Non-standard Medicine Entry

Do they not consider the difference between a 6.5 and a 6.8+ gpa?
We believe they use this table for GPA to ATAR conversion:
[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] Non-standard Medicine Entry

So unfortunately no - anything from 6.5-7.0 would be given the same rank.

Hi welcome to MSO. Unfortunately your ATAR 97.0 will make UNSW very difficult. We believe a 6.5+ GPA will be given 99.5 however after combining with 97.0 it's only 98.25 equivalent Rank. The last two years 98.25 would have needed 98-99th %ile to get an interview and afterwards, very low chance of a place offer.

Realistically you should focus more on WSU and JMP. Best of luck.

For UWS, If my GPA is below 6.2 (Listed on their site for 1st year undergrads), will they consider my ATAR (which is above the threshold)?

Given that the interviews are in november, when second semester most likely hasnt finished yet, wouldnt they use 1st semester gpa?
From memory the hurdle isn’t considered until after interviews have been completed, i.e. even if your GPA is below the cutoff you would still receive an interview, but if it was below the cutoff come place offers (at which time semester 2 results would likely be out) you would miss out on the place offer even if you were ranked high enough to receive the offer.

ETA: IIRC it’s actually JMP that does this - I’m not positive if it’s the same for WSU. (Added by LMG! : general - but unconfirmed - consensus is that WSU do the same thing as JMP. Interviews are based ONLY on UMAT, well, now UCAT results, and GPA isn't factored in until offer stage once all results are known.)

How hard do you think it will be to achieve and maintain a GPA 6.5 in a bachelor of pharmacy with honours.
Kind regards

Hi, I am a Pharmacist looking at doing post grad med so I can probably help answer this question for you. I think Pharmacy is a fantastic option for a backup plan because it sets you up really well for if you do get into medical school but also provides you with a profession and a good career if you don't while still being in the medical field. As for whether it's easy to maintain a good GPA the short answer is definitely not. The degree is difficult, you will have to work your butt off to maintain a good GPA. Which is where my predicament is, I am from NZ and my GPA ended up being a 7.3 (I had 1 bad year where I had no motivation which caused my GPA to plummet). It's like a solid A-. I am finding it difficult to get into NZ unis because they concentrate so much on the GPA. Otago has no interview, only GPA and threshold UMAT (now UCAT). While Auckland has an MMI, but my GPA still isn't good enough to compete, I got my results from the MMI and was pretty much told I did really well in the MMI but my GPA wasn't good enough compared to the others applying and average was 8.1. This is why I am wanting to apply for the Australian Universities because I know that for some they focus more on your interview and GAMSAT than your GPA. Plus Deakin Uni takes into account previous work as a healthcare professional such as being a Pharmacist.

Please note that I did my degree in NZ but we have good relations with some of the Australian student pharmacy bodies so I still know how much work and effort goes into the degree in Australia.

Is WAM and GPA calculated by considering individual marks or just the grade. E.g. if I take 2 courses and get 84 (D) and 86 (HD), will my WAM/GPA be an 85 (HD) average or will they take the D and HD separately (and consider the gap between these 2 grades to be larger than what it was in reality).

The D and the HD would be considered separately for GPA. The WAM would be 85, the GPA would be 6.5.

Hi guys I have completed my medical science degree with a GPA of 6.20 and i wish to do medicine. Grad med or undergrad is fine with me so i have sat the gamsat 2x now but i havent done too well in it. I am thinking if i should sit the UCAT as well.

Which UCAT uni's apart from JMP accept people with a bachelors degree? and how many spots would there be for people like me?

Pretty sure that WSU, JMP and JCU are the only unis that accept non-standards. Adelaide and UTAS only consider their own students.
Around 25-40 spots are allocated for non-standards at WSU and JCU heavily emphasises on rural applicants. JMP on other hand intakes the most non-standards, close to 120 applicants.

Adding to MedDream2020's reply. Apart from these 3 schools JMP WSU JCU you are also eligible for Curtin, and UNSW if your ATAR was 98+ (the higher the more competitive).

JMP WSU UNSW have no separate quotas for non-standard, you are in the same pool as for school leavers. JCU allocates 15-20 places (out of 150) to non-standards, Curtin only 7 or 8 places.

In addition to the two above replies, you're also eligible for Bond, if that is a financially viable option for you.

Hi,

Does anyone know if UWS allows non standards (people with a completed degree) to use their ATAR instead of GPA?

Thank you!

UWS does not look at your ATAR just your gpa. However gpa is weighed, so a higher gpa puts you at a comfortable spot (6+ gpa). Moreover, you require to sit UCAT and have to do relatively well to be considered for an interview offer. I'm pretty sure that you will need around 93-94 percentile in the UCAT to be competitive.

Hey thanks for you reply. I thought UWS used gpa as a hurdle ?

Yeah, the above reply to your question is not accurate at all (as far as we are aware after collecting many years of data).

WSU will use whichever is higher out of your GPA and your ATAR up until the point you graduate (or finish three years FTE), at which point they will no longer accept ATAR and only use GPA. GPA is a hurdle requirement (as it is at JMP), and there are different hurdles depending on how long you’ve been studying and what degree type you’re enrolled in.

Thanks a lot for clarifying.

Hi,

Is it worth sitting the UCAT if you don’t have an Atar but you have a completed undergraduate degree?

Thanks Nicole.
Yes, you’ll be eligible for JMP, WSU (provided you meet their GPA hurdles), Curtin (provided you have a competitive GPA), Bond and possibly JCU (provided your university studies have allowed you to meet their Maths and Chemistry prerequisites).

Does anyone know how a UTAS GPA is translated for other unis. UTAS only requires 60% for Credit and 70% for Distinction (as opposed to 65 & 75% at other unis). I asked UAC and they were no help, other than telling me I could pay a fee to get my GPA after they'd calculated it. I want to know if they look at grades and give you a new GPA or simply carry over the GPA given by UTAS.
