Otago Halls of Residence

GUYS! I GOT AN OFFER FROM CARRINGTON!!! :D

Edit I: Ooh, it automatically changes all caps into lower case. Cool.
Edit II: Nevermind, beat the system.

Hi all,

First off I'm not a med student (going to do law/arts or law/commerce), but just wanted to say thank you for the sheer volume of information on this thread. Not knowing anybody who is going to/has been to Otago made it fairly hard in choosing hall of residence preferences. After a fair bit of searching I think it is fair to say that this is the best resource on the net. :D

I made it with my second pick into Knox.:lols:

I did have a question with regards to the formal dress code. Simply how extensive of a formal wardrobe are we looking at, multiple suits etc? How much money do I go off and spend? I feel a bit stupid asking this yet charging off into uni life is a big unknown.

Anything else that would be helpful to know?

Cheers for any advice in general you can provide and hope to see a few of you down there.

Hi there
Personally, I have two jackets; one from an opshop and another 'nicer' one from hallensteins, which I think was no more than $80. I also have a couple of ties, and a pair of dress pants and dress shoes, and that's all I've needed for the dinners and balls etc. How extensive you want it to be is up to you.

Also, have you joined the facebook page?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I haven't joined the Facebook page yet, am on a sort of personal hiatus from it at the moment due to some fairly extensive work commitments. I'll be sure to get on there in the coming weeks.

In terms of clothing, what you have suggested is what I was looking at so that's good news.

Also, when is the barbecue (Auckland one) mentioned in the letter likely to be? Again with work I will need a fair bit of notice.

Congratulations!!!

To expand on Rusty's post. Hallensteins has a suit deal for $200 I think which should probably cover you for the suit, tie and shirt.
I'm not in Knox, and don't know what the dress is like there, but black suits are generally considered very formal and used for weddings, funerals and proms. Charcoal, Grey and Navy Blue are nice.

If you're an Aucklander walk through K Road over Christmas to try find some blazers, or pick up a nice one if you can afford it. Navy Blue seems popular.

You can also get ties from Hallensteins. I swear they have a sale every week! There'll definitely be one over Christmas, and you can do a lot of damage with minimal spending.
If you get some chinos (which aren't too tight fitted) you could use those as semi-formal pants as well, and Hallensteins is really good with shirts - much cheaper than Barkers, Country Road, etc. and decent quality for the price.

That being said, if you're in the position to then definitely check out other stores - Barkers, Country Road, etc. have some really nice shirts and ties and they do have relatively frequent sales, although they're much more expensive.

Again thank you for the replies. Will have to head into town at some point. :D

Yeah, possibly see you there Squiddy! :D

Am I meant to receive confirmation from Carrington once they've received my acceptance forms?

Also, will be heading down to Dunnerz at some point these holidays.
Plan on looking around the University Campus as well as (the outside of) Carrington.
Is there anywhere you'd recommend I check out? Try and sell Dunedin to me!!! :D

Really indecisive about the whole Otago vs. Auckland thing. Both have different draws. :L

Some Colleges don't send acceptance confirmations immediately. They're more likely to contact you if they HAVEN"T received it :)

It's not really sites and things-to-do that make Otago awesome. It's the atmosphere - the Otago experience. Nothing compares to it. By far the best Colleges in New Zealand. And the best Med School ;)
But if you are coming down, you could check out the following:
- Baldwin St
- Signal Hill
- Central Library (on campus)
- Anatomy Museum
- A beach or two (tunnel beach, sandfly bay, aramoana, st clair etc...)

Yeah, possibly see you there Squiddy! :D

I received an email a few weeks later saying that they had received the application. Also if you log in to the accommodation thing, it says that the status is 'application confirmed' (i think)

Otago has great student atmosphere as the above person said. You really feel apart of the community etc. I have no clue how Auckland is like that, but I can imagine it's probably not as great as Otago!! Note that Dunedin is pretty dead during summer, so what you experience then is a fair bit different from what it's like during semester time.

Another thing is that presumably you would be getting away from your family by going to Otago, which IMO is a pretty good thing - independence, growth and all those good things!

Hi, I got into UniCol, and was just wondering when we had to go down, there?(I live in Auckland)
Do we have to be there in person for course approval, and also would the Residential colleges be open by the time Course approval starts?

When I got into Hayward, they asked for us to specifically arrive at the beginning of O week, the weekend before/during course approval.
Seeing as course approval is Friday, 15 February - Tuesday, 19 February this year, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that your college is probably going to ask you to come on the weekend of the 16-17th.
Don't worry though! They will sent you a massive and exciting infomation pack detailing everything for you.

To the future Carringtonians :D

I'm going to carrington this year. Would it be a good move to take my own printer down as I will most likely print a LOT of paper. Or are the facilities at the hall good/cheap enough ?
