Otago Halls of Residence

THanks for the help again bobby. That is along the lines of what I've been hearing, maybe I will consider waiting until the start of the year to search.

Hey guys, I have been put on the general waitlist, but haven't heard from them yet. Should I start getting worried?
Also, my online application says that it is missing confidential reference form, which I filled out, and gave it to my principle to also fill it out. I also confirmed with our school pa, and she said that she has sent it. But Otago haven't received it.... Maybe that's why I've missed out? Because I've had excellence endorsed for all three years of NCEA, and was prefect, etc, and don't understand why I missed out... Err, I'm freaking out... Is there any hope? At the moment, I would take any place, if it was offered to me. I thought about flatting, but don't really want to.... Please, help! I tried emailing the accommodation email, but my email won't get through... :(
Thanks

Why don't you ring the accommodation office? Nothing wrong with being direct, and it does sound like there might have been a genuine miscommunication.

Is theft of personal items a big issue at Residential Colleges?

I know we're told to name practically everything we bring with us but for laundry when we hang out our clothes have pieces of clothing gone missing before?

None of those have ever been issues in my experience. It'd be kind of hard to get away with stealing clothes from someone you live with, for starters.

Awesome then! Yeah, I thought about it from that angle- where they'd get snapped pretty quickly if they did steal clothes/belongings- but better safe than sorry.
Thanks!!

You won't lose things left, right and centre. The odd case of socks disappearing does happen but not often enough to worry anyone.

In general you'd want to label your items if you're living with that many people.

I've always had a tail rail in my room just in case.

Random question, does anyone have any idea of the type of bedding provided by Salmond College? Like how thick the duvet is, how many pillows are provided, etc..? Oh, also...do I have to provide my own wire/cable for internet or is that provided :D?

No idea re:bedding at Salmond, but I'd imagine it's roughly the same as it was at unicol, in which case you'll be bringing your own duvet, and they'll provide one pillow. They should have given you a list of what you'll get/need to get by now though, surely?
And most colleges have wireless internet, and, to the best of my knowledge, the ones that don't give you cables.

Um, might not be so. At my hall (one of the smaller ones) we were given 2x duvets + pillow. In which case the only thing I'd bring down is a duvet cover/slip-thingys.

And nope, warmth was never an issue within the hall-- so duvets were adequate where I lived Jaficionada.

Oh right. In that case, just have a good read over all the paperwork they send you, it's bound to say it in there somewhere.

Hey guys,
With NCEA results out, has anybody (who have been on wait list for halls of residence) received an offer?
When I rang accommodation services, they said that everyone who were on the wait list last year received an offer, but it may well be different this year with the increase in the number of students.

The waitlist wont move just because NCEA results are out... The only reason places will open up off the waitlist is if people decline offers (ie: they choose to study somewhere else/not stay at a hall), so I'd say at this stage places will just open up as people make up their minds as to what they're doing this year. But yes, by the sounds of things pretty much everyone on the waitlist gets into a hall (even if it isn't the one they were after).

papermoth & froot, Thanks you two :D I actually haven't received any further information from them after the forms which they sent me in October? concerning the deposit and stuff. I'll carefully go over it :D

It may have come with a handbook with most things you need to know. And no, colleges aren't known to send you anything after the forms package (contract, welcoming letter, handbook etc). Some colleges may have a copy of the documentation on their websites.

Dug up the stuff they sent me and reread it carefully. It was listed on the General Information & Conditions of Residence Paper. My bad :o They do ask residents to bring a study lamp although bignose states that he/she received one . Perhaps they changed it during these couple of years :/
Yes Salmond gives you a lamp, i was there last year.

I was just referring to the fact that some students who were initially going to attend, with NCEA results out, may find that they have not gained UE, and therefore, may have dropped out.... I don't know, this is what the accommodation office said.

I don't think that'll be a large number - colleges look for a number of things, but it would be presumable that among them is decent academics (given that the reference form requires entering of past results), and high or decent achieving students (the kind colleges choose in first round offers) don't just casually fail to gain UE... But I guess there would inevitably be a few that do have to drop out due to UE, just don't count on it as a means to move the waitlist along beyond a few people.

Salmond does provide duvets and pillows. One of each.

To the best of my knowledge...
