Well done pete.

SASOL - if you did HEAL211, on your own you'd increase the class size by 10%

I viewed my HEAL192 exam script today and in the process had a very long conversation with some staff of the epi department. It sounds like the extent of the involvement of the staff of HEAL192 in med 2 this year may be limited to one lecture, delivered by Patricia Priest. Phew! I think the staff of that paper did do a relatively good job in the end given what they had to work with, but the bad memories of that paper mean I really don't want to have much contact with them again. Oh, and I'm really annoyed because they decided to leave out the question "what does a p-value tell you about precision" and mark the exam out of 148, because that question was far too difficult. It seems you were right skyglow that HEAL192 gets low marks mainly because HSFYers have difficulty applying and understanding knowledge...

In terms of Carrington and dent, there were some people who were seriously considering dent, it just happens that none of them chose it in the end. There wasn't anyone I knew of who started off the year going specifically for dent - there was a definate feeling of med being the ultimate goal (and the people who later on in the year aimed for dent only seemed to do so because they thought they weren't getting into med). Not commenting on what I think of this view of dent being second-best (but still a very desirable course), but I definately felt it coming out at times, so I'm not surprised about only 1 in dent. Evidently the atmosphere at Selwyn was a bit different?

The tutor I had for one of the epi tutorials we had in med 2 was the same tutor I had in HEAL192 which was pretty cool.

Yeah it's kinda sad actually that they have to dumb things down, because those aren't very difficult concepts to grasp anyway, and if you really understood what a p-value was (instead of just being able to recite the definition), then you've pretty much had to answer that question for yourself in your own head before seeing it in the exam!

I would love it if they made the exams so that everything was at least as difficult as that question haha. Would really separate out the students well. I didn't really like the exams for papers like HUBS because you get to a point where putting in additional work gives you increasingly diminishing returns, and your final mark depended more on things like silly mistakes. There were some questions of that difficulty once in a while in PHSI, which was nice to see, but not enough of them

I find it weird when people flip from med or dent to the other. I thought they were quite different careers.

One more HSFYer now!
Hey everyone, been following this thread for ages and thought now's a good time to join!

Welcome welcome! Help us propagate this beast of a thread lol.

congrats pete!! (yy) and koochkooch i'm sure if you give everything you've got day in day out you will end up in med dude ... all the best!! (yy)

Congrats pete!! Thats awesome, must feel amazing! You already down here? Hopefully you are haha.

I think a lot of people think dent is similar to med. Some aspects would be, but most not. I guess things like hours influence choice, and some people head into HSFY not knowing exactly what they want to do.

Thanks everyone! It really hasnt sunken in yet! Its crazy to go from planning your Bmedsci degree one day to sitting in the hospital lecture theater as a med student the next.

Uhhh....don't think there was a HUBS lecturer with a Dutch accent, I think the only lecturers with accents were Colin Brown whos Scottish and Latika whatever her name is whos Indian.

I was wondering where the HSFY thread went, they should have put a redirect in the undergrad forum!

at least we won't have to see all those Aussie threads now.

I definitely am enjoying my freedom, kind of wish i'd picked alcohol free accommodation though.

Well I heard Carrington has a good balance, so you should be sweet with the alcohol thing. A mate of mine who was there said most people put study first, but enjoy a few nights out. I dont think it hurt their chances of getting into med too much haha
