict chem and bio prerequisite so if you didn't do both they won't give you an offer regardless of your ATAR. (they don't allow you to enrol in a bridging course - you have to have them done in year 12 or before applying).

I also applied via this pathway for 2021 intake and surprisingly was rejected with a 92 wam. I personally find it hard to believe a 92+ wam would be the cutoff this year but it must've been super competitive. What's weird was they sent outright rejection letters in December this year as opposed to their usual format of sending offers until February. I called them to explain this sudden change, I was told by the admissions team they were not even considering top up offers for internal transfer applicants.

I thought I was in a good spot considering the lowest wam intake I knew of was 89.6 for the previous application cycle but boy was I shocked when I got the email.

Nonetheless, I suspect the change in this years procedure could be because of the university's lost revenue from international students and them having to reduce the number of CSP spots?? Or maybe to reserve more spots for internationals instead to try and recover their money? I have no idea if they plan on maintaining this stance for the 2022 cycle.

Either way I was fortunate enough to get into Griffith dentistry with a 7 GPA so I'm happy at the end of the day.
