Otago Halls of Residence

Hey guys,
I went on StarRez Portal to see my application online (for accommodation) and it said current status: transfer and category: carrington. What does this mean?
Thanks

Hi Juna!!
That means that your application is on it's way to Carrington (it could even possibly be there right now and they're just reading it over- which accommodation told me about my app for Salmond a few months ago).
After a few days (took about a week for me) the status should change to "accepted" and if not, it'll be sent onto the next college on your preference list.

For those of you still on the GWL for halls, my cousin got an offer for Carrington this morning, so there are still places coming, don't lose hope!

Carrington on the waitlist? Isn't that one of the highly-sought-after ones?

Carrington is highly sought after, but they'll still have students pulling out (going to other unis, etc...), so there are spaces for offers off the waitlist to students with very good applications.

Hey guys, so I will be staying at Carrington, but have opted to go for the shared room option (purely due to financial reasons). Does anybody have experience of doing this, or know anybody who did this? I hope that it works out well, but I'm trying to go in with both my eyes open because sharing a room with another person may be difficult (I'm sure it's different to sharing a room with a younger sister). I don't want to be too optimistic and think that it will be all good, because, well, it may not be. It's kind of too late for me to back out now, but some information will be good.
Thanks!

I'm asking on behalf of my friend (who isn't on MSO).

She applied late (i.e after externals last year) and her application is currently at Cumberland (I'm not sure whether or not that's the Court or College) and StaRez Portal says that it's "pending a decision" from the head of the College.
What are her chances of getting into Cumberland? I mean, they take 511ish students so that can't be completely full, right?

I'm a bit worried for her since she's flying to Dunedin a day after the weekend that most residents arrive.

crucible1317, I'm staying in Cumberland, and there are a couple of empty rooms on the 4th floor (which looks like it might be the HSFY floor). The head has warned the Cumby facebook group that room allocations may change right up to the day. I have no idea about how many applications they consider, but the rooms still to be filled is a good sign.

Hi Shaunasaur :)
That's awesome news!! She'll be really happy to hear that since she's been freaking out. And you guys have a facebook group?- sounds brilliant!
Ahaha, and also, Cumberland looks so nice! I sort of wish I'd've chosen my top 3 preferences properly now hahah

Looks can be deceiving crucible. Cumby is great so being social tho lots of people and very active hall. I used to live in hayward so I never heard the end of them partying.

Ah, yes, of course! It's just the video seemed really lively (I guess they're all made this way haha).
:lol:Another one of my friends is staying at Hayward. He's sooo not going to be happy about that hahah

Really? why?
Its quite social, and has its own gym, location is awesome, not very study oriented but I mean taht depends on the person. The roooms *drools* so biig. its cool im sure he will come around

:p He plans to be a studious student and study a lot hahahah...I'm not sure how well that'll work out. It's always much easier said than done.
 Yeah, I've heard that rooms are the biggest out of all the Residential Colleges hahha

Just means that more people can fit in the room. Lol.

G'day guys, first time poster here. I'm HSFY at Carrington and I'm room sharing, anyone else doing this? I'm Cameron on the Facebook group, so maybe some of you have seen me on that :)

I know that unicol is supposed to be the "party hall". I was wondering though, does everyone there take their studying seriously. Are they on he scheme of "party hard, study harder"?

Hey,
I was at unicol in 2011, and the following is an extract from my blog entry after following HSFY:
It wasn't even on my preference list for residential colleges, but when I was offered a place here, I decided it would be better than flatting during first year. I'm very glad I decided this. Sure, UniCol can be pretty loud on 'drinking nights' (Thursday and Saturday in particular), but that's nothing a good pair of earplugs can't fix. The master (Chris Addington) is a real character, and keeps the place in good order, and I really respect the guy for what he does; running a college of 517 hormone-ridden teenagers cannot be an easy job, but he takes it all in his stride (as do all the staff), and the college runs really smoothly. Sure, the food isn't overly fantastic (but really, it's not that bad either, and it's definitely better than anything I could cook), but it's not exactly a deal-breaker. Overall, I've made plenty of great friends here, and I'm really glad I got put here. It is a college that promotes a really healthy balance between grades and social life (although you have to be very careful as a health-sci to keep the grades side of that balance higher than the social life side....), and I feel that being placed in UniCol (as opposed to my first-choice colleges St. Margaret's and Carrington) has actually been a good thing for me (read: I'm not ripping on those two colleges, I'm sure they're great. However, for me, UniCol helped me to not be too much of 'that' health-sci). I'll end this section with this: If you get offered a place in UniCol, take it. There are definitely worse places you could be staying in first year.
To be honest, no, most people at unicol don't take their studies all that seriously. But that won't stop you from taking yours seriously :)

LOL that's wishful thinking. Remember Unicol doesn't have that many health scis, which is one of the few cohorts where people get very serious about studying.

You'll find that in general (and of course health sci can be an exception) people are very relaxed about their courses, and it's more about the whole student experience. You'll also find some that are honestly just there to party hard.
