Oh dear. I just read through all 156 pages... I really am going insane...
Don't worry, I've read more of MSO than that, and I'm still sane (or so I think).

[offtopic][MENTION=9739]medicinegirl[/MENTION] I know how to do them!! :DD It's [off topic] and [/off topic] without the space. It's funny how this has to be in an offtopic box.
Ahaha, thanks. I'm kind of an English geek....lol maybe not kind of since I see director's techniques in every movie I watch D: hahah

Is Unipol a gym??- I keep reading about it somewhere, probably in the prospectus.

I really don't want to sound REALLY vain here, but we have mirrors in residential colleges, right? And what happens during Orientation week if some of us are still minors? Do they brand us and prevent us from participating??? (I won't be 18 till March)

Unipol is a gym that's free to students. It's due to move into a flashy new location by the stadium at the start of next year as well.

Yes, you get mirrors in the colleges. Should be one in your room, and of course there's the bathrooms as well.

As far as I recall, the deal for under 18s in O week is that you can attend the events but have to wear a wristband that stops you buying drinks (and they make you trade in your ID for a wristband so if you cut the wristband off you don't get your ID back and it gets reported).

Btw, I'm keen to buy textbooks off you guys for next year :D
I'm afraid I have to go all moderatey here and remind everyone that we're not allowed to buy/sell on the forums.
[offtopic]But if you send pm's, then it neeever happened ;) [/offtopic]

Welcome (to the insanity corner?) and congratulations on being able to head into HSFY with the insight of having essentially tracked 3 health sci cohorts. Hopefully this insight will make you less nervous than your fellow health scis who haven't done the same, I know it calmed me down.

Haha. It was insanely helpful. I admit I am weird and actually took all the main points and copied and pasted onto a word document so I wouldn't have to read through it all again :D Yeah, it's really good knowing what to expect next year.

I recall doing that... But you might wish to know that later the NZ Forum Development Team went through and picked out the important & relevant points and stuck them into this thread.

Oh darn it! Ahaha, that's such a bummer but at least the events are still go-able.

And I know textbooks have been discussed before but what would you guys recommend? Buying next year from the UBS or getting them 2nd hand or a mixture of both??
:P I'm the type to obsess over the textbooks list since I'll feel paranoid if I don't get majority of them even though I've read through threads here saying that you only need a few of them.

I went to none of the 'official' O-week stuff, it seemed a bit tame compared to bars and whatnot (although if you're <18 then bars and whatnot are out of the question :p )
As for textbooks, 2nd hand is fine, but it's easier to have the latest edition, as although the page references will usually be given for the older eds, there's often some minor detail differences.. And it's easier to group study if you've all got the same books. Personally I got the HUBS, PHSI, CHEM and HEAL books new from UBS, and the CELS book second hand (didn't get the BIOC one at all), and I can honestly say they were by-and-large a total waste of money. If I had to do it all again, HUBS, HEAL, and *maybe* PHSI would be all I'd buy.

OK guys, a few of you seem quite keen to buy your textbooks now to get them second hand. Don't. There will be so many students selling their HSFY textbooks during O week next year that you really really don't need to buy them now. 2nd hand HSFY textbooks are ridiculously easy to find.

Gosh, I really hope there's a lot of minors so I won't be the only one standing outside somewhere hahaha

Yeah I have to agree with having the latest addition of textbooks since I love opening new textbooks. Coool, I'll probably get the ones you recommended new and the other, less essential ones, 2nd hand then or not at all :D

I might be being a little pedantic since I'm just gonna go copy and paste the ones you recommended into a word document :p

/EDIT

I wasn't going to buy them now that would totally detract from my 20kg of luggage at the airport hahah
Ohhh, so O Week's the best time to get them.

D: Speaking of O Week non-freshmen/freshers don't actually pick on the us, right??

D: Speaking of O Week non-freshmen/freshers don't actually pick on the us, right??

Would you prefer the truth or would you like to spend the rest of summer in blissful ignorance? :p

In all seriousness, yeah, freshers tend to be the butt of jokes, especially in O week, but it's not that bad ever since they got rid of the toga parade. Just stay clear of Castle Street.

I can totally relate to wanting to buy heaps of new textbooks, but just stick to the first semester ones during O week, and maybe the epidemiology textbook if you find a good deal on it. Also make sure you do check out the prices from the uni bookshop first so you've got a good reference price.

The truth, of course!!! I'd like to be prepared hahaha

If it's just jokes, I can handle that! I assumed all non-freshers would be throwing stuff at us or something hahah
O_O What happens at Castle St???

:lol:Fellow bibliophile? XD

Sweet. Thanks for the info.

I got stuff thrown at me when I was a fresher - don't suppose you remember the media coverage of the 2009 toga parade?

Students' toga parade turns ugly | Otago Daily Times Online News : Otago, South Island, New Zealand & International News

^That article makes it sound a bit worse than it really was, but it isn't far off the truth :p. There's a reason the parade got permanently cancelled. Still, some freshers still get made to suffer, particularly the ones at Knox. It's just part of the culture in Dunedin - it's actually really cool.

As for what happens at Castle street, wait until 2nd year to find out (or read about it in the student magazine). Just don't go there as a fresher.

On the topic of textbooks - I've bought a fair few over the last 3 years, all new. I do love the feeling of opening a brand new textbook. About the only book I've regretted buying is the BIOC192 textbook.

 My reaction to that is like O_____O||||

Oh well, least I'll know what to expect then :p I bet it is cool after you've been there and done that hahahah xD And gosh, Castle St seems odious and mysterious now.

:lol:Love that feeling hahahah. Oh gosh, I just know this will make me want to buy all the textbooks on the list- which I won't but it'll be so tempting!!
