Otago Halls of Residence

Aww haha he seems really nice :)
I am so excited! Is this the initiation thing? Do the second years just make the freshers get really drunk or will we have to do gross stuff? (Have heard of the Selwyn "Leith Run" which involves a bath tub, eggs and rotten food??) hahaha

yep, but defs try everything out. It sounds bit extreme but drinking isnt forced (up to you) but the activities you get to meet everyone literally. You also go *pleasant sightseeing* as we did this year, I don't want to spoil it too much it is a week full of just Knox activities and they change every year so its up to the Exec (2nd years who got voted in), but yea bring a spare change of clothes that will get messed up lol.

So, can anyone comment pros and cons about Arana? Also what's the difference between the houses and the big buildings (floors)? Do we get prefereneces?
With the kitchen areas, do people actually use them? Are they sufficient to cook meals for yourself?
thanks

Okay, so I've made my choices - Citycol/cumby/toroa for my three. All of them fit within the 'other colleges' (not first-choice-only) category, so I'm happy with that! haha

Any tips/hints on the interests 'mini essay'? I know it's something we're meant to do but I really want to give it a great shot to hopefully overcome the fact I'm not a first year.
Hey do you know anything about city college? what is it like?

Everybody, if you can, go to Arana, honestly one of the best years I've had even having been through HSFY! Really helpful too!

Hey! I got into Arana :)
I have a question about arrivals though. How bad is it arriving a day late? Do people arrive late? (Just cos flights are expensive and I don't think I can get a cheap flight in time)

What are the chances - not many people arrive late but I was one of them!! The only issue is that it's intimidating to go late to the 'party' and feel like you don't quite fit in! But Arana is not like that at all luckily:) if you've got friends even better! Otherwise arriving late is not a problem whatsoever!

Does anyone remember what kind of things they brought to their college? Any essentials that anyone didn't think of bringing?
Like I got into St Margarets and the information given about what to bring is very vague...

Also how does the whole unisex bathrooms work? Do you literally brush your teeth with guys and girls and such?

Thanks!

Unisex bathrooms are an illusion - there is no American pie raunchy bathroom encounter (:(;)) you'll spend 95% of your visits all alone with the other 5% consisting of pleasantries! As with what to bring its personal preference really, you can buy cheap 30$ printers at tent city during O-week and any other not so essential essentials so don't worry about them, clothes, photos, just the real essentials I think! And a years supply of ear plugs is my best advice! (Stolen from @frootloop:p) so not really my advice...

Thank you! that made me feel so much less awkward about arriving late haha :P (I'll probably end up going a day late)

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask but does anyone know when we get our bonds for the halls back? (the one we paid at the beginning of the year)
Thanks :)

@Songina: For St Margaret's, maybe some pins? I mean, they're pretty cheap at New World, but it's just something I thought was helpful, since they have these boards you can pin stuff on in your room. Also, St Margaret's has pretty cheap printing (10c for 1 side, 8c for each side if double sided b&w) and you get $15 credit at the start of the year.
@Puppa101: I don't know which college you went to, but I got mine from St Margaret's back about a week ago?

Oh and with regards to bathrooms, they are all separate. It depends which floor you're on, but with my floor it was 17 people sharing 3 bathrooms and 1 toilet.

You're kidding... 17:1 applicant to seat ratio for toilets at St Margs?
Is this a typical student:toilet ratio or is St Margs just special?

Unicol has floors of 18-20 sharing 3 toilets and 3 showers. It's pretty rare to have to queue for either of them tbh.

6:1 Frootloop! That's more like it.
Did you have to queue much for the loo at St Margs? @randomhsfy100
18 people sharing 1 toilet doesn't sound very appealing.
Guess I'll just have to put up with it
