I'm currently doing NCEA level 3. After reading a couple of posts about how CIE is more beneficial for HSFY, I'm pretty keen to find out what CIE chem and bio cover. So long story short, does anyone know where I could get some study materials for CIE chem and bio to get a better grounding for HSFY? NCEA level 3 chem and bio seem quite simple and I am pretty confident in them.

Also, does anyone have old HSFY lecture slides / notes / course outlines / etc that I could possibly get? (Please don't give that lecture about wasting holidays studying, I've read it around here millions of times, and just want to know what it's like.)

One more thing, any tips for long term UMAT preping?

Thanks in advance

You really don't need to do CIE to do well in HSFY. I literally did zero science at high school, not even level 1 - came into HSFY with no bio knowledge (did a bridging course for chem but it really didn't cover that much of what HSFY did anyways). I wouldn't bother too much in getting CIE papers etc. I guess if you *really* want to do something I'll list a few tasks which might save you some rote learning later on.

Firstly, watch all of Biology | Khan Academy those videos, the body stuff really helped me for first semester hubs.
Next Healthcare and Medicine | Khan Academy are quite interesting and while strictly not too deep in info, they might help a little bit.
BIOC is pretty simple, if you want to rote learn some stuff just go out and learn all of the steps of metabolism (all enzyme names, all products etc). Glycolysis, krebs, ETC. Be able to draw a diagram from memory of all of them in high detail and that will make part of BIOC really simple.

I'll try think of some more stuff, but that's a decent lot to be getting on with.

Actually, just as a final aside, if you don't know by now- learn what is a good studying technique (I don't mean just highlighting every important looking word and pretending that's learning).

Nicely put there my good man.
The studying technique you just described; amazing.
Most of the stuff on khan academy for bio was covered in level 2 and I have been on khan academy a lot, that's why I'm looking for extra stuff particularly from HSFY lectures and lecture slide/notes.

Uh, I'll message you some stuff

Also don't beat around the bush, I can take the cold, hard facts..

Hi there, you'll find more information about entry here.

As you've asked, I'll be direct, if you were in the General category (which you're not, I'll get to that in a second), then by last year's cutoff (and remember they do fluctuate a bit) you would basically be out of the running - it's not impossible to get in with your UMAT, but you would've needed a 95.75% average (which, for some, is very achievable), so without an 8th paper you'll need a second semester average of more than 100% (which isn't possible).

But seeing as you're rural, it makes the prospects a little better, I'm not sure how much, but if you're taking an 8th paper (and one of your first semester papers was well below your first semester average), there is something of a chance you might get in (probably off the waiting list), if you work very hard from now till the exams.

A few years ago, a member of the forum was devastated by a terrible UMAT, but he pulled it together and did amazingly in the second semester exams, and got in. While I'm not trying to give you false hope, I do want to say that you shouldn't give up.

For now, focus on the exams, because you might have a chance (if you fight for it), and after the exams, use the two months between exams and offers to think of a plan B.

In any case, you have not wasted a year - if you don't get into medicine there are other professional courses, but if they don't interest you, you can always continue with a BSc or BBiomedSc and go for grad entry! Remember that HSFY is the first year of a BSc/BBiomedSc as well!

PS: I've merged your thread with the big HSFY 2012 Chat thread, since it basically belongs there.

Thanks Cathay, I am doing an 8th paper but best case scenario (through rough maths) for me after sem 2 exams is a borderline 90 FYHS avg. not looking too good eh..
I can't say I know that much about the rural scheme, but I'd have thought a ~90% HSFY average and a not-really-all-that-bad UMAT would put you in a reasonable position, so long as you can w*nk out a really good 'Why I want to be a rural doc' essay.
I'd suggest you talk to the nice lady at the admissions office, they can't technically tell you cut-offs, but they'd probably be able to hint at how much of a shot you've got.

To the best of my knowledge, last year it was no section less than 42 (raw score). I keep tabs on these things round my neck of the woods. LOL.

But if you need anymore detailed information PM me. If there's anything relevant to the general HSFY population I'll post it here as well.
What is needed for a dent interview?

What happened here?

If this is true you may have just made my day, scratch that, my year.

Last year, interviews came out on the 4th of October

Sorry, but that's wrong.

Every section has an individual raw score.

I don't know about S1 and S3, but S2, last year I believe was 48/9 Raw.
2 years ago was 46 or 47.

Going by the threads in the Otago dent forum, I'd have to say I think Kai might be right on that one... 42 raw is like, 20th%ile, no? Can't see that getting an interview.
