Otago Halls of Residence

Oh, so it's common knowledge around there?
There were a few people who had older siblings pass through who weren't accepted. Apparently it may have something to do with past students?

Anyway, it was mentioned by out headmaster today (he named Knox), and apparently they're looking into it / finding out what went wrong...

There are quite a few King's people down here this year so something like this would be known by the whole College in no time. And yes, that's true, and there's a high chance that it had something to do with past students, or at least that's what most of us are assuming (what rusty said is probably true as well, but then again, a certain Exec's sibling who is from King's College got turned down while a sibling of another second year who is not from King's College got in so I wonder why. It could simply be that the latter's application was a much better one).

I would love to know what your headmaster finds out though :)

Anyway how's your application going? Have you heard from any hall?

Zion, I swear i know you but i dont know your name. I just have a feeling who you are. I know you did schol chem, physics and calc because i remember from the sessions.

Knox has a new Master (Selwyn Yeoman) who hadn't arrived when 2013 acceptances were processed.

Therefore this is his first year choosing residents for Knox. All the traditions around Knox's selection process are out the window, this is a guy who's gonna do things differently. He doesn't give a rat's arse if you have siblings who went there as he's trying to change the culture. Expect a much more reserved and "drink less" student body at Knox in 2014.

I wouldn't bother trying to appeal or find out why you didn't get in. Suck it up and accept the offer from whoever else has offered you.

I got accepted into Knox for next year. I'm really looking forward to next year now because I know many people who didn't get their first choice, plus many who didn't get their second or third choices either.

Thanks for that. Are you still residing there or have you moved on to the big bad world of flatting? I'd love to know about your personal experiences with the college, so far I've really only heard positive things about it. I was the only person to apply to Knox from my school which surprised me a bit, a couple of my friends are going to Arana. Are the two colleges relatively similar? My group of friends has seemed to gravitate towards Arana as a collective.

Finally, someone's going to Knox. The reason that you've only heard positive things about Knox is because we make sure they are the only things that you hear about Knox

Well that sounds totally unbiased! But I'm sure it's probably true regardless of your bias.. We seem to be a rarity this year, I'm struggling to find anyone I know who has been accepted into Knox. Are you still residing there or have you moved on? ^_^

I'm glad you are looking forward to next year :) There are people who didn't like Knox at at all before they came, but they ended up enjoying it so I hope you will feel the same way. Don't worry if you don't know anyone who's going to Knox next year, and this is to all other people of other halls as well, you WILL fit in and make many friends in no time, as long as you put in a little effort.

And to answer your question, both me and rusty are returning next year so I guess we'll see you there ^_^

I'm there this year, and will be there next year too.
Primarily, Knox is a place to live, like any hall. It does have a few unique things about it however.

The main one is the number of second year students who return, which impacts a lot on what happens.
There is a formal dress code, but not too many people have a problem with that. Knox runs its own events during O-week and reO-week. It also has quite a few opportunities for sporting and cultural (mainly a competition with Selwyn), if your that way inclined. There is a first year second year mentoring system as well.

I think the major downside for people is the walk to uni- about 15 minutes- particularly on those cold Dunedin mornings.

None of my friends went to Knox, so I knew noone here. But that's ok, since a lot of people are like that, and everyone will be trying to make new friends too.

Lol, 'what went wrong'... Halls accepting students will always be a subjective process, the system worked as it should have.

Nothing - it was just unusual considering past experiences with Knox. I agree with that statement, but I also believe it's a smart move for my school to try find out if there was a particular reason behind the decision in order to help out future applicants.

I think it's also a bigger issue as there were a lot of problems with halls in Wellington. but Knox received a mention too. A few of the halls didn't accept anyone from our school - possibly due to past students, although some were saying CIE exams (which is odd).

Two King's boys were kicked out this year. Nothing 'went wrong', Knox college has every right to choose who it offers a place to and who it doesn't.

Having said that, I have it on reasonable authority that Knox has historically only had residents from a small percentage of high schools, and the university has since compelled the college to let in people from all secondary schools, giving more people a chance to get in.

And to be honest, there should be no reason for any complaints, considering those turned down by Knox aren't denied living in another hall altogether. After all, Knox is just another hall.

Didn't know about the first part. Not that it's the reason, but I personally don't believe it's right to that a couple of people can mess up everyone else's chances. Although there were a few applicants who had siblings go through Knox, so it may have possibly affected their chances.
It's good to see that they're opening their doors a bit, just a shame for some of the people applying this year.

It seems that the people who were accepted this year had lots of involvement with the Chapel / Spiritual side of things at school, which would make sense based off of what I've heard of Knox (there's a chapel there?).

I wouldn't say people are complaining - but they're definitely disappointed. Many of them were looking for the culture which Knox offered, which from what I've heard is quite unique in comparison to the other halls. I think one of the big things was traditional aspect / having second years carry it on.
Some weren't offered any of their preferences / are on the waiting list for colleges; although that's probably more due to bad applications. A few got picked up by Aquinas though!

Fair enough, although it sucks that the past students may have ruined it for the future ones though. I heard that the Exec isn't liked very much by the Master? - which may not have worked well for his brother.

To be honest don't think the headmaster will really share much or be able to change anything. But I think it might make people more wary about applying to Knox from my school in the future, especially as their first choice. Guess it needed to happen to one year group, just happened to be mine!

Haven't heard from any halls yet - still says it's at Carrington. But that's fine, I was thinking Otago earlier this year but then decided Auckland would probably be a better move for me if I'm thinking about Med. Decided to apply anyway after seeing all my friends get places in other halls (Selwyn, Arana & Carrington mainly), then realising it was stupid to rule out Otago altogether and I can think about it over the holidays.
Guess I'll wait until second round offers and I'll update you guys, but it's not a big deal if it doesn't work out for me.

I don't know... One of the guys who was accepted isn't exactly "reserved", and I know someone applied for an alcohol free dorm was declined a place. But it's possible his application wasn't the best. Anyway, will be interesting to see the change in Knox - although in all honestly I found it appealing because it was different. Making it like every other hall kills off a lot of the attraction to it.

I don't plan on asking about it if I don't make it in, especially as I sent in my application late. I think the school is interested more for the future applicants than the current ones, which is fair enough in my opinion! And yeah, most other people are accepting whatever they're offered now because they're set on Otago.

Congratulations on getting in Pootlie!

So what happens at the start of next year? We all head down with all our stuff and there's orientation and things?

Pretty much :)

Most Colleges open on the weekend 15th/16th Feb. Best to come on the Saturday as 75% of most Colleges arrive that day. Orientation Week technically begins Mon 17th Feb with prelim lectures on 21st Feb and formal lectures beginning on 24th Feb.

I want to know what flat I'm in at carrington. It's tooooooooo long to wait till the end of the year.

I'm actually really excited for Unicol next year despite I got rejeted for Smags, but its all good. HSFY student here, chose the alcohol-free floor and just discovered this forum today= =. looks like Im going to be placed in one of the HSFY flats! Was worried about making new friends down in Otago but after reading through the thread I realised many ppl are in the same shoes as me so phew I am a tad more confident now. Still a little confused about the UE because I'm under the preferential pathway and accpeted the Unicol offer so does it mean I only need 180 rank score to be able to gain admission to HSFY? If I fail to achieve 180 then what should I do?

So do we not get any more contact from the College after the acceptance email until we get down there?
You'll get a little bit more correspondence. Most Colleges send out Information Forms so they know your interests, if you want to be on an alcohol free floor/flat, single sex environment etc... I think most Colleges send these out Nov/Dec

Thats exactly what ill do in a weeks time, give the exts a best shot, but it is always good to have a Plab B in mind!
