Non-standard Medicine Entry

As I'm a tertiary student in first year uni, and completed the HSC last year, I was just wondering whether I can still apply to all the medical schools, or are there a few that only accept school-leavers (Read somewhere about Griffith & Qld). And if I could, how would my academics be weighted? do they take my WAM/GPA + atar + UCAT? Thanks in advance!

If you’ve commenced tertiary study then you’ll be eligible for JMP, WSU, UNSW, JCU and Bond.

JMP will base interview invites off UCAT score and place offers off interview score. You’ll need to meet a hurdle requirement for your GPA if you’re eligible for a place offer.

WSU will base interview invites off UCAT score, then place offers off 75% interview and 25% UCAT score. If you’re eligible for a place they’ll look at either your ATAR or GPA (either can be used) as a hurdle requirement only.

UNSW will combine your ATAR and GPA into a single academic score, then combine this score with UCAT score to determine interview invites.

JCU will consider your GPA and written application for interview eligibility.

Bond will use a combination of your GPA and ATAR (from memory - maybe it’s GPA only once you’ve completed a full year of study) to determine eligibility for psychometric testing.

Hello
Thank you for creating this discussion thread. I am currently doing Commerce in Monash but contemplating doing medicine at some stage. Can anyone suggest what sort of pathway i am eligible to take please ?

If you finish your commerce degree you can use either the UCAT —> non-standard undergrad Med route or the GAMSAT —> graduate entry Med route.

If you don’t finish, then only the UCAT —> non-standard undergrad Med route. JCU and Bond would also be available to you, they are non-standard entry but no UCAT requirement.

Thanks LMG . If i finish my commerce degree can you tell me which other unis I am eligible to apply to please (apart from JCU and Bond)

If you sit GAMSAT, all of the graduate entry unis (look up GEMSAS unis) + Flinders + USyd + the non-standard entry accepting universities (JMP, WSU, UNSW, Bond, JCU and Curtin once you have a complete degree).

What would classify as a 'competitive' GPA for JCU through the non-standard entry pathway considering an average interview and average-decent application (non-rural btw)?

This is incredibly difficult to answer - what is an “average-decent” application and who has decided that? Non-rural individuals have received interviews and place offers with GPAs in the 6+ range. Anyone who receives an offer is likely to have a very high quality written application and outstanding interview.

Another way to guesstimate this is JCU has indicated they interview around 700 for the 150 place offers, so 1 in 5 on average. With an average interview among the intv cohort I think you'd need a near top GPA to combine to a top fifth ranking.

That doesn't mean a 6.5 will have little chance. A 6.5 needs to do a much better than average interview for that final ranking.

Hi team MSO, not sure where is the best place to post this question, been reading across the different forums and getting bits and pieces of info but still confused as. Can someone kindly inform or point me in the right direction for some information regarding to a very non-standard entry?

I have graduated from my Masters of Architecture degree (including a mandatory bachelor's degree in environmental science) about 7 years ago and have been working since. I'm hoping to apply for undergrad med/dent entry for 2020, I have no idea what my GPA was, does anyone know whether that will be used for consideration of entry ?? as it's been almost 7 years since I graduated... Also just to make sure I've done the right research and have not missed out on any potential unis to apply for, which unis in Australia am i eligible to apply for Dentistry and Med?

Cheers! Much appreciated! :D

Quick question, did you sit UCAT? If not, the only Med unis open to you will be JCU (minimal places for non-standard applicants), and Bond (private, full fee). And yes, your GPA will be used for entry so it’d be useful to get an idea what it is.

Cheers for that! Yes I did sit the Ucat 2019. I've have compiled a little list so far but just wanted to see if there are any I've missed out. Thanks heaps!

In that case, you can apply to:

UNSW
JMP
WSU
JCU
Curtin
Bond

and, from next year by the looks of things, possibly UTAS

For Dent:

UAdel
CSU
LaTrobe
Griffith
UQ
JCU

Hi, I'm doing first year biomed at UoA this year and am planning to apply to AUS med. Our GPA system goes up to 9.0, so how would that translate to AUS unis? What would be the minimum GPA for UNSW, JMP and WSU? Thanks

UNSW GPA requirement relies on UCAT score, but generally you’d want 6.50/7.00+. JMP and WSU have hurdle requirements of ~4.3 for JMP and it depends how far through the degree you are for WSU but around 6.00.

UAC will do the conversion when you apply, if you want to figure it out yourself you’ll need to calculate it. I have no idea how.

Howdy, I'm applying for internal transfer at Adelaide Uni from a BHMS to med and had a couple of queries.
Due to commitments at work, I haven't been able to study since last year. Does that matter?
Does 0.75FTE compare poorly to ⩾1.0?
Also, my TER (ATAR for you younger folks) was awful. Will that prove exclusionary despite the fact that it's "not considered"?

Hi guys,
I've recently started applying via UAC through non-standard entry and just wondering if the preference you choose on UAC affect your chances also getting into a particular medicine/dentistry school? Also I'm wondering if I can apply for more than 3 schools since the website seems to only allow me to choose 3?
