Otago Halls of Residence

Not for the loo, no. Like I said earlier, each of the bathrooms has a toilet, so it's essentially 17 people sharing 4 toilets and 3 showers, which is slightly better than next door at unicol :P
That being said, there is a bit of the queue in the morning if you want to shower between 8-830 or between 7-730 depending on whether majority of the healthscis on your floor are starting at 8am or 9am. It's kinda frowned upon by some of the RA's, but if you're really desperate, just go to the floor above/below's bathrooms/toilets.

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask but does anyone know when we get our bonds for the halls back? (the one we paid at the beginning of the year)
Thanks :)

I'm pretty sure all the University owned residential colleges did not have bonds this year. so only st mags, knox, selwyn, salmond and city col would have bonds - and i can't speak for them sorry

Just found this thread and I'm wondering how well Knox is considered as a res college in terms of getting students into medicine? I know it's one of the older more prestigious ones from what my parents (past Otago students) told me, which is why I referenced it first, but I haven't really being paying any attention to these NZ threads because I'm studying in Australia (Kiwi Expat). I did intent on going as an undergraduate here, but I received an OP2 and 50% UMAT, so I'm only really a chance at JCU and maybe UNSW (had interviews at both schools). I got accepted into Knox earlier this year and HSFY is my back up option. What's it like?

Residential colleges have little to do when it comes to affecting your chances of getting into med. Simple as that. As for the prestigious thing, sure its one of the older ones with a lot tradition associated with it but that doesn't necessarily make it 'prestigious'. My two cents: unless you have a good reason for go to a certain hall, choose one that's close to St. Daves. Good luck!

Hey I just want to know. On the website, it says that theres 162 rooms (I am going to live in Hayward) Does the 162 include the staff and RAs? Im just curious :) Thank you

HI! does anoyone know what course/paper HEAL is? I was looking at blogs from previos years and they've mentioned this. The course for 2016 does not include this, but e have PUBH192. Has there been a change?

They said at the preliminary lecture that it's been changed to PUBH, but I think it's the same course just under a different name :)

Hey guys, I'm thinking of Knox but was wondering how hard is it to get in? My grades at school we're just okay, Merit endorsement in all years and a few excellence subject endorsements, I didn't play much sport or have any leadership positions. I'm on a gap year now so am aiming to try make a final decision on the halls before applications open. Is there much of a chance of me getting in if I put Knox as first choice or should I look elsewhere?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Zach,
I'm at Knox this year and going by the last two years, I would say your chances of getting in are pretty good. :)
I got excellence in level 2 but didn't do any extracurriculars and there are people here who got merit too. As long as you sound like a cool person in your application who will work hard and is keen to get involved in the college lifestyle, I reckon you'll be fine. Knox has pretty much everything in regards to sporting and cultural activities (tramping club, ski trip, billiards competition, choir/band), so if there is something you enjoy and would be interested doing here put it down. Talk about anything interesting you did on your gap year etc.

I love it here and think you should definitely apply :p Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

I've just received an offer from a college I don't really want. If I leave the offer open, will I still get other offers in the meanwhile? Or do I have to decline to be able to get other offers? Kinda scared to decline though...

Unfortunately, getting an offer from a hall you didn't apply for means the ones you did apply for turned you down. The exact same thing happened to me, however I did manage to get a place in my first choice by emailing someone... (it was a while ago and I honestly can't remember who I emailed, I suggest starting at the accomodation office) and they managed to sort me a place.
My situation may be different to yours, however, as I could not accept the place to the hall I'd been offered because they did not cater to my dietary requirements - though it is worth a try. Just remember that there will be a LOT of people in the same position as you, so you may not be a priority for them, just because you 'don't like that hall' (sorry!).

Also remember that the hall you live in will not define your year. I know tons of people who reluctantly accepted places in halls they didn't want to go to and they had the time of their lives. First year is exactly what you make of it.

Hope this helps a little.

Generally what hall you go to wont make much of a difference. You'll still have have a good time wherever you go, and it won't impact your chances of getting into med at all. If you decline, you'll go to the back of a general waiting list and you might not get an offer from any one.

(The only exception is probably Toroa, since it's dining is a bit away from the college itself.)

I've just received an offer from Salmond College--not my 1st, 2nd or 3rd preference...Not feeling that great about getting turned down by 3 colleges haha (Carrington, Hayward, Cumberland) Can anyone tell me about their experience at Salmond?

Also, I've applied for med via the grad pathway (I'm currently at Auckland btw) and I don't find out till the 23rd of Dec. I don't want to accept an offer from Salmond and pay the non-refundable entry-fee only to find out that I didn't get into med down the road. Can I request them to leave the offer open till then? Any suggestions/advice?

Thanks in advance!

Don't worry about not getting into your first preferences. I think some halls may prefer to have first year students. I know a few people who went to Salmond and enjoyed it.

What do you think of your chances of getting into Otago med? If you know you have a decent GPA and are reasonably confident, it could be worthwhile paying it now. If you're not sure about getting in you might be able to wait for a while, but potentially lose your place. It could be worthwhile emailling the Salmond office and asking them too.
