nooo.... I was quite happy with my mark! oh the suspense continues...

Just a nudge to those who haven't seen this thread, it'd be really helpful for determining the cut-off if as many people as possible posted there :) (Obviously only if you feel comfortable putting your marks up in public, which there's definitely no obligation to do).

Also to echo froot, as you'll find in a post in the said thread (quoted below), greenglacier, our resident med student, offered to calculate ranking score and/or give advice regarding chances of making it into med to those who don't want to publicize their marks - he can be contacted by PM.

Hey everyone. This thread seems a good place to make my annual offer:

Once you know all your exam results (i.e. by tomorrow or Friday), if you want your ranking score calculated and an appraisal of your chances of getting into med, but don't want to publicly post your marks/UMAT on the forum, send me a private message with your marks and UMAT (including individual section marks) and I'll give you my honest opinion on your chances given previous years cutoffs. Your marks and UMAT will be treated confidentially (so I won't tell them to anyone else).

Since I know you're (or at least are about to be) a paranoid HSFY, I wont bother with the 'try at the library before you buy' thing. If you're going to buy them, I'd recommend: HUBS, PHSI, HEAL. That is all. (CHEM=less than useless. CELS=Kind of semi-useful at times, but not really. BIOC=I've never even seen a copy of the textbook in real life, true story. But I got 96% in the terms test. Thus I can assume it isn't really a requirement). Oh, and if you decide to do MAOR102, the textbook for that is *really* helpful (like, the kind of helpful that means you don't really even need your own lecture notes to any great extent).

greenglacier: Ok, I have one hypothetical question. What happens if you get an offer for Dent and get waitlisted for Med? If you accept dent, can you maintain your waitlist place for med?

Past HSFY threads indicate that you can only accept one firm offer, but can accept as many waitlist places as you like.

I see. That is a bit unfair for those people who are waitlisted for dent, but I guess a place would eventually become available, possibly after the first waitlist offers have been made.
This is a veeeeeeery long weekend :)

So what are the actual names of the useful testbooks? Or.. the most useful textbook for HSFY?

I have a book voucher for $125 which is only useable in a store where I live, so I wanted to see if I had enough $ to order one in.

Thank you!

Oh and another question - do you have any recommendations on what to take to uni? e.g. 20000 pens, 3 mattresses, 30 rolls of toilet paper, 50 electric blanket

I'm not sure if you can casually find these at your local bookstore...
HUBS: Anatomy & Physiology 7th Edition, by Patton & Thibodeau
PHSI: Introduction to Biological Physics for the Health and Life Sciences, by Franklin et al
HEAL: Essential Epidemiology 2nd Edition, by Webb & Bain

I know you're joking, but quantities massively excessive. Check if you're allowed an electric blanket under college rules, some may not as it could be a fire hazard. Your college will definitely provide mattresses, and I suspect toilet paper won't be an issue.

Pens: depending on your habits with notes (digital vs written, etc) you may run through between 3 and 10 decent durable pens (and if they're crap, perhaps a dozen or two) in the course of HSFY. You won't need all of them at once though.

Remember, going to college isn't going to boarding school (where you're essentially trapped on campus, that's my impression), and coming to Dunedin isn't going into the wild - if you need anything, we do have branches of all major retail chains, so when the 2 pens you come here with run out, just walk down to Warehouse Stationery to buy a few more...

Remember that as a university student you are free to go wherever pleases you, at any time (obviously the middle of the night would be inconvenient), and while some colleges may have security systems that require swipecard entry if you return late at night, none of them impede you from going out to the store to get some snacks or some pens. While it's nice to have everything pre-organised, should you find issues later it is more than possible to buy stuff in Dunedin...

EDIT: The funny thing is, population-wise and I suspect store-wise (my mum, who works there, complains of shopping inadequacy), Dunedin is bigger than Palmerston North, where your profile indicates that you come from.

Yeah, general rule I use is to weigh up the inconvenience/possible cost of moving something to Dunedin with the inconvenience/cost of buying it in Dunedin. So when it comes to stuff like stationery, if you're flying down, best to just buy it from warehouse stationery in Dunedin. Oh, and your hall should eventually send you something listing what you'll find in your room already.
