Non-standard Medicine Entry

Hi,

Does the years in which you lived rurally matter? I lived in a place that was classified as rural when I lived there, however has since become RA2, down from RA3. Will all schools only accept rurality if still in RA3, or does the fact that I lived there when it was considered RA3 play a part?

EDITED: Meant to be RA2 down to RA1.

Non-standard applicants can apply to JMP, WSU, UNSW, Bond and JCU (and maybe Curtin if you've completed your degree).

RA2 is considered rural for JMP and WSU so it won't matter for those locations. Some RA2 locations are still considered rural for UNSW and Curtin (they don't use RA, they use MMM), so it may not matter for there, either. Check your MMM ranking.

RA3 would be a slight benefit for JCU over RA2, so may be worth a phone call to them if you're intending to apply. And for Bond, rural location is irrelevant.

EDITED: just saw your correction. That changes things. I'd contact JCU, JMP and WSU directly. And check MMM for Curtin and UNSW.

I moved into where I am right now in April of 2013, when it was classed as RA2, now it is classed as RA1 and is literally on the border/the last street to be classed as RA1, does this render my rurality completely useless?

As I already replied, I would be contacting the universities directly. When did the re-classification occur?

Hi, sorry if this question has been asked before. But I remember seeing a version of Ali table for non-standard applicants stating that to maintain a 99.3 atar, 3 HD's and 5D's are required. However, is it safe to assume this is not the case as it is not present in the table anymore?

I haven't heard of that conversion before. Where did you see it?

We believe UAC use this conversion system:

Different universities use different GPA to ATAR conversion systems, so it would depend where you are applying and what course(s) you are applying for.

If you scroll up 6 posts from your own, you’ll find the answer for where non-standard applicants can apply.

IIRC that advice was from Mr Boothey at Unsw. In the table Crow referred to above GPA 6.5+ is equivalent to 99.5 so Mr Boothey may have estimated 3HDs+5Ds = 6.375 would be 99.3. After seeing the table showing 6.30-6.39 is given only 98 I removed that info from the Criteria table.

I don't have ATAR, my current GPA for uni is 9

You are at UNSW so you must have an ATAR equivalent somewhere.
Your current GPA is surely not 9, only goes up to 7 I think.

There are lots of criteria in consideration so be fair to us. You shouldn't ask a question without giving us your background info to work with.

Once percentile curves for UCAT have been released, we will be accepting "what are my chances of an interview" questions from MSO members in this thread ONLY:

Requests made between now and then, or posted in other areas of the forum, will be moderated/deleted.

Thank you :D

Hey
I’m currently studying first year health science at the university of Otago. I was wondering if anyone knew if it were possible for me to apply to undergraduate medicine or dental programs in Australian universities.

If so, which universities could I potentially apply to and the requirements for those.

Thanks 🙏

For medicine, you can apply to any university that accepts non-standard applicants. A (very quick) scroll through this thread will give you which universities this includes.

For dentistry, I believe you can apply to UQ, Griffith, CSU, UAdel, LaTrobe, and JCU. 2017-18 Dent schools Selection Criteria Y12s & Non-standards

Hi,
I have an unusual situation in that my degree was completed more than 10 years ago so therefore not eligible for WSU however my ATAR was 99.2. Would I be able to be considered on the basis of my ATAR again seeing as my degree no longer qualifies? It seems unfair that if I had never done any tertiary study my ATAR would still be eligible even after more than 10 years as there is no expiry but after doing 2 degrees it would no longer count. I am wanting to apply to WSU primarily.

I searched but didn't see the 10 year rule mentioned anywhere by WSU. Unless you have been told so by them I am inclined to think you are eligible if your GPA meets the threshold. Best of luck.

Hi Osteokate, I was also under the impression that the 10 year rule does not apply to WSU as I am in the same boat. Have they told you specifically that your degrees( bachelors?) no longer qualify? I have a bachelors and a PG Cert (more recent) and I have received a slightly different answer each time. Keen to know what you find out.
