Otago Halls of Residence

@Zion just in regards to "the ball" comment it was more in reference to a previous poster who seemed obsessed and freaking out on which colleges have balls and if she would have to go. Just imo a minor thing. @Ning Thanks!:D

@frootloop the whole time i was writing the above^ comment i was thinking the same thing haha

Are you talking about Nimbus2000?

@musica209 yep, thats the one.

If anyone on the waitlist recieves an offer could you leave a post. good luck

Sorry for spamming this forum but I just received a notification that my application has been transferred to toroa, so I might possibly receive an offer from them. I'm not feeling particularly positive about toroa and am thinking about declining and seeing if I can get into another hall as its early days, and if worst comes to worst and I don't receive another offer flatting seems very similar to toroa Any thoughts on toroa? And is it one offer at a time per person ? Thanks !

Well since you're after the likes of unicol (rather than the likes of St Margs, Carrington, Knox, Arana, Selwyn etc), the chances aren't so bad. Do note that you're not guaranteed an offer though, and I have no idea how likely it is that you'll get an offer.

If you do get an offer, I'm under the impression all the ones you can get offers from are at least of similar calibre to unicol? I mean, other than the popular ones named above, I'm under this weird impression that all the colleges are basically alike (minus Toroa)...

@cripwalker
So, froot and I observed a little clipboard labelled "Cumberland and Toroa Meal Plan" while getting food from the University Union Foodcourt (yes, link provided so you can check it out), confirming my vague recollection that they have meal plans with them - so yes, Toroa will feed you (at extra cost), but you'll have to eat at the Union building (attached to the Central Library) which is about as far from St David (main health sci lecture theatre) as Toroa itself, about as far as Castle/Archway (the other health sci lecture theatres). I guess the upside is that you'll get to conveniently go study in central library afterwards?

(And no, Cumberland college itself is catered, Cumberland Courts though, is not, but they're closer to the union building than Toroa. I think the conclusion here is that Cumberland courts is a bit like Toroa except even closer to the health sci region of the campus.)

A little history: Toroa used to be the international student place, and although it is now open to all students, my observation from tutoring there is that there's still plenty of international students; if your reasoning for choosing unicol is the, uhhh, shall we say 'social atmosphere', I'm under the impression that you'll find Toroa a bit disappointing.

EDIT: By 'social atmosphere' I mean 'rowdiness', I was being PC, but froot said 'rowdiness' is an accepted term among most unicol kids (such as himself).

gowerle, you should probably refer to this post. It's fairly recent and @cripwalker is in the same situation as you, so maybe you could chit-chat about it.

And also, if you really have read through the 80 or so pages, there's quite a bit of advice against turning down offers etc., so you could see that and weigh out your chances :)

I'm curious to know when and where is the best time to get textbooks for HSFY for lowest price? Mainly after the best possible bargain I can get. :L

Second hand! Just have a look on TradeMe. There'll be tons going in the summer holidays, and there'll be quite a few during O-week as well, people will put posters up on the notice boards outside libraries/in St Davids.

I've been accepted into Hayward (YAY huge room!) for 2013. I was just wondering when everyone arrived in previous years? Like did your hall have you arrive on one set day (for 2013- Feb 16th) or could you arrive a day earlier or later? (BTW I am waiting to find this out from Hayward as well)

I am just wondering because all my flights options to arrive to Dunedin on the Saturday take 10-13hours.

I declined Toroa a few days ago and went back onto the GWL. Then i checked the status maybe two days later and had a transfer to Salmond now. I'm thinking of declining this one too because i really want either Unicol or Cumby, and i think it will be easy enough getting into these two as i have read from previous posts that there are only 300 on the GWL this year so i have my fingers crossed.

Toroa is somewhat understandable, but think carefully before declining Salmond... It's a perfectly good college (a bit further than the rest but not that far), and just weigh up your options - you don't know if spots will open up at Unicol or Cumby, and if you keep declining you may end up having to find a flat... Of course, if the only two acceptable outcomes for you are Unicol/Cumby or flatting, then go right ahead (although I'd say that'd be a fairly misguided choice)...

@cripwalker
I agree with @Cathay that Salmond actually looks pretty good and from what i know Unicol has been really popular this year. So way up your choices carefully. I wouldn't mind your spot at Salmond though:), The head of Toroa was a Really, really nice guy. Hope to hear from something soon, congrats on your possible offer of Salmond though and @angelw for your offer from Hayward!

Slightly offtopic.

My sister got into unicol literally a week or two before class started. And unicol sometimes even sends out emails saying there's free spaces a few weeks beforehand. It's so strange how people aren't getting into unicol this year! (aside from you, cripwalker) Have the rules changed about unicol not being allowed to decline people? [/offtopic]
I was just reading through this thread (Yep, I'm that bored), and noticed this. I think it's important to note that even if UniCol 'isn't allowed to reject people', I would like to point out that UniCol's capacity is not limitless. If there are 517 people already enrolled in UniCol (I'm pretty sure this is the number of rooms, but that's beside the point), then they can hardly give out more offers.
I would say it's more that UniCol 'Has to accept people to the point at which it is full'. And it's entirely possible that UniCol has offered to capacity. That isn't to say that places won't open up if people reject their UniCol offers.

cripwalker , so what did you end up doing with the Salmond transfer/offer? Went through the website last night and looks really good. Better than regretting the decision and possibly not getting a hall at all come febuary.

Still undecided. Not being to quick in my decision this time, really wanting to make sure of my decision. I like the look of Salmond and surely the amount of time it takes to get to Uni shouldn't stop me from accepting. Just dont want to regret anything.

cripwalker are you male or female? honestly i think you should do what you feel is best for you and the chances of getting into anotther hall ( 100 people on the waitlist) is very good. It just might not be the one you want. do what feels best. Let me know:lol:

If I was you, I'd accept this offer. Personally I think Salmond is a pretty decent Hall to live in. I don't know about you but I really don't mind distances, they are good for exercising. However I agree that you should think about this carefully because I know how it feels when you regret a wrong choice you made in the past. Good luck.

I have a friend who went to Salmond, and she absolutely loves it there :) Walking to class was never an issue for her (though, she was a fairly determined character, so maybe that's why).

Hi, does anyone know what studholme is like? Would it be good option for someone doing first year health sciences? Many thanks!
