Med and Dent - 2018 Entry (Place Offers and Discussion)

I doubt it. I was told as I had requested unbonded, I will be skipped and an offer will be made to the next applicant on the list. So gutted as was so hopeful. I was told I wouldn't be disadvantaged as an interstate student bit I don't understand this outcome.
Did you specify to the admissions office that you were an interstate student and did the interview on the 23rd Jan? Or did you even an earlier round?

When did you call UAC/ UNSW? At my interview, I heard that interstate offers will be out on the 31st Jan.

I truly sympathise with you for not getting an offer. However, by the sounds of things you aren't being disadvantaged because you are an interstate student; you are being "disadvantaged" because you weren't willing to accept (or at least didn't put on your preferences) a bonded position. The bonded positions are designed to serve the current needs of healthcare in Australia; if you aren't willing to accept one yet someone else is, they are naturally going to be accepted over you in this position if all the CSP positions have been allocated.

The interview was only 2 days ago, are you saying they already have your final ranking result?

I had my interview in early Jan. I did the IB and results were out on the same day, 42. I had a remark that increased my result to 43. It was only updated by UNSW yesterday morning.
Crow I would have been happy with a bonded offer but wasnt allowed to change it. I would look to gain med experience in all areas of Australia as I believe there is much to be gained in variety.
Also, are you implying that CSP places are awarded to local students above interstate applicants and all applicants put bonded as their preference? Sorry but I followed the advice given at Uni expos.
If offers are made to local applicants before all Y12 results are available -how is this a fair system?
Curious to know if anyone with a high IB did get an offer.
I can past information on to current IB students. Thank you.

Admissions told me in Jan that I was 3rd under the line for a CSP place before my IB result was increased. My result was only increased on their system yesterday after I called UNSW and today I had an email stating I was not successful for a CSP place. If my result was correct in the first place I wonder if I would have been eligible for an offer earlier.

I don't know how UNSW applications work, but I imagine you definitely have the option of applying for both CSP and bonded positions - naturally, this would increase your chances of gaining a place, so I'm not quite sure what the advice at the uni expos was. And no, certainly not implying that - I'm implying that when all CSP positions have been allocated to the most competitive applicants, the BMP positions are then allocated to the next most competitive applicants. If someone was competitive enough for a BMP but not a CSP, but didn't indicate they would accept a BMP in their application, then they can't then be offered a CSP just because that's all they requested. Like I said, I have sincere sympathy for you missing out on an offer (been there myself), but this particular issue doesn't seem to be a fault of UNSW.

This isn't really an issue of interstate vs local, it's more of an IB vs ATAR issue (or even an IB remark results vs ATAR issue). I agree it is unfair to IB applicants who miss out on an offer because their results weren't available, but again, UNSW isn't technically at fault here.

Out of curiosity, why did you not apply for a bonded place?

Taking an optimist's view I hope Unsw meant despite your re-marked score being above the CSP cutoff there was no more *1st round* CSP spot for you. If that's true you should be let into the combined pool for 2nd round and get a 2nd round CSP spot.

Otoh if Unsw meant you won't get 2nd round either then you have ground to appeal on two parts: either UNSW is not putting you into the combined pool, or does but raises the 2nd round CSP cutoff, which is contrary to what the UNSW website says. Follow up with them, good luck.

EtA: emphasize to Unsw that even one CSP decline from 2nd round that spot should go to you since now you must be at the top of the waitlist.

I don’t see how it’s possible for UNSW to have accurately told someone where they were on the waitlist after the early Jan interview round, given there was still a whole interview round to come in late Jan with the (very real and likely) possibility that some applicants would not only end up higher on the waitlist, but would also achieve a combined total that would make them immediately competitive for a place based on first round offer competitiveness.

If the OP was “third in line” for a CSP after the first round, then surely their position on the waitlist would only have dropped after subsequent interviews were held, not risen? Particularly given almost all late Jan interviewees only become interviewees if they have a heightened (by virtue of UNSW now knowing the cut off requirements) chance of being competitive?

But, to be honest, I’m still stuck on trying to figure out how UNSW could accurately have told someone their waitlist position when not all interviews had even been completed by then?

I wish I had come across this site before, like wow so much advice and info. I don't personally know anyone in Med and didn t really understand the impact. Especially as I don't have an issue working in any part of the country.

I spoke to admin on 17th Jan after I received my remark and as I hadn't recieved on offer to date asked where I was on the list. I was counting on the increased ATAR to give me a better chance. I was told that I would have to wait until the rest of the interstate and international interviews were completed. As UAC don't resend updated results to universities I needed to follow up, which I did by email and did again by calling on Friday 19th as had not had a response. As I didn't get a reply by mid Monday 22nd I called UNSW who informed me that med admin were not taking calls that day or the next. I called early on the 24th and was told that there was not good news. When I asked if my ATAR had been updated I was told that my upgrade was not in their system (it was a very busy time) but it was checked whilst I was on the phone and confirmed that it had increased. So between then and yesterday I am so longer eligible for a place. Sorry but I don't really understand all the rounds and placings...just feel very disappointed with myself. I thought that if someone declined an offer then it Woyld mean I had a better chance.
I chose to do the IB because I felt it would better prepare me for Medicine as I expected med to be no easy ride. IB is very challenging with 2 or 3 external exam papers per subject after two years of study which count for no less than 80% of your final mark. I sat the umat witb very little prep and did extremely well (surprised myself for sure).
Med has been my dream for so many years, just like many here I have worked hard towards my goal. We all have our own reasons for doing Med. Why UNSW? I had a bond with this uni from junior school. I loved their competition papers for school students and have done well in them and was glad they had a Med program. Maybe my lack of understanding of how things work has not helped me. I am totally numb atm as wasn't expecting this outcome. Not sure if it has sunk in yet. This is one Australia day that I will never forget. Was anyone else awaiting an offer from UNSW and had an email like me? Interested also if anyone had offers with IB results.
Thank you for your feedback and comments.

On what date were you told you were 3rd on the list? I can’t really follow your timeline.

Unfortunately, I personally can’t see that anything has gone wrong with the process, but I do think it was an error for whomever it was at UNSW who gave you the waitlist information to have done so. It is a very common occurrence that people within Medicine admissions do not have all the information and tend to be either very rigid with giving no information, or too eager to give the desperate person on the other end of the phone something hopeful that they say too much (and often inaccurate) information.

I called UTAS last year at one point and was told by the person on the other end of the line, who said they logged into my application, that I would “definitely have an offer by the end of the week”. Not only did I never get an offer, but I ended up being 6 UMAT raw marks off even being competitive.

I know it’s frustrating and distressing, but it’s also a common occurrence that incorrect and falsely hopeful information is provided by admissions staff who are just trying to help.

*If* you really were very close to getting an offer in the 1st round and given your selection rank was upgraded after the 1st cause they hadn't updated their info then you should get a 2nd round offer which is 31st of January IIRC.

Exactly what I think. Earlier saying 3rd on waitlist was to mean Runway was #3 below the CSP cutoff then with the re-mark would rise above.

UNSW released X offers in 1st round then put all remaining 1st round applicants together with interstate ones for the 2nd round offers (to apply them to the same cutoff as UNSW insists they do). This practice is proved by the fact both interstate & NSW applicants have been given 2nd round offers in previous years.

Sorry I know it's confusing but I value your input.
I was told this on 17th Jan after the 16th of Jan round in which I didn't get an offer with my ATAR of 99.4 but would have been offered bonded if I had stated so in my application. My fault for not understanding the implications. (sadly lack of advice, knowing what it meant and not knowing anyone who is doing med)
I am trying to understand the system and in no way saying that UNSW has done something wrong. What I was trying to gauge is that if after the Jan 16 there are declines to csp offers made what happens next if you are close to the line. Maybe my atar 99.7 and umat 99% were not competitive enough for the next round which I can accept. What I don't get is why I have been told now that there is no offer and does that mean I have no further chance in the last round.
I agree that the IB result timings are not helpful and from what I understand I will not be the only one who is in this position. It excludes us from the Dec rounds and possibly the first Jan round something that didn't register before. In that all interstate applicants will only be considered in the final round but we are told this will not disadvantage us. I might be completely off the mark here because I have no prior experience to go by.
