Lol nah, heard you Aquinas people get really close because of the small numbers, which is a good thing!

Yeah i know what you mean about studying the concepts rather than doing questions. Do you know where I could get my hands on these papers from?

And yeah, I heard the Aquinas folk are very eccentric, but hey, like skyglow said, the college you stay at does not affect your position of getting into med/dent, it all depends on how focused / motivated you are.

To skyglow:

Thanks for the helpful advice about AS Physics, i will make sure i know how to do every single past paper question =] Just wondering, what were your marks for each paper, and what did you get for AS physics? (I'm sure it was in the 90's). Also, how did you study for physics during uni and also offline for CIE?

I'm also curious about the textbook list for 2009. Is it true that there is going to be a new physics book for 2009 written by the university? And do you know of any other book changes?

Go to exams.otago.ac.nz and search PHSI in papercode. You'll get phsi 110 (the old physics) and 191 (current physics).

Yeah, a lot of things people say about halls is bull.

AS Physics: 96

Can't remember what I did for offline. I think I just went through each objective separately and made sure I had covered all of them. For PHSI191 I made sure I understood everything in the lecture slides like how they did all their calculations, wrote up some really brief notes on the stuff I found difficult, prepared my cheat sheet with stuff like the lens diagrams and electron transitions, and did a past paper that was given out during a tutorial.

The new PHSI textbook looks promising. From what they had written, it looks like it caters really well to the paper.

I tried getting those papers but it won't let me log in. I think I need to get approved by the library or something. LOL @ the physics book = accurate as shoes thrown at bush, when will the text book list for '09 come out? Btw those marks are crazy dude, i don't see how they won't accept u into med with two 100's and two 98's. They would be utter fools not to.

I'm really hoping this new text book will be more helpful than the previous one.

For thsoe who wanted the lecture slides I included the relevant past papers in there. There's probably a couple I'm missing but it has most of them

https://books.unibooks.co.nz/lists.ihtml

That page has the 2008 HSFY list. Last year I found the booklist on this site first. It should be updated to 2009 pretty soon.

Mm but my UMAT is really crap compared to alot of the other health sci people so I dunno. Gonna find out anytime now :D

Thread split and continued here.

Don't buy your textbooks from the University Book shop. Vol1 is cheaper. Or better yet, get them second hand. I'm going to sell mine (I brought them brand new), they are in almost new condition (I made sure not to dog-ear them) and some mistakes (that were pointed out by lecturers) have been corrected.

I'm willing to buy them, there's just one problem. I don't know which books I need for next year! The book list for last year came out on 13th Feb which is simply too late, but i'm still keen to buy the books that ur 100% sure are gonna be used next yr =] What were ur UMAT results? How did u study for it?

Really? I got the booklist like a month or two early from that university bookshop website for this year. Well I wouldn't be overly worried about not having the book anyway.

Yay, I'll even chuck in the umat practice booklets for you at no cost. But first in first served ;)

98TH PERCENTILE?! U MONSTER! lol kidding, but sheesh...that's a mammoth score dude, how did u manage to pull that one off, honestly? Btw i know what ur talking about for section 3, the 'super-secret-omg-don't-mention-that-word-on-this-forum-or-you-die' course xD... lol @ jocular, what the hoof o.O'

There's alot of students who sneer at others who try to prepare for UMAT in various ways, saying things like "what are you doing, you can't study for the test" You can't study for UMAT, but you can certainly prepare for it. Studying is only one form of preparation.

Yeah I'm starting to get pretty nervous now. Gmail is open constantly lol. If it's not today then tomorrow is a big big chance.

Hello. Nothings happening on the other thread, so I thought I would just post here.

Koochkooch, I think you know me - think AS Bio, with the noob teacher. A word of advice on UMAT, preparation is good, but I wouldn't go crazy on the preparation for it. The best thing to do is to get as much practise in, in timed conditions. Because probably the thing that gets people most is that they run out of time. So you just have to get used to making good decisions, in short amounts of time. Thats the philosophy I used in my preparations, and it seemed to work pretty well. Reading the newspaper daily is a good thing to do, the faster the better, though make sure you don't miss information.

Don't go all out on study in the holidays either...enjoy your moment of freedom, there'll be plenty of time for study later. If you're anything like me, you wont remember anything you learn now, when its time to be tested.

I learnt speed-reading from reading Harry Potter, where I wanted to find out what happened as quick as possible, without cheating.

Best post in this thread so far lol. I read the newspaper everyday that was on the table at breakfast.

Thats all good, but Harry Potter has much more emotion, than just the newspaper, and thus is the more complete preparatory material. Perhaps that explains your section 2 score, skyglow.
