If you read the email sent to all Otago students on the 30th of June, it states:

thanks.

Does anyone know if you have to do course approval for your 8th paper, if its on your pims paper list.

If it's on your PIMS list then it should have been approved in your semester one course approval, someone correct me if I'm wrong (which is inevitable).

If you got an official form to add a paper (that would have looked similar to your semester 1 course approval form), filled it out with the details of your chosen 8th paper and had it signed off by the health sciences admissions office, and it has since appeared on PIMS then no, you don't need to do any course approval (because you've already done this).

Aww man, i still cant decide if i am going to do an 8th paper or not which will most likely be maori.
Either have more time to study vs Have a 'backup' paper which will most likely bore me.

Hmmm... what have you guys decided?

Stand by for a "The 8th Paper, for Current HSFYers" in the read me thread which I'm writing right now :P

EDIT: Just for the record, I'm not doing one due to lack of interest, and a fair confidence that I probably won't need a grade-bump.

Honestly? I have nfi. I want to take PSYC out of interest, but MAOR would most likely get me a better grade (which I kinda need..). But I certainly am taking an 8th paper, otherwise any blunders in the semester two papers would suddenly send me completely out (considering I've already hashed a paper).

if you have papers from semester 1 which you aren't happy with, maybe chem like heaps of people, do an 8th. it could give you a grade boost especially if you do maori, im doing one to try and make sure i keep my average from going down in case epi is mean to me or something.

I did BSNS even though I didn't really need to, and I really enjoyed it. It also made 2nd semester a lot less stressful because it meant I didn't have to worry about epi.

Because I realised we've been planning this, without releasing it to the masses :p :
The New Zealand undergrad entry (HSFY and OLY1) pages are being shifted over the next few days, and will be moved to the 'undergrad entry' forum (as opposed to the 'studying medicine' forum, where they currently reside) in order to leave these forums for current MBChB students.
A new 'New Zealand' sub-forum will be set-up in the 'undergrad entry' forum, in which there will be distinct HSFY and OLY1 threads, plus (eventually) threads comparing the two.
The OLY1 (Auckland) and HSFY (Otago) threads will be kept the same, although the system will be somewhat different, and may take a little getting used to.
For more information around these proposed changes, and to give your thoughts, please see this page:https://www.medstudentsonline.com.au/showthread.php?21385-Tidy-up-of-the-NZ-forums

Do people actually buy textbooks for their 8th paper? BSNS104 in my case :)
Is it useful to have it with you? Or do libraries have enough copies?
Sorry if this question was already asked.

Best thing to do is to take the same strategy you would with any textbook if you're unsure whether or not to buy it - try out the copies in the library and see if they are helpful to you. When I did BSNS104 the textbook aligned very well with the course so the pre-readings were very helpful. The textbook has since changed - I don't know how helpful the new one is.

Welcome to the new NZ Med School Entry forum, guys.
Just for those interested, I've found some insights on the structure of MAOR102 from... A while back...
Final is 40% Internal 60%. Internals are comprised of two essays one of them is woth 10% and other one is worth 20%. There is a group presentation which involves speeches worth 10% and a midsemester test (which you sit online) worth 20%. Dont worry too much about the number of internals its not too hard getting a good mark on these. Likewise the finals are quite straight foward. You wont have to spend much time getting a good mark, but do go to the lectures and keep up with the readings.

EDIT: MAOR102 in 2010 did NOT involve a group presentation.

Hey just letting you know that for 2010 the MAOR paper was...
50% internal, 50% external
- 2 x 10% online tests each with 40 questions
- Short essay, around 1200 words which was worth 10%
- Long essay, around 2000ish words which was worth 20%
- Final was 20 MCQ's , 3 short answer (I think), and a short essay - 50% in total
:)

How hard did you find Maori smile, and how did you find the second semester workload with it?

I found Maori pretty cruisy. Really nice only having two lectures a week :)
Second semester on the whole was definitely a lot more relaxed and I was done by 1pm every day. I think going into sem2 there is noticeably less class and even though I was still doing 4 papers, it was still much more relaxed.

:)

For any interested, semester two timetable has been released to PIMS.
Edit: For any taking MAOR102, can you PM me the times it's on? I want to see if I can drop PSYC for it (because PSYC just made my timetable look a little too evil).

Exciting. . Not.
Timetable is out,
And I got a night lab. =[
Walking in the winter cold night.
Is anyone looking forward to sem 2? =D
