It fluctuates year to year depending on those two sub-categories as well as the grad numbers, I'm under the impression that it's around about 150.Hi, does anyone know how much med places are available for undergrads who are not rural or mapas at otago?
thanks
Then how many are there usually available for MAPAS or rural entry? 20 of each, makes 190, which sounds familiar? Thanks
I don't know what the caps of those categories are, if there are indeed caps (the Maori subcategory is the subject of much rumours in this regard), but I assumed there's just 20-25 of each to get to the figure of 150 - we know for a fact that the current med2 class has 264 domestic students and 75% of them are health scis (source: med2 orientation lecture 2012), meaning there's just under 200.Then how many are there usually available for MAPAS or rural entry? 20 of each, makes 190, which sounds familiar? His previous post suggests that he's looking at health sci only.Across all three admission types there are 50 spots for Rural entry. The amount from each admission scheme varies from year to year.
That doesn't really matter. Otago has a lower entry requirement so has a lot more students who from the start have no chance of making med anyway. The ability of the competition is what matters rather than the number of competitors. Are the ratio of students doing biomed/health science to available med places roughly the same at otago and auckland? thanks.
As per gg, this is not a lottery of "x people from HSFY will be randomly selected into medicine", so it's not the quantity that matters, it's the quality. At the moment, roughly everyone who passed NCEA Level 3 can be guaranteed a place in HSFY, which I gather is much lower than Auckland's entry requirements. At the end of the day, as someone competing at a high level, it's not the "barely got UE" cohort that you're worried about (unless they're actually really clever kids and turned their lives around in HSFY like @frootloop ), but the "got Excellence endorsement and multiple scholarships and in this to win" cohort, which I gather makes up much of Auckland's biomed/BHSc cohorts thanks to the entry requirements. Are the ratio of students doing biomed/health science to available med places roughly the same at otago and auckland? thanks.
Heads up dudes and dudettes, I think they're putting the hubs results up now.
