Otago Halls of Residence

Hi @Shaunasaur, thanks a bunch for the help! How is the atmosphere at Cumberland Court and Cumberland College? And does Cumberland College and Cumberland Court have the same or separate tutorials?

I lived in Cumberland College this year. The Courts are essentially flats, so 3-4 rooms with a common area in the middle. The Courts kids come to Cumberland College for lunches only, and dinners weren't too far away on the uni campus.
Essentially the Health Sci Courts residents have to walk the same distance as the College residents. If you plan your day right you can usually get away with one or two walks to campus from the college, where if you live at the courts you have a definite walk to the college for lunch every day (including weekends). Oh, and some courts houses ended up with two people living in them, and I think one actually only had one person living in it. So it's a bit risky.
Another thing to keep in mind is that there is an additional startup fee living at the courts for the internet - I can't remember how much it is, but every bit counts when you've only just moved to Dunedin. Personally I'd go for College. If you sign up for it as a health sci, you're likely to be in the older part of the college just cause there's so many of you, but the facilities are all the same and the rooms aren't all too different. And if you're on third or fourth floor you get access to a sweet balcony.

If you have any more questions about Cumby, just tag me in a post and I'm more than happy to answer them for ya.

Oh I also wanted to clarify what you meant by "some courts houses ended up with two people living in them, and I think one actually only had one person living in it. So it's a bit risky". Do you mean that some Cumberland Court flats, which are meant for 3 or 4 people, only had 1 or 2 occupants?

Hello, I would like to ask about Cumberland Court and Cumberland College. Does Cumberland Court have single bedrooms or shared bedrooms? I understand that both are fully catered. The location of the Court is very convenient, but I am thinking that the College might have a better hall life? Thanks!

Hey Nightstar, I lived in the Cumby Courts for a summer. There's many pros/cons to being there:

PROS:
- Distance to most HSFY Lectures & Labs & Science Library is <1 min
- Big rooms, Double sized beds! Great for studying.
- Own Kitchen (share with up to 5 others)
- Breakfast supplied to your flat
- Parties are great (if your flatmates are up for it too)

CONS:
- Completely unknown who your flatmates will be
- Have to walk 5 minutes to dinners/lunches (sucks if it's raining)
- Although the College tries to integrate you into the COllege community, you do miss out as the best part of College life is all those random things that happen off the cuff

Either option is good, but for me personally I'd go the main College (especially if you want an Otago experience in addition to good results).

Cheers
Steve

Yep, a few people dropped out for second semester and weren't replaced. Looking through the year book there was a few flats with just two people in them by the end of it all.

Hi stevo140 and Shaunasaur, thanks a lot for replying and answering my questions about Cumberland College and Cumberland Court! It is really helpful of you guys :)

Well there will be spot for a person at Salmond College with toilet and shower as I got into my course at Auckand. Everyone going down looking forward to O- Week?

hey guys is it true that cumberland college haunted???

Yes... Very true, it's haunted... WITH FUN!

[box=srs opening box] But srs, it's haunted, I mean there's no other explanation for this article or others like them. It's not like there's hundreds of teenagers around looking to pull pranks right? [/box]

Living there last year, I can definitely say I saw no ghosts. Although walking the halls after playing Slender is a bad, bad idea.

Hey everybody, i was just wondering what are the rooms like at st mags, and is there anything that is not said anywhere that i should bring?
Cheers.
