Monash Interview Structure

hey

what do u guys mean by scenerios in the interview??
and i dont really understand what the detech part is about :/
 
scenarios is when they read out or give you a 'scenario' which is basically a story about..anything they want. and then they ask you questions about it. usually its testing morals/ethics, communication skills, decision-making skills...etc

detech is just when they give you a concept/term (usually chem-related or just..real life terms e.g. personality) and you have to explain it easy to understand language, with no 'technical' terms. i generally pretend i'm explaining it to a 5-yr old or something
 
I hate detech ahhh, so so much practice and I still don't feel 100% confident on it...especially if they were to ask me something like 'explain carboxylic acid' :wacko:
 
It's best to use analogies for detech although I don't how to go about that with carboxylic acid lol (maybe something that tastes sour that comes from organic/natural substances? eg lemon) Man you guys are really getting me nerved up for monash :P my interview is on the 7th, one day before you specialk ^^ btw, do they test you about patient confidentiality? and informed consent?

analogies are awesome although i find them really hard to do. i dont think you need to worry about carboxylic acid, all the ones i've heard have been done this year have been pretty straightforward (which i found hard because i couldn't simplify a simple concept..)

i don't remember if they asked me or not, but it is quite an important element of med, so maybe practice it?

haha damn I want to find someone thats doing it on the same day :)

time to cram every single question I can find!
 
I just had my interview todya. It was alright. It went better than Griffith but worse than UNE. The detech was a bit wierd so I asked for another word and then spent like 20 seconds coming up with a good defination. That was very stressful. The otehr parts of the interview were much easier. My interview went for like 40 minutes but it felt like 5. XD

5 minutes of hell?..

I'm going to take that positively :) it's so good you can ask for another one...do you know how many options they have? I've heard 3 but I could be wrong
 
What kind of UMAT ranking / score do you need for a Monash interview? I met someone who got 93rd percentile and didn't get an interview. And special K, how do you get into the rural entry scheme for UNSW?

no idea but that's pretty insane..i suppose it makes sense because they don't interview that many people, but 93 is pretty good..
 
I dont really know how many words they give you. The interviewer gave me this chemistry based word. I knew what the word was describing but I couldnt phrase it in easier terms so I just asked for another one. My second word was a biology based word but it was easier to put in 10 years old's language.

At this moment I hate myself for assuming they would only ask Chem and social detechs <_< time to locate a Bio list from somewhere!

It was last year but my school had to fill in a UAI prediction and I think there were some supp forms, but in all honesty I don't remember it that well
 
Well the term I had was half bio half chem I guess. Its dealt with more in bio but it can be found in chem as well.
 
So just failed my interview...bad detech and tonnes of rambling :(
 
aww that sucks :( detech is usually horrible though, so don't worry too much if you screw that one up. and i suppose you never know what they're thinking until the offers are released; for all you know they might like your rambling. and you always have unsw, so you'll definitely be doing med at least
 
Hey Guys. I have my Monash interview tomorrow and was just wondering what detech terms people have been recieving. It's the not knowing bit that's killing me.
Also. When asked what about the monash course stands out to me what should i be saying?
 
My nerves just got the better of me, so I hope they managed to take out my responses from the rest of the garbled crap...and true I shouldn't be complaining with unsw an option, I just like the idea of not having to do a year more, especially after a gap year haha

How did you feel you went overall?
 
i just had my monash interview today too and i think i rambled SOOOO much!!! And i accidentally zoned out for a fair bit of the active listening... haha i guess you're not alone, special K
 
i felt crap after mine. the detech was really hard, i kept stuttering, i misinterpreted a few questions and i'm deluding myself into thinking that rambling gives you more character than just..answering the question.

special K, i know what you mean about the gap year. 5-6 years is long enough without the 7yrs you'd have to do if you don't get monash. i also apologize for reminding you that you might have to do 7 years..

gazbo, considering there's only about 5 terms they choose from, i don't think it'd be fair if people told you what their detech terms were. and if they ask the why monash question, just..tell them what you like about monash. they just want to have a chat and know abit more about who you are, so there isn't a right/wrong answer (which i should've..realised before my interview)
 
greenie when was your interview?

and lozzy no need for apologies, I'm resting all my hope in that our combined rambling skills have somehow won over our interviewers to the light that we are more human applicants who will therefore be able to act more empathetically when broached with tough subjects ;)
