Otago Halls of Residence

Hey, is anyone that is going to Carrington going to the orientation thing on the 11th of Feb?
I went in first year and really enjoyed it - you got to meet and make friends with a smaller facet of people before everyone arrived. You also got to avoid the awkwardness with everyone else when they arrived on the Saturday because you already knew people :)

Is anyone going to that new college, Te Rangi Hiroa? I've heard it's quite good: ensuite bathrooms, new facilities and they also have Ashley Day as the Warden; isn't that Carrington's old warden or am I mistaken? :)

I would have put Te Rangi Hiroa but I wasnt too sure about going there because it is new but I think you will have a good time. For a start you have a good warden in Ashley (according to what I have heard), then you have great facilities and great location.

Haha yeah, I guess it doesn't really matter where you go that affects whether you get into medicine or not. It's about the effort and work you put in

I'd always be a little skeptical about the first year of a College. There are always teething issues.
Yes there are ensuites but some of those ensuites aren't really ensuites, they're showers sitting in the middle of your room (they're not a separate room). The company that previously owned this building "Living Space" had a shocker with their construction with the main issue being the bathrooms.
Ashley is a very good warden but he doesn't connect with residents like some of the younger Heads of College. So hopefully he'll have a good staff team around him. Note this will also be the smallest College at 127 (not great for "atmosphere" and sports events). They also have zero grounds at the College. Plus all meals will be at Cumberland College (2 minute walk).
I, personally, would avoid it like the plague. It might be OK but wait and see the feedback from this year.

Was thinking about it but decided against it. Dont feel like I need to cos I'm sure everyone will make friends easy enough. Personal preference though haha

I don't think I'll go either as I'm sure there will be no problem meeting and making new friends.

I am not going to Carrington but I think you guys have the right idea not going. You guys will make friends eventually and there is no point spending a couple hundy on flights to get there and back if you are going to go back down in a few days time.

Students don't go back home after parent orientation. They move in permanently when they arrive at Parent Orientation

Yeah don't worry, you won't have any problems making friends if you don't go. I figured it was expensive and couldn't really be bothered so didn't come down till the day before we were supposed to.

There was a few dozen who did it this year and when you get to the college they have all bonded and become good friends. There's also about a couple around 200 who don't go, so it won't be a problem.

I have heard the food is extra good on those few days though

Thats a good point... I think I'm going to end up going anyway because neither my parents (nor I) have ever been to Dunedin/checked out the university so they want a thorough look when they go to drop me off...fair enough

Also it might give me time to get used to things before the mad rush when everyone else arrives...that's just my opinion anyway

You may aswell, like it'd be good to get your bearings and everything, especially if you haven't ever been there!

For sure. I didn't go to the orientation and I would say you're going to realise that everyone is SUPER friendly in the first few weeks so it's very easy to make friends. Everyone is in the same boat as you and just wants to get on everyone's good side. Take advantage of everyone's openness in the first few weeks and meet as many people as possible!

You will eventually end up knowing (almost) everyone at your hostel as the year progresses, but you might still be meeting people in second semester (heh)

You should definitely consider going :) I know the people who did come for orientation, didn't regret it. Plus, making new friends during orientation's always a plus. And you get to know your way around Dunedin as well, which is always great :)

(do it!)
