Monash Monash Medicine: General Entry Discussion

Just had a question sorry I'm not too sure which forum to use, I was lucky enough to receive a spot for monash med this year but unfortunately several of my friends were not on the same boat. I was wondering whether there are chances that they may receive subsequent offers because I have heard that many interstate students reject and that frees up spots for local VIC students does anyone know the average? Scores are 96 UCAT and high 97 atar and 85 UCAT and 99 atar with both relatively strong interviews. Thanks 😊

As for your question, I'd actually argue that those who got Monash offers are ones that are serious about going to Monash. First of all, Monash holds their interview round for interstates after local offers come out for their respective states, so those that actually ATTEND bear a financial cost of doing so with no guaranteed return while also having an offer waiting for them at home if they do have one in their home state which is very likely.

The reason why it is very likely is because Monash's cutoffs for interviews were high 99s (99.85+) and high 90th UCATs (95th+), meaning that with these scores, it would be highly unlikely that they wouldn't get local offers. Therefore those that attend Monash's interviews are probably those that would accept a Monash offer. Even if they didn't, I would wager that there would only be a handful at most (know that Monash only reserves about 30+ spots for interstate applicants out of their total of 240) which would go to the next person in line. Judging by the way you pose your friends' scores, they don't seem exceedingly high.

I'd also like to note that no one at MSO has access to Monash's internal interview data, so we can't make accurate predictions about whether they would be the next in line to receive an offer should an interstater reject their offer. As long as they attended an interview and also have not received a direct rejection letter, there is still hope. The best thing your friends can do is to move on for now because no amount of anxiety is going to change any of this. Help to keep their chins up and remind them that even if this attempt fails, there is not only graduate pathways, but also non standard pathways (however these are not in Vic) to look into should they really want to do medicine.

this isn't the place to ask this question but some staff will move it to the appropriate thread later. Would like to add that neither I nor any of my friends who attended the interstate interviews plan on rejecting our offers. Of courses, this probably won't be the case for everyone, but I'd struggle to comprehend why anyone with another offer already waiting for them AND has no intention of attending Monash would fork over a couple hundred bucks to attend an interview for fun.

There may also be the possibility that every spot that an interstate applicant rejects is given to the next interstate applicant in line, rather than a Victorian applicant, meaning there's some sort of quota going on.

Unfortunately when I attended my interview (Vic student) we were advised that offers would be sent out on 15 jan, and sometimes 4 feb with a very (very) slim chance of any more in further rounds.
Of course their may still be a chance but I would think that it is probably better your friends rule Monash out and think about other plans, that way at least an offer would be a nice surprise.

However I seriously wish your friends all the best. The admissions process is not flawless and is heavily based on luck. I’m sure they have the capacity to be great medical students and doctors.

Hey everyone,

Apparently Monash University did not give out any offers yesterday for Round 3. This hasn't occured in previous years before does anyone know why that may be - is there a possibility all offers have been filled up because it's highly unlikely because of previous years rejections?

I'm relatively sure interstate students also received their offers yet (anyone know the dead line for acceptance) and not everyone accepts so I'm extremely confused :/

Deadline for interstate students was 10th Feb 11:59 PM.

Nope unfortunately. How about you?

Interesting. Do you have any concrete proof or evidence (not anecdotal stuff) of this being the case? I reckon we may be on the same boat :/

Hey, sorry for the late response.

I did in fact luckily receive an offer during the first round of offers. This was just an enquiry for a few close friends of mine and people I know. I do in fact have concrete proof through several phone calls to Monash University. What they have said is that they recently had their third batch of offers go out (Round 3) and it is very likely that on Monday and possibly in the future there will still be offers to come.

I also know that these possible rounds denote a small intake and that chances are very slim but I will always try and maintain a sentiment of hope and I encourage you to do so too. No matter what occurs in the future, I wish you the best of luck and no you aren't a 'failureatlife' like your username - adopt a positive mindset and I'm sure everything will pan out smoothly :)

Hey guys hoping someone can help me here, if I've done a bachelor course at monash uni and I'm interested in applying for monash med, will they assess me purely on my GPA, or a combination of GPA + UCAT, or will they also look at my past ATAR? Do I have to do the UCAT even as a postgrad for applying? Sorry if this is a dumb q if anyone can let me know plzzzz thanks in advance!

I think you have to have done one of three specific degrees (BPhysio, BPharm, BBioMed). What degree did you do?

Unfortunately I think you have to cross out this option. The minimum eligibility is 70 WAM but due to competitive selection you need iirc 75 or close to 80 to get an interview. Your GPA 5.3 doesn't look promising.

Not to mention, if the OP interviewed at Monash as a school leaver, am I right in thinking they don’t re-interview? They use the same interview score? And if that wasn’t enough first time around, coupled with a low WAM, it would be tricky.
