You know, I once believed the stories that Auckland town was actually classy. Then I actually saw it for myself, at 2am one Saturday night. Turns out that scumminess and savageness is pretty ubiquitous whenever you mix students + saturday night + lots of alcohol. At least Dunedin's open about it. :p

Auckland's classy???? (:p I may be a bit desensitised since I've lived here forevrrrrrrr)
I live in Auckland lol......and when my friends and I went out one night we got shouted at by some random guy in gibberish @________@
It was freakishly scary.

And just in case I seem like I'm on MSO wayyyyy too much I'm trying to read through that monster thread with 150ish pages.....it's taking forever!!

@frootloop
Gosh, I really hope there's a lot of minors so I won't be the only one standing outside somewhere hahaha

Yeah I have to agree with having the latest addition of textbooks since I love opening new textbooks. Coool, I'll probably get the ones you recommended new and the other, less essential ones, 2nd hand then or not at all :D

D: Speaking of O Week non-freshmen/freshers don't actually pick on the us, right??
Plenty of other freshers should be <18, you'll be fine :)
Erm, 'latest edition' =/= 'brand new'. I wouldn't really recommend getting any of them brand new, to be honest, since it's unlikely you'll ever use them again after HSFY (even the HUBS textbook is probably a bit useless after HSFY, I gather it's too basic for second-year).
And you wont be 'picked on' as such, but my friends and I *did* get egged by people sitting on the roof of their flat.. (Although they were drunk enough that our being freshers probably had little to do with it :p )

Probably didn't, but some people are scarily good at picking out freshers from non-freshers. You just wait until next year - a lot of freshers are rather easy to spot, particularly at the start of the year.

But yes, in my second year I was targeted a couple of times as being a "fresher". Never happened in third year thankfully.

=SS I'm hoping this won't be offtopic but if it is I'm sorry in advance!
Would I be disadvantaged if I have UMAT prep material (don't worry I'm not mentioning prep companies) from previous years?- I just feel so guilty for asking my parents to buy me $500+ worth of stuff so I won't ask them.

crucible1317: wait, why would you be disadvantaged if you had UMAT prep material? o.O Unless you were asking if you'd be disadvantaged if you reused the papers and stuff you had this year...?

It's from 2003-2005 and I got it off a very nice friend :) I was worried since apparently the UMAT exam format has changed after 2003??

Ohhh, right I see. This probably isn't the right thread for it, but I'll answer it anyway. I don't know if you'd be disadvantaged per se. The exam format, however, has changed from 2003-2005 so I wouldn't do those papers and "expect" the exact same type of questions to turn up in the actual exam. Anyway, I'd say to go ahead and use them, but make sure you buy the acer practice paper 2 and do that to get a more accurate feel for the actual umat. There are plenty of tips and strategies around on MSO, as well as practice questions, so if you're reluctant to spend that money on prep material it's not absolutely essential and it's still possible to do well (as evidenced by the kiwi moderators).

^This (edit: And the post above mine now, which I somehow managed to not see). I mean, the advantage is definitely debatable, but it isn't like UMAT's questions change vastly from year-to-year, so buying last year's/like any of the last 4 year's papers wouldn't disadvantage you (if that's what you're asking?). Although to be honest I'd recommend saving the $500... If you're going to (waste time/money on) prep, buy second-hand stuff off trademe or something.

No advertising on the forum, thanks
~Froot :)

double standards much???

No, not really. I've already stated on the HSFY 2011 thread that you can't do it, and it's in the MSO rules, yet you did it. If you have an issue with this, take it up via PM with me, one of the other NZ subforum mods, or one of the other mods/admins. I stated that sending PM's isn't against the rules, not that you could post asking for PMs, thus I don't see how this is a double-standard? The post I assume you're using as evidence of a 'double-standard' was the first of the sort, so it was left there to remind everyone else not to do it. I/we aren't favouring anyone here.
