I'm in NZ, not Australia, which might explain that. Still not happy I paid that much :/

OH just realised you guys are from NZ. nm.. must be different there.

Ok, so I read somewhere on MSO, it could even be the subject matter at hand (who knows haven't been here for ages), that umat doesn't generally prevent people from ranking high enough to make med. It's a collaborative thing, right?

So get this

Aparently * someone last year didn't make med with a 98 HSFY average.

98 AVERAGE!

I mean... that's insane. If it's true it would count as the most unfortunate thing I've heard all year! What kind of UMAT are we talking here? Personally, I'm writing it off as a lie but it could happen I guess...

*emphasis overkill but we are talking about health sci-ers, the kings and queens of psychological warfare and, at times, utter BS!

Haha that is utter crap, with that kind of average I'd say you'd have to not even do UMAT to miss out :P
And yes, by the sounds of things it is more than possible to make up for a sh*tty UMAT with good HSFY scores

I think someone's just trying to scare you. :p

HSFY lesson number 1:

If you hear that someone knows someone who heard of someone who APPARENTLY missed out on med with a 98% average... Chances are it's bullshit until you meet that person for yourself.

Aparently * someone last year didn't make med with a 98 HSFY average.
A few possibilities:
1, Their weighted UMAT score is below 37.71 (calculated using GG's formula, assuming 77.5 cutoff - this clearly shows that you need both, but 37.71 in UMAT is, like, not even 10th percentile, so this is unlikely)
2, There is a minimum on UMAT (like if your UMAT is below, say, 20th percentile - that is you've been beaten by 80% of the people, then you're out) - this is unlikely as the ranking score formula would've taken care of setting a bar on UMAT.
3, 98 average from their 6 best core papers plus the eighth paper, the other one happens to be below 70% (unlikely)
4, They didn't even do UMAT (also kind of unlikely)
5, They forgot to get their blood test thing in
6, They failed the English test but didn't do anything about it (if you fail that and don't do ENGL126 or get permission not to do ENGL126 by restest or pulling out the NCEA Literacy card, you are not eligible for professional courses)
7, Other complication with admission regulations
8, The story is utter crap (highly likely, especially given the nature of HSFY)

Number 8
[OFFTOPIC]For those not currently throwing fish at cathay in chatbox, how'd the chem test go?[/OFFTOPIC]

made some real silly mistakes! not happy. think ill get like 26 if i havent made anymore... and i was getting 28/29 in the practice tests...it was so weird i just made some really stupid mistakes after getting stuck on question 2 for a bit. kicking myself so hard right now. dont know what happened.

Only a terms test man, you'll be fine :) And I feel your pain on question 2, I reckon the first two questions were the hardest ones, had a wee heart attack at first xD

I hope all you guys are doing great for health science.

I want to ask past year HSFY students a question.
I've realized that chemistry lectures are going to finish very earlier than the other papers because we've nearly finished module4 Organic Chemistry, and we are heading to module 5 which is the last module we are going to learn. I've found out that after we finish module5, we will have revision lectures.
How many revision lectures will we have until the final exam? Do you recommend us to go to all the revision lectures? Or maybe only going to the lectures which we are weak at??
I would appreciate to hear from you guys. Thanks :)

Normally one revision lecture per module. Worth going - sometimes they do things like go over past exam questions and outline how they'd mark them, and if you're lucky they'll even hint at what's in the exam.

(Nitpicking mode, sorry) Actually, going by the schedule found on Blackboard, chem finishes at the same time as Physics - Physics has 3 ECG lectures then call it the end of the semester on the Tuesday, while chem keeps going until Friday with 5 revision lectures, HUBS has the last lecture (a revision lecture) on the Thrusday, and CELS, worst of all, goes right up to the Friday with actual course content.

The above refer to Week 22, and, newsflash, tomorrow starts week 19, which really hit me just then - exams are literally a month away...

Wait, so we only have two more weeks of actual physics? Or did I read that wrong? If so, then score, thats another week less content than I thought
Oh, and I wouldn't get too excited about exams just yet, we've got 2 GLMS (HUBS and CELS), 8 labs, and a HUBS terms test yet to go, so plenty of fun left for semester one :P

You're just a ray of sunshine, froot.

[OFFTOPIC]Oh I know, optimism radiating from my every pore ^_^[/OFFTOPIC]

The upside is that if you do well enough in these exams (i.e. get into med), you'll never have to do mid-year exams again... gotta love 100% end-of-year exam assessment.

Sorry to be a pain, but tomorrow starts week 19, hence week 19, 20, and 21, so there's 3 weeks of actual physics. But it's not bad - we're finally coming to the atoms and radiation part, which I am always hugely excited about (I'm like, THE nuclear physics nerd, lol), the only things in the way are two lectures worth of Craig Rodger (always good), and a PCC with some guy who Craig Rodger describes as being quite popular, IIRC.

But yeah, there's plenty more stuff to do in the semester - we're practically only a week after mid-semester break (yet the exams are so close)...
